TRACKING JOB LEADS

WHAT IS A JOB LEAD?

Job lead is information about job openings, either in the form of ads, postings, and
information from your network, or even rumors or news items.

HOW DO WE TRACK JOB LEADS?

1. START WITH YOUR NETWORK

The majority of jobs acquired by job seekers are found via contacts and personal
networking.
When searching for job leads, reach out to your network in an organized and
appropriate manner.
Be professional
Make a contact with a phone call, e-mail, letter or by meeting in person
Keep good records on who you have contacted and in the information each
contact provided.

2. ORGANIZE BY MAKING SPREADSHEETS

Its very uncommon to submit applications for many positions. Its important not to miss
any application deadlines and follow ups, and this can only be solved by organizing.

The key columns to include:

1. Company Name

The name of the organization youre applying to.

2. Contact

Your point of contact at the company; probably who you addressed your cover
letter to

3. E-mail

The email of your point of contact

4. Date Applied

When you submitted your application

5. Application Summary

What you submitted: a cover letter, resume, and any additional materials, like
a portfolio or reference list.

6. Interview

When your interview is scheduled

7. Follow-Up

Indicates here any response you made for example a Thank You e-mail.

8. Status

If you were rejected, offered the job, asked in for a second interview, etc.

3. SOCIAL NETWORK

The newest method of reaching out to your personal network is by posting on

social networking sites to see if your friends know any job openings in your
field of interest.

4. PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS

Many fields have professional organizations you can join in order to access
job postings and employment information specific to that field or industry.

Companies may pay these professional organizations to post jobs on their site or list.

5. CONFERENCES, WORKSHOPS, AND MEETINGS

These types of gatherings are great places to network, find job leads, and
learn more about the current state of the field youre interested in.

during your interview and then choose an outfit that will create a positive perception and
is appropriate.

MALES

The standard is still a classic business suit, a neutral color shirt and a

Interview mistakes for men include wearing comedy ties, badly ironed shirts
and not shaving.

White shirts are always a good option. White sends the message of precision

dress code policy of the company) with matching ties and slacks that
comfortably fits you.

appropriate to the position for which they are applying.

It is okay to bring a professional bag or small purse, but not both.
Avoid heavy make-up and perfume.
Hair should be fixed neatly.

tattoos.
Lighter-colored professional button-down shirt or blouse should be worn under
your suit jacket.
Knee-length skirts or pant suits are both appropriate.
Do not wear skirts with high slits.
Show should have 1-2inch heel or be flat. If possible, shoes should match the
color of your suit, have a closed toe and be polished.
Do not wear bright colors, animal prints, or anything flashy and low-cut.

ANSWERING INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

STRATEGIES FOR ANSWERING INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

1. Research the Job and the Company

Take time to research about the company and the position you are
interviewing for in advance. The more you know, the better equipped youll
be to respond to interview questions.

2. Practice Makes Perfect

The more practice you have at interviewing, the more comfortable youll
be during job interview.
Practice with a friend or a family member the common interview questions
to get an idea how to respond.

3. Know the Facts

Know heartily your work history. But just to be sure, bring an extra copy of
your resume to refer to if youre nervous and need a reminder.

4. Try to Stay Calm

Give yourself plenty of time to get to interview, take a deep breath before
you go into interview, and do your best while staying calm.

5. Take Your Time

Dont rush to get out a response to an interview question. Briefly, think

about your response before you answer.

6. Use the Right Words

The words you use during job interviews will convey an impression of you
to the hiring manager. Using power words in your responses, will help
make that impression a good one.

7. Give Examples

When you respond to interview questions give examples of how you

handled related situations. The more specific you are, the more the hiring
manager will see that you have the skills to do the job.

8. Share Your Accomplishments

Dont be shy about what you have accomplished in your career. Share
examples of your accomplishments that are related to the job you are
interviewing for to reinforce the fact that youre capable and qualified.

9. Ask for Clarifications

Its fine to ask clarification if youre not sure what is being asked.

10. Be Direct
When youre asked about why you left or leaving your job try to keep it
positive. Be direct and focus your interview answer on the future.

RESIGNING FROM A NURSING POSITION

1. First things first

Check your personnel or employee handbook to see how much notice you need
to give. This varies with each employer and depends on your length of service
and position. If necessary, check with human resources.

Notify your immediate supervisor as soon as you make the decision to resign. Its
best to do so in person. Telephone notice will suffice only if a face-to face
meeting is not possible.
If neither is possible, notify the next highest in command or skip to the written
notification phase below. This is the courteous and respectful way to get the
process started.
Don t embarrass your supervisor (or yourself) by allowing him or her to hear
about your resignation from someone else.

2. Put it in writing

Follow your verbal notice with a formal letter of resignation.

Address the letter to your immediate supervisor.
Send a copy to your department director, if applicable, and the human resources
office.
Date the letter the same day as your verbal resignation.
Word-process the letter on good stationery with aproper heading thatincludes
your name and address.
Use an opening sentence that states your intent and last date of service to this
employer, such as I am resigning my position as staff nurse fromthe ED effective
December 20, 2017. Then state your reason for resigning in a general way, such
as I have accepted a position that will better support my career goals or I have
decided to pursue other opportunities outside the hospital. This is not the time or
the place to criticize, complain or seek revenge. Remember, your letter of
resignation will become part of your permanent employment record.
It s always a good idea to add some friendly comments, such as Thank you for
the opportunities afforded me here.

3. Don t burn your bridges

Youll need references or a recommendation from your employer or supervisor.
And you never know when you ll encounter someone
from that facility when you apply for work at another one later on.

Resist the temptation to walk out without notice or without sufficient notice.. Not
only does it serve as a hurdle to overcome in future prospective employment
situations, but it leaves a bad final impression of you

. It also is advisable to resist telling off your boss or making other disparaging
comments. Bury any animosity you may have, no matter how justified. Wipe the
slate clean, and get a fresh start in your new job. Youll feel better about yourself
in the long run.

Follow proper resignation etiquette and leave on good terms. That way, you can
move forward with a clean conscience and clean employment record.

Learning to resign with style will facilitate a smooth transition and a bright future.
