Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Emily Massey Date:4/30/17

Grade and Topic:1st grade mathematics Length of Lesson: 1 hr

Mentor Teacher: J. Townes School:University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Students will be able to add and subtract numbers within 20 and solve word problems.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to add numbers within 20 and be able to solve problems.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking
from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

MATERIALS:
White board with markers
Computers for interactive games and creation of a comic.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Adding and counting are the key concepts.
Adding, numbers, equals are the terms needed to know.
Previous lessons include counting and that is essential when trying to add things together because you count all
the objects.
When I start to introduce subtraction I can show how the two are related using manipulative.
Differentiated activities are needed for the more advanced students and the ones who have not mastered this
topic or the one before it.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: Call the students to pay attention to you. Ask the students of they know what adding is and if
they know how.
Procedures: Provide a sequential (step by step) description of the procedures and activities for the lesson.
Write simple addition equations on the board and show students adding can be
done by using manipulates. (10 min)
Set up stations where students will rotate between the two stations: 1) a
interactive learning game on adding and allow them to play and 2)Get students to create a comic
using toondoo on addition (45 mins)
Closure: Ask students if they understand adding and respond to any questions. Reassure them that adding can
be fun and easy.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Students will take a quiz and pass with a 70% or more.

MODIFICATIONS:
For students who did not master this topic, offer addition 1 on 1 help instead on creating the comic
For the students who are advanced in this area, start introducing subtraction and have them play subtraction
games.
