b. Velocity is a physical vector quantity; both magnitude and

direction are needed to define it.
Velocity is defined as a measure of the distance an object
travels in a stated direction (displacement) in a given length of
time, and hence, the equation for velocity is:
Distance travelleda given direction(displacement )
Velocity=
Time taken

Q10 1. If V for velocity, d for displacement and t for time, then

show that V=d/t.

2. Find the units of velocity.

3. What is meant by displacement?

4. What is the difference between speed and velocity?

c. Acceleration is a physical vector quantity; both magnitude and

direction are needed to define it.
Acceleration is defined as the rate at which objects change
their velocity, and hence, the equation for acceleration is:
Changevelocity
Acceleration=
Time taken for change

Q11 1. If a for acceleration, u for initial velocity, v for final

velocity and t for time taken for change velocity, then show
that a=(v-u)/t.

2. Find the units of velocity.

3. What is meant by deceleration?

m/s) to 1000 m/s in 20 seconds.

Q14 By how much does the velocity of a cyclist change in 2 seconds

when accelerating at 5 m/s2?

Q15 What is the final velocity of a rocket after 30 seconds if it

accelerates at 50m/s2 from 100 m/s?

Q16 What is the initial velocity of a bus if after 4 seconds of

accelerating at 3m/s2 it reaches 18 m/s?

Q17 An object strikes the ground travelling at 20m/s. It is brought to

rest in 0.05seconds. What is its acceleration? Explain the
negative sign of your answer.

b. Distance-time graphs
a. Gradient of the distance (Y-axis) Vs time (X-axis) graph denotes
speed.
i. A straight line sloping upwards means it has
a steady speed.
ii. A horizontal line means the object is stopped.
iii. A steeper gradient means a higher speed.
iv. A curved line means the speed is changing.
v. A straight line sloping downwards means it has
a steady speed and a steady velocity in
the negative direction.

Q1 Using given details, sketch a distance-time graph to show the

motion of a car between two junctions (A to C).
