White nationalist posters appear on campus
By: Camille Cade, March 17, 2017

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - This week, University of Maryland Police Department responded to
reports of white nationalist posters that were posted at various locations around campus. The
first report of these posters came in September of last year.

The posters were found posted at Marie Mount Hall, Tydings Hall, LeFrak Hall and the Lee
Building. According to the Diamondback, there has been a total of 107 flyers seen from
September until this week.

Statements from the posters include, America is a white nation and Carry the torch of your
people. The link listed on the posters leads to a website for an organization called Vanguard
America.

According to this website, Vanguard America believes that, America is to be a nation

exclusively for the White American peoples... On a campus that consists of 43 percent minority
students, these poster sightings caused concern across campus.

The University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) are currently searching to identify the
individuals who are responsible for these fliers. Rosanne Hoaas, a spokeswoman for the UMPD,
said that the department is very concerned about this hate bias incident. According to Hoaas,
Chief David Mitchell has expressed great concern as well.

On Tuesday, President Loh was quoted saying that the posters, contain detestable language that
is an affront to who we are. Students seem to agree with that sentiment however, they are not
surprised that these posters have appeared on campus.

That statement is a reality today, said sophomore Andrew Tawiah when asked to react to the
poster pictured below. Before there was fear about illegals, there was fear about free blacks. It
does not surprise me to see a sign like that on this campus.

Junior Kristian Johnson said, it doesnt surprise me to see
that on campus because I feel like some white people really
feel that way but I didnt think they would post something
like that. It shows no consideration for their peers. She went
on to say, it makes me uncomfortable because you never
know who is thinking that way when you walk around
campus.

Vanguard America made a statement to the Diamondback

stating that they posted these fliers around campus because
campuses are typically controlled by their Jewish enemies.

People have gotten bold since the election, according to

sophomore Kumam Khasar. She believes that is why these
posters have been appearing in the recent months.

Khasar then explained her stance on reporting undocumented immigrants. We do not know the
stories of the undocumented people that are in America and I do not think it is anyones place to
report them.

Aside from thinking that the poster suggested actions and ideals that are unjust, some students
felt personally attacked by them.

When showed the images of the posters, students for example Saul Castillo had emotional
reactions. Sadness is what junior Saul Castillo said overcame him when he saw the posters.

Castillo is a member of Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., which is a Latino fraternity on
campus. He said, it is sad to know that people on this campus really think like that and it is sad
that I am not surprised.

Students and staff alike were saddened to see these white nationalist posters around the campus
this past week. The UMPD is reviewing camera footage in order to identify the people
responsible for this crime of hate bias.
