Introduction
Weddings have always been a quintessential part of the Sims experience. The nature of Sim weddings has gradually evolved as new
Expansion and Stuff Packs have been released, with new clothing options, wedding-themed objects, wedding venues and
honeymoon destinations becoming available to enhance your Sims' nuptials. There's a lot to think about when planning your Sims'
Big Day, so here is a guide to the options available and some tips to help you give your Sims the wedding of their dreams.

Notes

1. In The Sims 2, a wedding involving a male Sim and a female Sim is termed "marriage", whereas if b oth Sims are of the same
gender this is termed "joining". For simplicity, I will use "marriage" in this article to mean a wedding involving Sims of the same or
opposite genders and "b ride and groom" to refer to the couple b eing married / joined.

2. I am not going to deal with cheats or hacks in this article.

3. This article is b ased on British and American wedding customs, as these are the ones with which I am most familiar.

4. Suggested further reading: the Prima official Sims 2 guide b ooks b y Greg Kramer, which I found indispensib le whilst preparing this
article.

The Basic Format

The basic Sims 2 wedding comes in three tiers of formality:

1. The Simple Ceremony

The simplest wedding possible involves only the bridal couple and is brought about by selecting one Sim from the engaged couple,
clicking on his / her fianc and selecting Propose -> Marriage / Joining. If the second Sim has a a good enough daily and lifetime
relationship with the first Sim and is in a sufficiently good mood, they get married immediately, exactly where they stand and in
whatever they happen to be wearing at the time. Otherwise, the proposal is rejected, daily and lifetime relationship scores plummet
and the proposing Sim receives a negative memory. The brief ceremony involves only the engaged couple, who simply say their vows
to each other and exchange rings.

Any other Sims on the lot ignore the proceedings altogether. Afterwards, both Sims wear wedding rings and the couple's surname
becomes that of the proposing Sim.

2. The White Wedding

For a slightly fancier affair, you need a wedding arch (found in Buy Mode
under Miscellaneous -> Party). Select either member of the engaged
couple, click on the arch and select Get Married / Joined. The same
relationship and mood criteria apply as for the simple wedding in step 1
above. If these criteria are met, both Sims walk to the wedding arch
where they spin on the spot and change into the standard wedding outfits
shown on the left (N.B. this changed from Open For Business onwards -
see below).

Any other Sims present on the lot also head for the wedding arch, where
they spin and change into formal wear. If there are chairs placed near the
wedding arch, they take their seats to witness the ceremony (in the
absence of chairs, guests will gather round the arch). A special cinematic
sequence ensues, showing either the wedding ceremony or the tragic
rejection (if the relationship and mood criteria are not met). As with the
simple ceremony, no celebrant is involved and the couple simply stand
beneath the wedding arch, say their vows to each other and exchange
rings.

After the ceremony, the wedding guests stand to applaud the newlyweds
and, if there is a bottle of champagne nearby, they will
autonomously toast the Happy Couple, who then share a kiss.

3. The Wedding Party

An extra dimension can be added by throwing a Wedding Party. Click

on the telephone and select Throw Party -> Wedding Party and select
your guests. As with any party, not all of those invited will necessarily
accept the invitation. The guests who do turn up arrive wearing their
formal outfits. For party scoring purposes, it's important that either a
simple or wedding arch ceremony takes place before the party ends. At
the end of the Wedding Party, a limousine arrives to transport the
newlyweds off-lot for a brief honeymoon (N.B. this changed with Bon
Voyage - see below).

The Evolution of the Sims 2 Wedding

Since the release of the original Sims 2 game in 2004, an additional eight Expansion Packs and nine Stuff Packs have followed. Many
of these packs have either altered how weddings work or have included wedding-related content.

University

Young adults Sims, introduced in this pack, can become engaged but cannot get married or joined until they become adults.

Nightlife

Prior to Nightlife, the only way to invite a disparate set of Sims over to your Sim's place was to throw a party. Nightlife introduced
the Groups system, whereby it became possible to create groups of Sims who could then be invited to social gatherings, including
trips to community lots. This is very useful if your Sims are planning a non-home lot wedding (Bon Voyage onwards) and are therefore
unable to throw a Wedding Party.

The Downtown neighbourhood is the perfect location for your Sims' stag and hen parties. Nightlife also brought us the DJ NPC, who
appears automatically when a DJ booth is placed on a community lot - on home lots the DJ booth must be manned by other Sims.

Nightlife also introduced the slow dance, which allows the newlyweds to enjoy a romantic First Dance together at their wedding
reception.

Happy Holiday Stuff

This pack included many items designed for use at celebrations and therefore very useful for weddings e.g. fireworks, party poppers,
rattles and horns, fairy lights, candles, decorative piles of gifts.

Open For Business

Previously, Sims changed into standard wedding outfits after initiating a wedding via the wedding arch. Open For Business introduced
new flexibility by having Sims change into their currently selected formal wear choices at the wedding arch, thereby allowing you to
choose your Sims' wedding outfits in advance.

Glamour Life Stuff

This pack didn't change any of the functionality of weddings, but did include some glamorous wedding gowns and tuxedos (see next
screenshot).

Seasons

Clearly, it is important to consider during which season your Sims' wedding will take place for various reasons e.g. phase of plants
and trees, weather, etc. Would your Sims prefer a sun-drenched beach wedding...

...or a festive winter wedding?

In addition, this pack introduced the ability to select a different hairstyle for each category of clothing via any mirror. So, you might select
pigtails to go with your Sim bride's everyday clothing but a fancy updo to go with formal wear. Your Sim bride's hair will change to the
chosen hairstyle automatically when she changes into formal wear at the wedding arch. This neatly avoids having the bride-to-
be wandering around sporting an elaborate hairstyle with jeans beforehand (unless she wants to, of course!).

The introduction of gift giving with this pack is also a useful feature for weddings.

Celebration! Stuff

This pack includes many useful items

designed specifically for use at weddings,
including themed walls and floors, themed
furniture, buffet tables, bars, banners,
romantic floral displays and candles,
balloons, new wedding arches and wedding
cakes, formal hairstyles with veils, tiaras and
flowers, a range of bridal gowns in different
styles, and male formal wear and
bridesmaids' dresses for children and adults.

Also included is a ready made residential

lot, the romantically named Ab ode de l'amour
(32,619), shown on the right, which has
been designed specifically to play host
to weddings. This can be found in the lots
and houses bin.

Bon Voyage

Up until the release of Bon Voyage, weddings were only able to take place on home lots. Finally, with the release of this pack, Sims
were given the opportunity to hold their weddings on community lots. Now the possibilities are endless. Weddings can take place in
hotels (both in the Sims' home neighbourhood and on Vacation lots), in churches, on the beach, in the park, essentially anywhere...
Real honeymoons were also introduced with this pack. The engaged couple may choose to book a honeymoon via telephone or
computer in much the same way as they would book a standard vacation - the main difference being that no other guests are allowed!
Shortly after the wedding ceremony, the airport shuttle rolls up at the wedding venue and whisks the Happy Couple off to the
airport (unless the wedding took place in a vacation destination).

Another useful new feature added with Bon Voyage was photography. This is not actually an entirely new feature, as University
included a camera career reward object, but with Bon Voyage photography was made available to everyone. All Sims now carry a
camera at all times in order to capture the important moments in their lives. They can take photos themselves or ask others to
take photos for them. It is also possible to put individual Sims in a range of poses for the camera using the Pose self-interaction.
Photographs are saved to the Storytelling folder. Sims can use their computers to order a photograph album of their favourite shots or
framed prints to decorate their homes.

The group dances that came with Bon Voyage i.e. hula and slap dance, are very popular at Sim weddings and great for getting the
guests onto the dancefloor.

Custom Content

In addition to the Maxis items listed above, there is of course a vast amount of wedding-related custom content available on the
internet. One of my favourites sites, which I think deserves a mention in this context, is Pronupsims, a web site dedicated entirely to
Sim weddings.

Planning Your Sim Wedding

There is a lot to think about when planning your Sims' Big Day, so here are some tips to help make it a day to remember:

1. Engagement

Only two Sims who are engaged are able to have a wedding, so make sure this has taken place in advance. This is achieved by
building up the relationship scores between your two chosen Sims and having them perform romantic socials until the Propose ->
Engagement option appears. Clicking on this triggers a cinematic sequence depicting either the happy acceptance or tragic rejection.
Make sure the Sim who is being proposed to is in a good mood to maximise the chances of a successful outcome.
2. Friendships

Have the bride and groom work on their relationships with other Sims in order to maximise guests for shopping trips, stag and hen
parties and the wedding itself.

Staging a wedding is easier the more controllable Sims you have to work with, so it's a good idea to have your engaged Sims share a
home with as many other Sims as possible - only up until the Happy Couple get back from their Honeymoon, of course. Then you can
turf out all the hangers-on or move the newlyweds into a home of their own.

3. Shopping Trips

Send a member of each household invited to the wedding on a shopping trip to a clothing store to select formal outfits for each
member of their household to wear at the wedding. The bride might like to invite a group of girlfriends to join her when she goes to buy
her bridal gown.

4. Venue Selection

Unless you have Bon Voyage or a subsequent expansion pack installed, your Sims have no option but to hold their wedding on one or
the other's home lot. As the two Sims live together after the wedding on whichever lot was used for the ceremony, and as no more than
eight Sims are allowed to live on any lot, if a lot already has eight Sims living on it, it is not possible to hold a wedding there unless
someone moves out first. Also, if the Sim who would be moving in after the ceremony is pregnant, that counts as two extra Sims and a
wedding will only be able to take place if the lot has no more than six Sims living there already.

From Bon Voyage onwards, your

Sims may get married on almost
any lot they choose:

The home lot of the bride or groom

A community lot e.g. hotel, park, church, village hall
A vacation lot e.g. hotel, park, beach, Far East temple, by a mountain lake
The only place it is not possible to hold a wedding is on a residential lot which is not the home lot of either of the engaged Sims i.e. a
residential lot where both members of the engaged couple are non-controllable visitors. This is because one member of the
couple must be controllable in order to initiate the ceremony.

5. Venue Preparation

Open up the lot where the wedding is to take place and prepare an area for the ceremony and another for the reception. Many relevant
items can be found in Buy Mode under Miscellaneous -> Party and in the Weddings, Parties and Celebration! Stuff collection folders
(circled in red below):
In the ceremony area you may wish to include:

a wedding arch
table with open book (for signing the register)
podium
red carpet / path of rose petals (The Camino Real from Celebration! Stuff, 300, found under Decorative -> Rugs)
guest seating
banners
floral displays
candles / candelabra
piano, other musical instruments or stereo / speakers
In the reception area you may wish to include:

a wedding cake (must be placed on a surface)

Titania Vineyards 1914 Toasting Set (must be placed on a surface)
buffet table (remember to click on it and select Serve Food)
top table and chairs for the Happy Couple
dining tables and chairs for the guests
candles or flowers on the dining tables
stage area with musical instruments
stereo or speakers
DJ booth (from Nightlife, found under Electronics -> Audio)
dancefloor
bar
banners
floral decorations
balloons
gift table
piles of wrapped gifts (e.g. Mystery Presents from Happy Holiday Stuff, 275, found under Decorative -> Sculptures)
fireworks (from Happy Holiday Stuff, found under Miscellaneous -> Party)
box of party poppers / rattles / horns (from Happy Holiday Stuff)
6. Season Selection

Ob viously, this section is only applicab le if you have the Seasons EP installed.

Different seasons have different weather conditions, which is well worth taking into consideration, especially if your Sims are planning
an outdoor ceremony. In neighbourhood view for the neighbourhood in which the wedding will be taking place, click on the Season
Chooser button (top left of screen, as shown below) and select your chosen season for the current quadrant - and for the following
quadrant if the season is about to change.
Here are some aspects of each season to consider when planning a Sim wedding:

Season Benefits Weather

Spring Increased relationship effects for romantic socials Comfortable to hot temperatures

Romantic social interactions more likely to be accepted 30% chance of rain

Romantic socials more likely to occur autonomously

Hygiene need decay slowed when outdoors

Trees in leaf or bud

Flowers in bloom

Summer Increased relationship effects for friendly socials Comfortable to very hot temperatures

Friendly social interactions more likely to be accepted 10% chance of rain

Energy need decay slowed when outdoors 10% chance of hail

Trees in leaf or bearing fruit

Flowers in bloom

Autumn Social need decay slowed when outdoors Comfortable to cold temperatures

Trees in Autumn colours, dropping leaves 15% chance of rain

Flowers in bloom

Winter Increased relationship effects for family social interactions Comfortable to very cold temperatures

Family social interactions more likely to be accepted 50% chance of snow

Hunger need decay slowed when outdoors

Gifts more likely to be accepted

Increased relationship effects from gift giving

Low chance of bugs

7. Assign Roles

It is a good idea to make sure your Sim couple have high relationship scores with a number of other Sims. That way they will have a
wide selection of other Sims to invite to their wedding. Don't forget to make sure that all these Sims have telephones in their homes so
that they are able to be invited! The higher your Sims' relationship scores are with other Sims, the more likely these Sims are to turn up
for the wedding, so have your chosen couple work on these relationships in advance. There are plenty of roles to fill, so the more Sims
in attendance the better. Sims invited to the wedding may serve as:

wedding guests
maid of honour / bridesmaids
best man / groomsmen
flower girls
pageboys
ring bearer
celebrant
pianist / band / DJ
wedding photographer

Go to the home lots of the Sims who will be invited to the wedding and, bearing in mind the intended role of each Sim at the wedding,
use dressers and mirrors to select appropriate formal outfits, hairstyles and accessories for each one in advance. Remember, these
Sims will be wearing their current formal wear selection at the wedding if you throw a Wedding Party or use a wedding
arch. Otherwise, guests will wear their everyday clothing at the ceremony.

For bridesmaids/groomsmen, select identical or co-ordinating outfits for some of the guests.

For flower girls or pages, select suitable outfits for some children and/or toddlers - bear in mind that toddlers cannot travel to vacation
destinations, so your Sims won't be able to have infant flower girls or ring bearers at their beach wedding.

Don't forget to select appropriate everyday outfits for the Sims who will be attending the stag and hen parties.

8. Book A Honeymoon

If you don't have Bon Voyage installed, there will only be a honeymoon if you throw a Wedding Party. The honeymoon will begin
automatically with the arrival of a limousine at the end of the party and simply involves the couple leaving the lot for a few hours and
returning with a large mood boost. There is no need to make any preparations.

If you do have Bon Voyage installed, your engaged Sim couple may wish to book a full blown vacation lot honeymoon in advance of the
wedding via any telephone or
computer. This option only appears
after the engagement has taken
place. A Bon Voyage honeymoon
begins shortly after the wedding with
the arrival of the airport shuttle. If no
honeymoon is arranged in advance,
no honeymoon of any kind will occur -
not even the pre-Bon Voyage off-lot
version. You may prefer to book a
standard vacation instead - the only
difference being that there will be a
longer gap between the end of the
wedding and the arrival of the airport
shuttle.

9. Wardrobe Selection

In the same way as you did for the

guests, select formal wear for the
bridal couple that you wish them to
wear at their wedding. If you are not
planning to throw a Wedding Party or
use a wedding arch, you can choose
clothing from any category and send
the Sims to a dresser to change just
before the ceremony.

For the bride, consider:

bridal gown
hairstyle
make-up
manicure
accessories e.g. tiara, hair flowers, veil, jewellery, hat, fur stole, scarf, gloves
bouquet / single bloom
wedding purse

From Seasons onwards, a different

hairstyle can be set for each category of
clothing (shown on the right), so you can
select the bride's wedding hairstyle in
advance and it will change to this style
automatically when she changes into
formal wear.

Unfortunately, accessories (found under

the glasses icon) cannot be set for each
category of clothing and are worn with all
outfits, so if, for example, you select a veil
from accessories, the bride will wear
it from then on until you remove it, with all
categories of clothing.

Don't forget to select everyday clothing that

will serve as going away outfits for your
bride and groom as they will change into
everyday clothing when the airport shuttle
arrives (Bon Voyage only). If you don't have
Bon Voyage installed and throw a
Wedding Party, the couple will depart for
their honeymoon in whatever they happen
to be wearing when the limo pulls up. If having stag and hen parties, select appropriate everyday outfits for these, but don't forget to
change these to your chosen going away outfits afterwards.

Also select underwear, pyjamas, swimwear and outerwear that you wish your newlyweds to wear on their honeymoon.

10. Stag and Hen Parties

Send the groom-to-be Downtown on a group outing with some male friends to celebrate his stag night / bachelor party and send the
bride-to-be on a group outing with some girlfriends for her hen night / bachelorette party - one of the few occasions when you may
wish to have her wear a veil with everyday clothing! You probably won't want to arrange either of these events for the night before the
wedding as everyone will need time to recover afterwards!
11. Maximise Mood

On the day itself, make sure both the bride and groom are in as good a mood as possible so they can enjoy their Big Day.

12. Hire Staff

i) Bartender: If you are holding the wedding on a residential lot and have placed a bar in the reception area, you may wish to hire a
bartender otherwise your guests will have to help themselves to drinks. On community lots, if you place a bar object, a bartender will
appear automatically.

ii) DJ: You can't hire a DJ, but one will appear automatically if you place a DJ booth on a community lot.

iii) Maid: Hiring a maid can also be useful if the wedding is being held on a home lot as she will not only tidy the lot before the wedding
when the couple will be too busy for cleaning, but will also prevent the accumulation of dirty dishes, etc during the reception. She does
finish work at 5 p.m. unfortunately but, if you've befriended her in advance, you can always invite her to stay on as a guest!

iv) Nanny: If any babies, toddlers, children or pets would be left unsupervised on the couple's home lot when they leave for their
honeymoon, you will need to hire a nanny - this option will be given during the vacation booking process.

13. Transport the Bride and Groom to the Wedding Venue

Make sure both the bride and groom are on the lot where the wedding is to take place.

14. Issue Invitations

This can be achieved in three ways:

i) Wedding Party

It is only possible to throw a Wedding Party on a home lot. You can choose which Sims to invite, up to a maximum of eight guests (the
number of guests that may be invited depends on your computer). It is possible that not everyone who was invited will turn up - you can
maximise how many guests accept the invitation by building up relationship scores in advance and by having the Sim with the highest
relationship scores make the call. Wedding Parties are scored and last five Sim hours (approx. 5 minutes in real time).

ii) Invite Group

If the wedding is taking place on a non-home lot, use the Groups system (Nightlife onwards) to compile a guest list of your favourite
Sims and select Invite Group - either Just for Fun or For an Outing (scored). Again, high relationship scores will mean more guests
are likely to turn up. If you use a wedding arch to initiate the ceremony on a community lot, expect gatecrashers!

Remember:
if you want to have children at the wedding, hold the ceremony either after 3 p.m. or on a weekend - otherwise they won't attend
because they will be at school!
toddlers and pets cannot travel to vacation destinations
iii) Wedding Arch

If your Sims get married on a community lot, they can still have guests at their wedding without using the Groups system, so long as
they initiate the ceremony via a wedding arch. The wedding guests will be a random group composed of Sims who happen to be on
the lot at the time.

15. The Marriage Ceremony

Either a simple or wedding arch ceremony will do the trick. Remember, if you want the bride to take the groom's surname after the
marriage, make sure you get the groom to initiate the ceremony - otherwise he will take the bride's name!

16. Propose A Toast

If the wedding was initiated via a wedding arch and there is a toasting
set nearby, wedding guests will take it in turns to autonomously toast
the newlyweds.

N.B. This may go on for some time if not interrupted and may result in
all the wedding guests abruptly departing the lot in search of toilet
facilities!

17. Cut The Cake

After the ceremony, if you have placed a wedding cake nearby, you
may direct one of the newlyweds to cut the cake. Afterwards, the cake
cutter feeds some cake to his or her new spouse - which is very
sweet!

The guests don't pay any attention at all to this ritual until they
suddenly realise that there is now cake available to eat and all make
for the cake to grab a slice.

18. Wedding Photography

If you have Bon Voyage installed, you may wish to

appoint one of your invited Sims to act as official
wedding photographer by selecting any controllable Sim,
clicking on the photographer and selecting Take My
Picture.

Controllable Sims can be posed by selecting the Pose

self-interaction and choosing from the various
options. They can be re-positioned by selecting a Sim,
clicking on a posed Sim and choosing the Stand Next
To... interaction to position the selected Sim in relation to
the posed Sim. If you want to have non-controllable Sims
in the photograph, this can be done but it's a bit
tricky because they are...well...non-controllable!

After they return from their honeymoon, the Happy

Couple may choose to order a photo album or framed
prints by which to remember their Big Day.

19. The Wedding Breakfast

If the buffet has not been prepared in advance, have any controllable Sim click on the buffet table and choose Serve Food. Sims will
then autonomously help themselves and sit to eat if there are dining tables nearby.
20. The First Dance

Direct the newlyweds to the dancefloor. Have any controllable Sim turn on the stereo. Select one of the newlyweds, click on the other
and select Slow Dance (Nightlife onwards) or Dance Together (not quite as romantic!).

21. Get The Party Started

If none of the guests starts to dance, select any controllable Sim, click on the stereo and select Dance Solo then click on other Sims
and select Ask To Join. Group dances e.g. smustle, slap dance, hula, all go down well at weddings and other Sims may join
autonomously if you have one controllable Sim start a group dance - otherwise click on other Sims and select Let's Smustle, etc.

22. Wedding Presents

From Bon Voyage onwards, you can have any controllable wedding guest
give the bride or groom a wedding present using the Give Gift interaction.
Obviously, the Sim giving the gift must first have an item in their inventory
to serve as a gift. For added realism, choose items that are traditionally
given as wedding gifts e.g. coffee maker, blender, ornaments,
etc. Acceptance or rejection of gifts is based on gift value and
relationship scores between the Sims involved. As gift giving is never
autonomous, only controllable Sims can give wedding presents. This can
be achieved either by holding the wedding on the home lot of a bride or
groom who lives with other Sims apart from his or her fianc, or by having
the bride and groom visit their friends and family in advance to receive
their wedding presents.

You might also choose to create a gift table in the reception area using decorative piles of wrapped gifts from Buy Mode e.g. Mystery
Presents from Happy Holiday Stuff (275, found under Decorative -> Sculptures) and/or other appropriate household objects. You
could even extract gift items from the newlyweds' inventories and place these on the gift table for a traditional Show of Presents.
23. Fireworks display

This is a nice way to draw the proceedings to a close if you have Happy
Holiday Stuff installed.

24. Go On Honeymoon

The limousine / airport shuttle will arrive to take the newlyweds on their
Hi Pheebs_rj! My Profile Subscribe 0
honeymoon as follows, largely depending on whether or not youSearch
have the site Sims 2 Go
Bon Voyage (BV) installed:

at the end of the Wedding Party (if you don't have BV or have booked a BV
honeymoon in advance)
shortly after the ceremony (if you don't throw a Wedding Party and have
booked a BV honeymoon in advance)
not at all (if you don't have BV and don't throw a Wedding Party, or if you do
have BV but haven't booked a honeymoon in advance)
on a subsequent morning (if you book a standard BV vacation - although
technically this won't be termed a honeymoon)
25. It's All Over So Quickly!

Throwing a Wedding Party, arranging a scored group outing or booking a Bon Voyage honeymoon in advance all tend to cut the
celebrations short because each creates a finite end point. This does make it pretty tricky to fit in all the steps above. For more
prolonged nuptials, don't throw a Wedding Party - instead invite a group to the wedding "Just for Fun" and arrange a standard vacation
to begin a day or two after the wedding.
