Multiplication Word Problems

Standard: Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having

wholenumber answers using the four operations, including problems in which

remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter

standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental

computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

Benchmark: Mathematics DOK Level 2 (Skill/Concept). Includes the engagement of

some mental processing beyond a habitual response. A Level 2 assessment item

requires students to make some decisions as to how to approach the problem or

activity.

Goal Statement: Student should be able to understand multiplication word problems

and put it into an equation.

Content Base: Students will use their math workbooks to practice and other

worksheets based on this lesson.

Pre-requisite knowledge: Students will use their previous knowledge of multiplication

to solve the problems.

Eliciting the desired behaviors: I will ask the students to solve word problems and tell

me how it is the same and different to regular problems.

Instructional Strategies:

a. Students will be given some examples by me and they will be done as a class.

Then they will be expected to work alone or with a partner on the worksheet that I

have provided to do the word problems. The students will be told to do the best

they can.
b. The worksheet will contain easy, middle, and hard problems for the different level

of students in the classroom.

c. The students will be able to work alone or with a partner and will also be able to

listen to music if they so choose to.

Providing Feedback: I will teach this lesson by showing students how to dissect

multiplication word problems and giving them examples on the smartboard. There will

also be a video for them to watch where the examples are given to the orally as a class.

Assessment: After a couple days the students will have a test over multiplication and

multiplication word problems.
