Federal Style - 1785-1820
Sometimes referred to as the Adam style, the Federal style is the American version of the British Adamesque style. The Federal style refers to the more formal
neoclassical style adapted by the affluent. Popular following the Revolutionary War, the style was seen as patriotic and used frequently in government buildings.
The most common Federal style symbol is the American eagle (Buffaloah.)
Typical Textiles
Fabric were either soft and fluid or they were brocade,
damask, or other heavy fabrics used for curtains and
beddings. The same fabrics were used in England and
France: plain silks, lampas, and velvet for formal rooms.
Tassels, tiebacks, and other trimmings were used
extensively to create a finished look. Top treatments for Figure 8 Carved Banisters Figure 9 Typical Materials (Wallpaper, Plaster, Moldings)
windows, such as valances and swags, were also popular.
Area rugs were used to add color and pattern over wood
floors.

Boston, Massachusetts
Boston is the largest city in New England and is also Massachusetts state capital. The birth of America was
founded on this city, and still remains a historic gem. The architecture is very colonial and there are some
historic buildings from the late 1600s that are still intact today, such as, the Paul Revere House. The
population of Boston is 617,594. And the time zone is EDT (Where is Boston, MA?).
Bostons climate is very mild. The summers are warm, but not sweltering. The winters are cold, but being so
close to the ocean, the temperatures arent as cold as cities further inland. There is rain throughout the year,
so theres never a dry season here. The average high in the summer is 81 degrees, while the average low in
the winter is 19 degrees (weatherandclimate.com).
Since the Pilgrims and Puritans made this city, the population to this day is rather religious, with 70% being
Christian. While this city was considerably conservative, the mold was broken with a lot of progressive people.
This makes the city a very open-minded and diverse place to visit. The education system is also higher here
with many of the worlds leading universities (Massachusetts History and Culture).
Concept Statement
The design for this transitional housing organization will utilize traditional-styled
furniture, a saturated color scheme, crown molding, and hardwood flooring to tie in
this Federal style space. The apartments will all have the same fixtures, cabinetry,
appliances, and flooring. The furnishings will vary in each apartment to give them
some individuality. This organization will be an inviting space for families to enjoy
while getting back on their feet.

The furniture selected for this project are soft and colorful, which is perfect for the families that will be
using these spaces. Especially those with children. There are no hard edges on the furniture and no
glass-topped tables. The color scheme that I chose to work with is the complimentary scheme, orange
and blue. The colors reflect the Federal style that this client is going for. The fabrics of the furnishings
are durable and stain resistant to ensure protection against spills. They are also low maintenance
fabrics. The pieces have a rhythm about them with the repeated finishes and colors. All of the wood
furnishings are dark stained. And all of the fabric furnishings have bright orange and blue colors to bring
this whole scheme together. Each fabric is made to withstand a lot of traffic since there will be multiple
families using each space.
The budget is not to exceed: $175.00/square foot.
Budget considerations:
-Allow 40% of the budget for construction and new building systems (plumbing, electrical,

-Allow 5%-10% of the budget for contingency costs
-Your design fee must be included within the budget allowance
-Allow for freight and installation of furniture and equipment

Justification
Which of elements and principles (light, color, line, texture, balance, proportion, harmony,
etc.) are dominant and subdominant in the design, and how do they support the concept?
For my project the style of the building gave the inspiration for the design of the interiors.
Since the building was in the Federal style, my design had to tie in with this also. The colors,
furniture, and materials were all chosen with this in mind. The dominant elements and principles
in this design are color, balance, and harmony. The subdominant elements are emphasis, texture,
and rhythm. I used a pretty bold palette for this design to bring in some energy to this multi-
family space. I wanted everyone to be able to come together and get to know one-another and
feel welcomed. With Federal style, there is a lot of symmetry, so I went with a more symmetrical
furniture layout for the gathering space. And harmony was achieved with the use of the same
finish on all of the wood furniture.
The emphasis was on the coffered ceiling detail, as well as the custom wall feature.
Texture is found in the flooring as well as the furniture. And rhythm is found in the lighting,
colors, and furniture as well.
How does your design reflect the culture and diversity of the client who will occupy the
space? How do the furniture, finishes, lighting selections, and custom elements meet the
needs of the women and children living in the transitional housing?
The clients that will be using this space are families that come from many different
backgrounds, but all with the same goal, which is to get back on their feet and start again. The
furnishings are all soft-edged to ensure children dont get hurt, as well as durable to last many
years with the expected wear and tear of many families coming in and out of each space. The
overall use of these furnishings is to give comfort to those staying here. The goal is to make each
space as though it were the home of each family.
How did universal design application, code, or egress requirements and environmental
design choices influence the decisions you made throughout the design process?
This project was pretty hard regarding the space planning of each apartment. The ADA
codes were major influences in the final design decisions for public spaces, as well as, ADA
compliant apartments. The public hallway was widened to allow wheelchair accessibility. The
restroom was given grab bars, and the direction of door swings was changed to allow enough
room for 5 foot turn-arounds. The furniture layout had to be spacious enough for all users to
access each space easily. Even though there wasnt an abundant amount of square footage, the
final result was a smart arrangement of spaces with the occupants needs in mind.
Reflection
This class has been very interesting, but not easy by any means. From the beginning of
researching a historical style, to figuring out a floor plan, the transitional project was a challenge.
Although some assignments took a lot of time to put together, it was still enjoyable to see the
design moving along and coming together. The top 3 topics/concepts that I feel are the most
helpful are the following;
1. Creating a historical style database I think this was such a helpful tool in coming up
with the design for my project. It is always easier to remember a particular style when
you see it more or have it in a file to look at whenever you need it. This is something I
will try to do with every style I want to work with. You never know when a client will
want a certain style that youre not used to working with, so having a style database is an
awesome tool to have.
2. Coming up with color palettes with images Ive always been intrigued with how one
can come up with a color palette based off of an image, artwork, etc. This was something
Ive done in past classes, but I still find very useful for interior designers. Photoshop is
very helpful in doing this. I find it far more fun to come up with a color scheme from an
artwork, rather than just picking two or three colors from a paint manufacturer. I feel that
this brings more creativity to the design as well.
Working with a team was something I had only done once in a previous class, so I was still sort
of new to this sort of thing. With that being said, it was very enjoyable to be able to work with
team members to come up with a combined file full of information. I like how it took the stress
out of a huge project, and made it more enjoyable. This is something that will definitely benefit
me for future project when I become an interior designer. Working with a team is vital in this
industry with so many different aspects of interior design, so this experience is crucial.
