The character that I admire the most.

There are many characters in the novel Catch Us If You Can written by
Catherine McPhail. Of all the characters, I admire Rory the most. There are many
reasons why I like him.

First of all, Rory was a loving and caring person. Rory was a school-going
boy who lived with his forgetful grandfather in their flat. Rory made sure that his
Granda took his meal properly. Every day after school, Rory would buy lunch for
his Granda. When his teacher, Mrs. Foley asked him to stay behind after school
to complete his homework, he cheated her by saying that his Granda had cooked
for him and was waiting for him to eat lunch together. However, Rory was the
one who always bought lunch for both of them. Moreover, he would also make
sure that his Granda took his medication on time. After the incident at the flat,
they had to be separated. Realising that Granda should not be at Rachnadar, the
old folks home, Rory planned an escape. Thus, I think that Rory is a role model
that we should look up to. We can learn that love and care towards the elderly is
very important.

In addition, Rory was also a patient boy. Rory never forgot to do his
homework. However, Granda who was forgetful had thrown Rorys homework
down the rubbish chute. Although he knew that Granda was the cause for his
missing homework, he never scolded him. He knew that Granda suffered from
memory lapse. Rory also patiently taught Granda how to behave in front of the
public on Parents Night.

Furthermore, Rory was also responsible. He was a young boy and should
be living a carefree life with his friends. He used to play football and was
considered good enough to be in school team. However, he refused to join the
team in order to take care of Granda. He also took full responsibility for the well-
being of Granda during their escape. He always made sure Granda was well-
rested and warm and did not have anything to worry about. In my opinion, Rory
is very responsible. We must be responsible especially to our parents after they
have taken care of us.

Apart from that, Rory was also an understanding person. When Granda
complained to Dr Nicol about Rory, Rory did not feel disappointed because he
understood that deep down, Granda did appreciate him. Even when Granda set
the flat on fire, Rory did not feel anything but love for his grandfather because he
knew Granda was only trying to help. At the caravan site, Granda was like a child
enjoying the fishing. To Rory, it did not matter if Granda did not catch anything.
The important thing was that fishing kept Granda busy and made him useful.

Hence, based on the reasons above I believe that Rory has many good
characteristics. As a teenager, we should make him as a role-model.
