Paper Sponge Activity (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them into the
mindset of the concept to be learned) Before the students arrive, I will have the
room split up into debate formation. Students will have to split in half and I
will give them each a side to an argument. The topic will be Should

students be required to wear uniforms?

Anticipatory Set (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the days
lesson)

Ask the students:

-How do you argue?

-How do you make a valid argument?

Activating Prior Knowledge (what information will be shared with/among students to connect
to prior knowledge/experience) Think about when you had to convince your mom
that you needed those sneakers for your birthday OR that time that you
had to convince Ms.Santana that you needed an extension on the paper.
What type of words did you use? How did you successfully get your point
across?

Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)

When you are writing an argumentative essay, it is important that you

comply with the following steps:

Evaluate: Determine which side of the argument they agree

with.
Develop a logical argument: Tell us why you believe something
is true, and tell us more than on reason why.
Compare and Contrast: Compare both sides and explain why
their argument would be more valid than their opposed
argument.
Form an opinion: How does the student feel about this?

Guided Practice (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)

-Students will be given a laptop or use any form of technology in order to

look up sources who have spoken on the topic Should students be
required to wear uniforms?. Previous to this class I will have to show
students how to use google scholar therefore, this should only take up
about 15 minutes.

-It is important that students look up both sides of the argument because
they have to bring attention to their opposing side in order to strengthen
their own.

Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)

For homework students will bring in an outline to an argumentative essay

on why they think they should or should not have to wear uniform. They
must use 1-2 sources. I will also explain to them that it is more beneficial
to use a source that is pro uniform and one that isnt.

Closure (action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an appropriate

close)

Students will take turns giving me the steps to and argumentative essay
as a short review.
