Lesson Plan Format 1

Goal: To have students discover how the congruence of triangles can be used in real life.

Objectives: To apply the use of congruence to everyday life.

Content: High School mathematics- Geometry

Intended Audience: 10th and 11th grade Geometry students

Prerequisite Knowledge:

1. Congruence between triangles

2. How to prove congruence

3. How to write congruence statements

Learning Standards:

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.2

- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.3

Materials:

1. Laptops

2. SmartBoard

3. Whatever materials students need to create project.

Procedures:

1. Introduction:

a. Have students come in to class and grab a laptop. Start the lesson with

the question Why are congruent triangles important? this will

cause students to think critically and apply the information they have

learned throughout the unit.

2. Think Aloud:
a. Working with groups to form an applicable situation.
Lesson Plan Format 2

3. Instruction for the Activity /Questioning/Discussion:

a. Pose the question to the students during the warm up.

b. Let students try and answer the question to the best of their ability.

c. Give no instructions, unless asked specific questions.

d. Goal is have students look in to how some professions use triangles

and their congruence in the real world and how important it is to

prove the congruence.

Discussion Question Anticipated Student Answers

are presented).

What did you all learn? Various answers

Why do you think that I had you do this To learn how triangle congruence and

project? similarity is applicable to the real world.

Using the information you all have learned Various answers

are there any other math content we have

talked about that you think could be applied

to the real world?

4. Assignments:

a. Research during class

b. Make a presentation (can be any type i.e. a poster board, PowerPoint,

etc.) to present to the class.

5. Adaptations:

IEPs and struggling students

- Student specific based on IEP specifications.

- Have guided notes available at student request.

- Read notes aloud for students struggling with reading.

- Have SmartBoard materials available for students to reference.

- Give extra time for homework when needed.

Types of Learners Supported:

(A few that frequently go together for a comprehension lesson are listed below)

Visual Spatial: Using the computers to research, can use pictures.

Auditory: Listening to group partners and the teacher (when necessary) to

understand the directions. May also use audio reading during research.

Interpersonal: Working with groups for this assignment.

Assessments:

Presentation of the students projects.

Will showcase knowledge of congruence and what they

Rationale:

This will help improve students ability to research topics. This will also help students

understand the why portion of learning triangle congruence and that even though they

might not go in to this profession its still important to know. Lastly, it gives the students a

chance to better their public speaking skills. This will also help students review topics for

the test over the unit. It will also give students the ability to be creative in mathematics and

to see the subject from a different point of view than just solving problems.
