RS232

The functions described in this chapter are used to transmit print data and their
registration numbers to the IJ printer from an external device connected to the printer
via a RS-232C serial communication line.
1. Transmission of print data
z An "item number" and "character string" are transmitted from the external
device to the IJ printer.
z The IJ printer receives the "item number" and "character string" and prepares
them for printing.
z The communication functions can also be used to transmit print items set up
for bar code or increased-width printing.
z When a character string is transmitted to a calendar print item, a
communication error will occur.
z When a number (alphabetical character) is transmitted via the communications
link to a count setting digit, the default value can be set.
2. Transmission of print data recall
z A print data "registration number" is transmitted from the external device to the
IJ printer.
z The IJ printer recalls the print data designated by the "registration number" and
prepares it for printing.
3. Transmission of print conditions
z The external device transmits "printing specifications", "print format", and
"overall column count setup" to the IJ printer.
z The IJ printer receives the "printing specifications", "print format", and "overall
column count setup" and prepares for printing using the transmitted conditions.
4. Transmission of user registration characters
z This function is used to transmit a user pattern (registration character) to the
IJ printer.
z A transmitted user pattern can be edited using the user pattern creation
function provided in the auxiliary function menu.
5. Comparison of "printings transmission", "print data recall transmission", "print
condition transmission", and "user registration character transmission.

2. When DC2 (retransmission) code is used

(When no response is received although ENQ has been issued and the contents of
print shall be changed)

IJ printer ACK NAK

5. When BCC code is included

External device ENQ STX Text ETX BCC

IJ printer ACK ACK

6. When the IJ printer is turned OFF

No response will be returned for any code transmission from the external device.

7. The printings, print specifications, print format, and user pattern data can be
successively transmitted in a single session in the following order:
1 Print format
2 Print specifications
3 Printings
A user pattern can be positioned anywhere within this data chain. The overall
column count setup data must be transmitted independently. If an attempt is made
to send it together with the other data, a communication error (NAK response)
will occur.
A print data recall must also be transmitted independently although no error will
occur when it is sent together with the other data. However, the print data recall
takes precedence, rendering the other data useless.

612 z 6.4 Transmission Sequences Section 6

8. Up to 1500 bytes of data can be transmitted at a time, including "STX" and "ETX".
If the 1500-byte limit is exceeded, a communication error (NAK response)
will occur.
9. Any data transmitted by external communication (print contents, print
specifications, print format, and user pattern) will not be stored except in the
following cases:
[Conditions for storing the data]
1 When the ink is stopped after communication by pressing the STOP key or
input of a stop signal.
2 When the display is changed from any other screen to the print description
screen using the touch panel.
3 At the first minute of every hour.

4. If you do not specify the item number, the setup data will be applied to all print
items.
NOTE: When transmitting print format and print specification data successively in
a single chain, ensure that the print format data precedes the print
specifications data.
A communication error will occur if this order is not maintained.

6.4.4-2 Text setup rules

Print format
1. Column count
z When you change the column count for a print item in a particular row, you
must also set the column count for all other print items of that row.
(Example)

1 3 5 7 1 3 5

Setting items 7 and 8 to

2 4 6 8 2 4 6 7 8
one column
Transmit the column count successively to items 7 and 8. If you transmit the
column count to only one item, a communication error will occur.
z When you change the column count for a print item, you must also set the
column count for all other print of that row.
(Example)

1 3 5 1 3 5 7

Setting items 7 and 8 to

2 4 6 7 8 2 4 6 8
two columns
Transmit the column count successively to items 7 and 8. If you transmit the
column count to only one item, a communication error will occur.
2. Inter-column space
z When you transmit one-column setup data for a particular print item, you also
have to transmit an inter-column space setting of "0" for the same chain as the
one-column setup data.
If you do not transmit an inter-column space setting of "0", a communication
error will occur.
z Ensure that the same inter-column space setting is selected for print items of
a row. In other words, when you transmit a new inter-column space setting for
a print item in a particular row, you must then transmit the same setting to all
other print items of that row.
3. Character size and inter-character space
z The available inter-character space depends on the character size.

Character size Inter-character space

5x5 0 to 3 dots
5 x 8 (5 x 7) 0 to 3 dots
9 x 8 (9 x 7) 0 to 7 dots
7 x 10 0 to 3 dots
12 x 16 0 to 4 dots
18 x 24 0 to 6 dots
24 x 32 0 to 8 dots

Section 6 6.4 Transmission Sequences z 619

z The total number of vertical dots cannot exceed the following limits:

Machine type Maximum number of vertical dots

Two-lines machine 20 dots
Four-lines machine 32 dots
z Some characters cannot be entered for every character size. If a print item
contains an invalid character after the character size has been changed, this
character will be replaced by a space.

Input character types available for various character sizes

5 x 5 5 x 8 9 x 8 7 x 10 12 x 16 18 x 24 24 x 32
Alphanumeric symbols { { { { { { {
Registered characters { { { { { { {
Single-byte characters { { { { { { {

z If an inter-character space other than "0" is transmitted for a print item with bar
code setup, a communication error will occur.
4. Bar code use and bar code type
z Two or more bar code types cannot be used simultaneously. When a specific
bar code is selected for a particular print item, the same bar code has to be
used for other print items with bar code setup.
z For a non-bar code print item, you cannot set a "bar code type" only without
sending the "bar code use" message.
z When the bar code setup is made for a print item, its inter-character space is
set to "0" regardless of the previous setting. (The inter-character space value
"0" does not have to be transmitted in this case.)
z For bar code type ITF, the following input rules must be observed. When any of
these rules is violated, the contents of the illegal print item will be changed to
a null character.
ITF input rules

No. Input rule Input example

The character entry must (Correct) [ 0123 ][ 456789 ]

5. Overall (global) column count setup
The same column count and print format apply to all print items.
The column count for the first row applies to all the other rows.
The inter-column space, character size, inter-character space, bar code use, and
increased-width settings for the first print item apply to all other print items.

Pattern data structure
The pattern data structure and data creation rules are explained below.
1. Rules:
z Every pattern data unit consists of 8 bits. For each bit, dot presence is
indicated by the value 1 (dot present) or 0 (no dot present).
z 8 vertical dots correspond to 8 bits (1 byte).
z For the character sizes of 5 x 5, 7 x 10, 5 x 7, and 9 x 7, some portions of
8-bit data are unavailable. Set such portions to "0".
(Even if you set them to "1", processing will be performed with their
settings changed to "0".)

6.4.6-2 Transmission control

ASCII Name Description

STX Code transmitted immediately before the text.
(02)H
(start)
ETX Code transmitted immediately after the text.
(03)H
(end)
The enquiry code is used by the external device to check if the
IJ printer is ready for signal reception. This code must be sent
ENQ before data is transmitted to the IJ printer. When the IJ printer is
(05)H
(enquiry) ready for reception, it will return the "ACK" code after ENQ has
been received. When the IJ printer is not ready for reception, the
"NAK" code is returned.
1 When the IJ printer is ready for reception, it returns this code
ACK in response to an "ENQ" code received from the external
(06)H (acknowled device.
gement) 2 This code also signals that text reception was completed
normally.
SO In the 1-byte transmission mode, this code is sent at the end of
(0E)H
(shift out) a 2-byte code for transmission control.
SI In the 1-byte transmission mode, this code is sent at the
(0F)H
(shift in) beginning of a 2-byte code for transmission control.
DLE This code is sent at the beginning of printings for each print item
(10)H (start of for transmission control.
item)
This code is transmitted if the printings have to be changed
before printing the contents transmitted to the IJ printer when
DC2
the overwrite-protected mode is activated. After receipt of this
(12)H (retransmiss
code, the IJ printer returns the ACK code and is ready for
ion)
reception.
When the IJ printer is off-line, "NAK" is sent.
DC3 Similar to DC2.
(13)H (retransmiss However, DC3 forces the IJ printer to terminate the current
ion) printing operation.
1 The IJ printer sends this code when it is not ready to receive
NAK upon reception of the "ENQ" code from the external device.
(negative 2 This code signals that text reception was not completed
(15)H
acknowledg normally (for instance, when there is a transmission error in
ement) the received data or a print data number not registered is
received).
ESC This code is sent at the beginning of the header for transmission
(1B) (start of control. The header is used to identify the transmission data type
header) and sent after STX.

z The NAK code is returned in response to reception of ENQ from an external
device.
2. When the IJ printer is on-line
1 When transmitting print data only
z Transmission data is received from the external device. When there was
no error in the received data, the ACK code is returned and the "not ready
for reception" state continues.
z To change from "not ready for reception" to "ready for reception", perform
one of the following procedures.
1. Perform a printing operation once.
2. Transmit the DC2 (retransmission) code to the IJ printer.
3. Press the [On-line/off-line] key to enter the off-line mode and then
switch back to on-line mode.
z If there is an error in the data transmitted from the external device, the NAK
code is returned after receipt of ETX. As the "ready for reception" state is
maintained in this case, retransmit the data starting with ENQ.
2 When transmitting print conditions, user registration characters, and print data
recall
z When there is no error in the data received from the external device, the
ACK code is returned. In this case, the "ready for reception" state is
maintained.
3 When transmitting print data, print conditions, user registration characters, and
print data recall
z When transmitting print data, print conditions, user registration characters,
and print data recall, ensure that the print conditions, user registration
characters, and print data recall are transmitted prior to the print data. If the
print data is transmitted earlier than the other data, the "not ready for
reception" state continues. Subsequent transmission of the print
conditions, user registration characters, and print data recall will then
cause a communication error.

Section 6 6.5 Communication Timing z 631

3. When the "not ready for reception" state prevails after reception of
transmission data from the external device
z The NAK code is returned in response to reception of ENQ from the
external device.
4. Transmission data received from the external device
z Error-free transmission data is stored in the IJ printer. The same contents
is printed until other transmission data is sent to the IJ printer.
z If there is an error in the data transmitted from the external device, the print
data within the IJ printer remains unchanged. In that case, retransmit the
data starting with ENQ as explained in (b). The retransmission count must
be determined by the external device.
5. When a data transmission is aborted (transmission including the ETX code is
not completed)
z The print data within the IJ printer remains unchanged. For data
retransmission, perform either of the following procedures.
1 Transmit the DC2 (retransmission) code to the IJ printer.
2 Press the [On-line/off-line] key to enter the off-line mode and then switch back
to on-line.

z The IJ printer executes an internal process to prepare for printing in accordance

with the received print data. Do not send a print start signal during internal process
execution.
z In the overwrite-protected mode, initiate the next communication after completion
of printing.
z In the overwrite-enabled mode, the next communication can be transmitted during
a printing operation, but ACK/NAK is only returned after the ongoing printing
operation is completed. (method 2)
z When a print start signal shorter than T2 is sent, the "Print data changeover in
progress M" error will occur.
* 3 If the communication time interval is not sufficiently secured, normal operation may
not be possible.

6.8 Precautions
6.8.1 Notes on Use of the Speed Follow-up Feature
3. If the speed follow-up signal cannot be input during the printing operation, the
printing state is maintained and communication cannot be established (no
response can be made). In that case, perform step 1 or 2 below.
3 Enter the standby state and then initiate the communication.
4 Issue the print abort code "DC3". After the IJ printer has returned an "ACK"
response, perform the normal procedure to initiate the communication.
4. Number of pulses necessary for a rotary encoder from print signal detection until
the start of printing.
Number of pulses necessary = Number of printing preparation pulses

6.8.2 Notes on Transmission of Print Conditions

1. The default number of digits for the character height data is 2. The older IJ printer
models GX and HX use 3 digits for transmission of print conditions by default
(optional function). If the new model of the IJ printer replaces any of these older
models, open the following screen from the communication environment setup
screen and change the number of digits for character height data to 3.
