Engagement/Focus: Victor do you like to N/A
Greeting: Good morning class! I hope everyone is excited for a day full of learning. read books back home
Engagement: Have you ever wanted to make your own book? Do you want to know with your Family?
what all the elements you need in order to make one?
Link to previous: Yesterday we learned about how to read a book properly and today we
are going to learn about the different parts of a book.
Outcome: By the end of today you will be able to look at a book and be able to locate
the Title, Author, illustrator, etc.
Expected behavior: Everyone will sit down on the reading mat while I show everyone the
different key parts of a book. You may call out the answers if you know them.
Explanation/Procedures: Victor will have his own Edna what are some
1. Aright class, today we are going to look at the books If Not For The Cat, as well books to follow along so of the books you have
as the book Art for All. Can anyone remember how we read a book? That is that he can see first- been reading at
right! We read a book from the front cover to the back cover. Lets look at our hand what I am pointing home?
first book and see what we can learn. too due to his poor
2. How can I tell that this book is called If Not For The Cat Great job. This is eyesight. Secondly I Edna do you know
called the title of a book. The title of a book is usually the biggest print on the will give Victors group what illustrated
front of a book. We actually call the front of a book the cover. a paper that has all of means?
3. Do books come out of thin air or did someone have to create the book and the the elements that the
words in the book? Exactly, someone out there created this book and we call book needs sense he I will have these
them the author of the book. We can usually tell the author because it will cannot see the board questions printed out
say,By in front of the name. However sometimes is does not. Sometimes it does from far away. and presented to Edna

4. Who loves pictures in their books to help them read? Me too. When books are in front of her peers.
published there is actually someone who drew and created the pictures in the
book. If we want to know who that is then we must look for the name next to the
part that says Illustrated by: If Not For The Cat Day is says that is was
Illustrated by Ray Cruz. That means that he is the one who made the pictures we
see.
5. Lastly you may come across some bigger books throughout the school year.
These books sometimes have sections, or chapters to break the book up into
smaller pieces. Each chapter has its own title. This title usually gives us an idea
of what is going to happen within that section. Does anyone know what this is
called? It is actually called the table of contents. This takes all of the chapter titles
throughout the book and puts them in one place so that you can see what page
they are on. Lets look at the Art For All. Who wrote it? Thats right! George
MacDonald did. How were you able to tell that? (Because it had By: in front of
the name). Okay if we turn to the first page we see the title once again with the
author and the..? Yes, we see who illustrated it. Now if we turn the page once
again we will see the table of contents. Can everyone see what I was talking
about? If I wanted to know what page chapter 2 started on would I be able to tell
from looking here? Exactly!
6. Okay Now that we have gone over more elements of a book I want to remind
you of parts we learned from yesterday. The numbers at the top or usually the
bottom of a book are the page numbers. They are necessary. We read a book from
left to right and from the top of the page to the bottom.
7. We have a very exciting group activity planed today! Every group is going to get
their creative juices flowing and make their own book. It is going to need to
include all of the different elements we talked about today. One partner will be
the author and the other partner will be the illustrator. I will leave the books we
talked about as examples up at the front.
8. I will write on the board the elements we talked about so that they are reminded
of what they need to incorporate.
9. If anyone has any questions while working please raise your hand.
Closure: Thank you everyone for doing such and incredible job at working together
creating their own book. It is great to see the information you all learned today to create
something. Remember a book should have a title, author, and illustrator if there are
pictures, and a table of contents if there are chapters. The pages should be numbered and
it should read from left to right. Tomorrow we are going to present our books to the class
and describe all of the elements we have learned.
Extension/Elaboration: N/A N/A
Extension: If the student really seems to understand the elements
of a book I will provide a worksheet that they will need to answer
questions based on the information given.
Elaboration: If the student seems to be having a hard time
catching on to the different elements I will have a video for them
to watch over the parts of a book.
