Final Reflection to Instructor

Dear Professor Intawiwat,

Over the course of you class, I have learned a great deal about literacy. But I have also

worked beyond literacy. I have been able to connect my writing with cultures and technology.

The occasional readings have given me the opportunity to explore the writings of many great

authors. Media has played a large portion in my learning experience within ENG 111-127 and I

could not be more grateful for all of the knowledge I have obtained.

The Written Literacy topic, there was a major project and/or essay entitled This I

Believe. In this essay, I explained why I believe that everyone should learn to sew, in addition to

the benefits of it to sell my point. The audience I assigned to this essay would be any who found

themselves capable of carrying out such a craft. In regards to the purpose, I intended for the

essay to portray the benefits as well as the importance of sewing. There are many things that

could assist in the improvement of an individuals health. By writing the essay, I wanted to

persuade the reader to consider the art of sewing and its overall benefits. The revisions I was

given were minor but helpful in the flow of the paragraphs within the essay. I have learned the

most from the essays I have had to write majorly because they force me to think and they

challenge me to make the reader and/or audience to think and/or feel something. I learn that there

are many ways to make the reader and/or audience think or feel something. This project reflects

one of the SLOs through the composing process in regard to peer revisions.

The Visual/Oral Literacy topic included an essay also known as a Ethnography, on

subcultures. This Ethnography involved the studying and observation of an optional subculture.

Through this assignment, a claim would have been made and supported using Primary,
Secondary, Academic, and Internet sources. The essay I wrote spoke on teachers who work

within Public Education. The audience I chose was directed towards the general public, more

specifically, parents of child who attend a Public Elementary School. Mainly, the purpose behind

this essay was to unveil the true struggles of being an Elementary School teacher in Public

Education. The goal was to impact the publics view on teachers and to expose what they go

through and experience on a daily experience. Through minor revisions, I was able to execute

more clearly structured sentences. This assignment of course required the most work yet it was

the most enlightening assignment of the topic. This topic allowed me to almost play an

undercover role; revealing some flaws within the education system. I discovered that there is a

lot that we, the public do not know and do not see. I feel as though, in regards to the SLOs, this

topic and assignment included a large amount of critical reflection.

The Digital Literacy topic included a project entitled Digital Literacy Narrative. In this

assignment, I was challenged to think back to all of the forms of technology I have used over the

years and how they impacted me. This particular assignment did not have an intended audience.

Unfortunately, this project did not require peer revisions or editing. I found this assignment

interesting because it was a challenge. It is not every day that I think back to the technology that

I used when I was younger. I learned that technology is forever changing and that I used a great

deal of technology. This project reflects one of the SLOs in regards to rhetorical knowledge.

The Pop Culture topic included a project based upon a magazine. This assignment

required me to decide upon a pop culture genre and/or topic and create a magazine, featuring

articles surrounding that genre and/or genre. The purpose of this assignment was to mainly

construct a form of media within Pop Culture. In regards to the audience, I majorly targeted

Young Adult Females; early college students. I found this assignment interesting though because
I literally had to start from scratch to create a real magazine. That alone was fairly interesting.

This project reflected one of the SLOs through partial, critical reading.

One writing assignment I found particularly challenging was the Ethnography. This

assignment sincerely made me work extra hard to dot every i and cross every t. I was very

strategic with this assignment and executed every component carefully. The most difficult aspect

of the project was the writing portion. Of course, anyone can conduct an interview and search for

a few sources, but the act of combining those collaboratively in a paper takes time and skill. I

was very unsure for a while if I would be able to complete the assignment successfully because

there were so many things to complete and I am a horrible procrastinator. Nonetheless, when it

was all said and done, I realized that I had been worried for nothing. Even after the peer revisions

and the long hours, I was done and had received good feedback on my finished product. Overall,

this assignment strengthened my writing with included sources. This project most definitely

involved critical reflection and rhetorical knowledge.

In regards to my class participation, I have greatly enjoyed being self-motivated.

Throughout Elementary and Middle School, I was told that in High School no one would hold

my hand and make sure I was doing everything I needed to do. Well, that is the case for College

as well. I greatly enjoy independence and the idea of self-motivation sounded very liberating.

There was a lot of maturity and independence to college courses that I had yet not experience. It

literally goes as it is said, A closed mouth does not get fed. I feel as though in the classroom, I

participate a great deal when I feel the need to share my opinion or simply need a question

answered.

To conclude, I feel that there have been minor changes in my writing. I feel as though this

course has not mainly bettered my writing but instead redefined writing for me. This semester
has provided me with rules and strategies that will come into consideration when I writing my

essays in the future. I am a hard-working student and English has always been my best subject. I

came into this class with an open mind and a hunger to learn, and I am glad to say that I have. In

regards to my grade, I feel as though I am above average so an A or a B+ would be sufficient for

me. I perform well and I work hard. As a high school student, this course has been quite the

adjustment but I feel as though I have adapted just fine.
