Overview
KCC is a leading, international supplier of process
equipment and packaged plants to the oil, gas
and petrochemical industries.
Glycol Gas Treatment
For over 50 years, glycols have been used in a
variety of ways to treat natural gas and reduce the
water dew point. Although other dehydration
systems (refrigeration, solid desiccant, and
membranes) have unique applications, glycols are
still the most widely used system.
MEG - Monoethylene Glycol is used for injection
into gas pipelines to inhibit hydrate formation.
A cost-effective alternative to Methanol for larger
flows, it can be easily regenerated with little
vapour loss. It does not achieve low dew points.
DEG - Diethylene Glycol can be used for
injection and dehydration, but is a compromise
in performance between the speciality glycols.
TEG - Triethylene Glycol is the most common
glycol used for closed loop dehydration and
regeneration. It can achieve very low dew
points and has the lowest vapour losses.
TTEG - Tetraethylene
Glycol is very stable
but has least affinity
for water so is rarely
used commercially.

Evolution of TEG GDU's
Early glycol units were simple. A vertical column
containing bubble cap trays was used as the gas
drying tower, and a simple heat exchanger,
stripping column and gas fired reboiler
regenerated the rich glycol, which was pumped
back around. As demand for higher efficiency
and lower glycol loss increased, gas stripping was
introduced, followed by more efficient column
packings to replace bubble caps, and more
sophisticated gas inlet and outlet demisting
devices. Heating, filtration and exchanger systems
also improved.
Modern System Design
Now-a-days some extremely sophisticated
technology is being employed, achieving water
contents down to just a few ppm - comparable with
molecular sieve units.
Modern contactor columns
using the latest structured
packing and mist
eliminators are much
smaller than the old bubble
cap types, and Petreco's
new Highspeedtray design
using swirl tubes achieves
yet greater size reduction
as illustrated below, whilst
reducing carry-over to
around 2 ppm.
