This article describes how prescribed medications are not a safe way to treat anxiety.

Benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Atavan are being prescribed to treat anxiety, when in reality

they are causing more complications to need the medication. It states how millions have become

physically dependent on the drug because of the withdrawals they bring. Doctors have been over-

prescribing patients for their own budget, making the drugs seem less harmful than they really

are, as it states in the article Over Prescribing Benzos is Dangerous. Most patients being

treated with the drug are still suffering with anxiety. This article will help support my opinion of

having different methods of anxiety treatments excluding prescription drugs because of the

addiction dangers they bring.

Benzodiazepines can be highly deadly when mixed with other drugs, which is why actor,

Philip Seymour Hoffman, died of an overdose in February. This source discusses between a

group of people how dangerous the anxiety medication really can be. Not only is the drug easily

addictive, but its also easily prescribed. In the article, Sharon says, In her early 20s, Sayra

Small says she found it very easy to find a doctor willing to prescribe benzos for her anxiety. She

loved them because they worked so well (Susan). Which eventually caused Sayra to become

dependent on the drug. This source supports my opinion that benzodiazepines are not safe and

there should be a different method of treatment.

Some doctors have realized the harmful effects of the benzodiazepines and have stopped

prescribing them to their patients who show signs of being dependent on the drug. This source is

also a discussion between doctors about the harmful effects. Most of the prescribed medications

are being used for a high instead of the treatment for anxiety. Traffic accidents, aggressive

behavior and withdrawal difficulties were listed as the main problems (Beaumont), which

means it causes more problems than fixing them. The reason they are so addictive is the

temporary and quick fix it has on reducing anxiety. This source helps support my opinion that

benzodiazepines are harmful and you can become easily dependent on the drug.
