WATER SUPPLY AND SANITARY ENGINEERING

1. a) What are various purpose for which water in required in a community?


b) Distinguish flash mixer and flocculater.
c) Explain effect of excess fluoride in drinking water.
d) Explain Reverse Osmosis.
e) State two water borne diseases and pathogens which cause them. Also name
two harmful dissolved chemicals in water causing diseases with name.
f) What is Oxidation ditch?
g) What is a discrete particle?
h) Method of removal of oil and grease in waste water treatment.
i) What is significance non-silting and non-scouring velocity in waste water
conveyance?
j) Define BOD.

2. a) What are different sources of drinking water? What factors are to be taken
into account in selecting a source for a municipality?
b) The census records of a town show population as follows: (6)

Calculate the probable population in 2021, 2031 by any two methods.
3. a) Draw a Typical flow diagram from River Intake well to Clear Water
Reservoir of a Town Water Supply System and explain function of each unit in
brief.
b) A Water Supply Scheme is proposed for a town with design population of
75,000 @ 150 lpcd including domestic & non-domestic requirements. Water is
to be raised from an intake well & pumped to a cascade aerator. The level of
water in the intake well was 75.5m before pumping and the level of cascade
aerator is 115.750meters. The drawdown of water level in the intake well was
2.5m during pumping. The length and diameter of the rising main are 300
meters and 300 mm respectively. Combined efficiency of the pump and motor
is 75%. Assume f = 0.04. Calculate the BHP of the pump set.
4. a) Explain Soda-Lime Process of water softening.
b) A rectangular plain Sedimentation Tank with Length 15m, width 6m and depth
3m is to treat 2.4 ML/day. Calculate:
i) Detention Period.
ii) Average velocity of flow in the tank.
iii) Surface Loading Rate.
5. a) Explain its various features, principles of functioning of a Trickling Filter
with a neat sketch.
b) Explain Activated sludge process with typical flow diagram.
6. a) Explain oxidation pond with a neat diagram.
b) Explain various methods of treated waste water disposal on land.
7. a) Compare Slow Sand Filter with Rapid Gravity Filter.
b) Compare Aerobic and Anaerobic Decomposition of organic matters.
