Series EX560 and EX760 Systems Overview
Series EX560 and EX760 systems are Steelhead EX appliances designed for
small office deployments. The following table summarizes the Series EX560
and EX760 hardware platforms.

Front-Panel Features and Indicator Lights
Figure 1-1 shows the controls, connectors, and indicator lights located on the
system's front panel (shown with the optional front bezel removed). Table 1-2
provides descriptions of the front-panel features.

LAN and WAN Port Indicator Lights
Two LAN-WAN interface pairs are provided by the included 1 GbE TX copper
network interface card (NIC). The status of each port is indicated by four
columns of three LEDs adjacent to the four ports. The LAN and WAN ports are
located at the system back panel, as shown in Figure 1-2, "Back-Panel Features
and Indicator Lights" on page 5.
Figure 1-3 shows the locations of the LAN and WAN ports and the port status
indicator lights. Table 1-4 lists the port name, interface name, and location of
status lights for each port. Table 1-5 describes the codes for the port indicator
lights.

In the Steelhead Management Console and in the Riverbed Command-Line
Interface (CLI), you reference the LAN and WAN ports by their interface
names. The interface names for the gigabit Ethernet ports are formed by
combining the port type (lan or wan), the number of the slot containing the NIC
(0), and the number of the port pair (0 or 1): lan0_0, wan0_0, lan0_1, and
wan0_1.
NOTE: In Series EX560 and EX760 systems, the LAN and WAN port pairs are
numbered in descending order (1, 0) from left to right.

System Diagnostic Indicator Lights
A row of four system diagnostic indicator lights on the system front panel
displays error codes during system startup.
Table 1-6 lists the causes and possible corrective actions associated with the
system diagnostic indicator light codes. A highlighted circle indicates the light
is on; a non-highlighted circle indicates the light is off.

System Messages
System messages appear at the system console to notify you of a possible
problem with the system. Table 1-7 provides probable causes and corrective
actions for system messages.
NOTE: If you receive a system message not listed in the table, check the
documentation for the application that is running when the message appears or the
operating system's documentation for an explanation of the message and
recommended action.

Field Replaceable Units
Series EX560 and EX760 systems contain several field replaceable units
(FRUs) that you or a certified service technician can troubleshoot, remove from
the system, and replace without having to send the system to a repair facility.
IMPORTANT: Perform troubleshooting or repairs only as directed in the product
documentation or by the online or telephone service and support team. All other
servicing should be performed by a certified service technician only. Your warranty
does not cover damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed. Read
and follow the safety instructions in the Safety and Compliance Guide.
Table 1-8 describes the field replaceable units available for Series EX560 and
EX760 systems.

If any individual system fan is faulty, Riverbed recommends that you replace all three fans.

Non Field Replaceable Units
Many components inside Series EX560 and EX760 systems are not field
serviceable or replaceable.
IMPORTANT: Perform troubleshooting or repairs only as directed in the product
documentation or by the online or telephone service and support team. All other
servicing should be performed by a certified service technician only. Your warranty
does not cover damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed. Read
and follow the safety instructions in the Safety and Compliance Guide.
This document mentions several non field replaceable components for reference
purposes only, such as the following:
Solid-state drive (SSD) System board
Control panel board assembly 1U single-slot riser card
Power supply unit (PSU) 64-bit processor
PSU fan Heat sink
Cooling shroud System coin cell battery
If the system front panel displays a diagnostic indicator code that refers to a
system component that is not field serviceable or replaceable, the corrective
action described in Table 1-6, "Codes for System Diagnostic Indicator Lights"
on page 9, instructs you to contact Riverbed Support.
Similarly, if you encounter a system message that refers to a system component
that is not field serviceable or replaceable, the corrective action described in
Table 1-7, "System Message Causes and Corrective Actions" on page 11,
instructs you to contact Riverbed Support.

System Board Connectors
The system board occupies about two-thirds of the chassis footprint, aligned
against the system back panel and the right-hand side of the chassis. Figure 2-2
is a diagram of the system board with connector locations shown. The edge of
the board shown at the top of the diagram is located against the system back
panel. Table 2-1 describes the system board connectors.

Pull the bezel away from the system.

Removing the System Cover
1 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.
NOTE: Before you remove the system cover, always turn off the system and
and disconnect the system from the power source. Leaving power on can
cause permanent electrical damage to electrical components in your system.
2 Rotate the latch release lock counter clockwise to the unlocked position. See
Figure 2-4.
3 Grasp the cover on both sides while pressing your thumbs on the latch release
lock and the indent, carefully slide the cover toward the back of the system,
and lift it away from the system.

Installing the System Cover
1 Align the cover with the left and right edges of the system and offset it
slightly towards the back of the system, so that the pins on the inner edge of
the cover are aligned with the chassis hooks.
2 Slide the cover toward the front of the chassis till it locks in position.
3 Rotate the latch release lock in a clockwise direction to secure the cover.

Keep the following points in mind when you remove the cooling shroud:
The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during normal
operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had sufficient
time to cool before you touch them.
Never operate your system with the cooling shroud removed. The system
may get overheated quickly, resulting in shutdown of the system and loss of
data.

IMPORTANT: Troubleshoot or replace FRUs only. Troubleshoot or replace
FRUs only as directed in the product documentation or as directed by the Riverbed
online or telephone service and support team. All other servicing should be
performed by a Riverbed certified service technician. Your warranty does not cover
damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed.
1 Position the cooling shroud by aligning the guide slots with the guide screws
on the system board. See Figure 2-5, "Removing and Installing the Cooling
Shroud" on page 30.
2 Push the cooling shroud down until all edges are secured to the system board.

Supported Memory Module Configurations
Table 2-2 shows the supported configurations of 4 GB memory modules in
Series EX560 and EX760 systems. Socket numbers are labeled on the left side
of each socket. The socket labeled 2 is nearest to the 24-pin power connector.

Memory module sockets labeled 2 and 1 are the first sockets of
channels B and A, respectively. The first socket of each channel
is identified by white release levers.

2 Turn on the system and then note the messages on the screen.
If an error message indicates a fault with a specific memory module, go to
step 12.
3 Turn off the system and then disconnect the system from the power source.
4 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and
"Removing the System Cover" on page 28.
5 Wear a grounding wrist strap.
6 Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on page 31.
7 Locate the four memory modules. See Figure 2-1, "Inside the System" on
page 23 and Figure 2-2, "System Board Connectors" on page 24.
CAUTION: The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during
normal operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had
sufficient time to cool before you touch them.
8 Check that the memory module sockets are populated correctly. See
"Supported Memory Module Configurations" on page 34.
9 Reseat the memory modules in their sockets. For details, see step 7 on
page 36.
10 Install the cooling shroud. See "Installing the Cooling Shroud" on page 32.
11 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and
"Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.
12 Reconnect the system to the power source, and turn on the system.
13 As the system boots, observe any error message that appears and the
diagnostic indicators on the front of the system.
14 If the memory problem persists, you need to replace the faulty memory
module. Contact Riverbed Support at https://support.riverbed.com.

3 Wear a grounding wrist strap.
4 Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on page 31.
5 Locate the four memory module sockets. See Figure 2-1, "Inside the System" on
page 23, and Figure 2-2, "System Board Connectors" on page 24.
CAUTION: The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during
normal operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had
sufficient time to cool before you touch them.
6 Press down and out on the ejectors at each end of the socket until the old memory
module pops out of the socket. See Figure 2-6.
IMPORTANT: Handle each memory module only on either card edge, and
avoid touching the middle of the memory module.
7 Press down and out on the ejectors at each end of the socket, as shown in
Figure 2-6, to allow the new memory module to be inserted into the socket.

8 Align the memory module's edge connector with the alignment key of the
memory module socket, and insert the memory module in the socket. The
memory module socket has an alignment key that allows you to install the
memory module in the socket in only one way.
IMPORTANT: Handle each memory module only on either card edge, and
avoid touching the middle of the memory module.
9 Press down on the memory module with your thumbs to lock the memory
module into the socket. When the memory module is properly seated in the
socket, the ejectors on the memory module socket align with the ejectors on
the other sockets that have memory modules installed.
10 Repeat step 7 through step 9 of this procedure to install the remaining
memory modules. See "Supported Memory Module Configurations" on
page 34.
11 Install the cooling shroud. See "Installing the Cooling Shroud" on page 32.
12 Close the system cover. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and
"Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.
13 Reconnect the system to the power source, and turn on the system.

2 Locate the faulty fan indicated by the output of the RiOS CLI command
show stats fan. The command output displays the current RPM and error
status of the fan that you specify.
3 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.
4 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and
"Removing the System Cover" on page 28.
5 Remove the cooling shroud. See "Removing the Cooling Shroud" on
page 31.
CAUTION: The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during
normal operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had
sufficient time to cool before you touch them.
6 Reseat the power cable of each system fan. For the locations of the three
system fans, see "System Board Connectors" on page 24.
7 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and
"Installing the Front Bezel" on page 27.
8 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.
9 If a fan does not function, turn off the system and install a new fan.
See "Replacing a System Fan" on page 39. If the replacement fan does not
operate, contact Riverbed Support at https://support.riverbed.com.

CAUTION: The memory modules and heat sink can get very hot during
normal operation. Ensure that the memory modules and heat sink have had
sufficient time to cool before you touch them.
NOTE: The fan can continue to spin for some time after the system has been
powered down. Allow time for the fan to stop spinning before removing it
from the system.
4 Disconnect the fans power cable from the system board. See Figure 2-7.
5 Grasp the old or failed fan and lift it away from the fan assembly. See
Figure 2-7.
6 Ensure that the new or replacement fan is oriented correctly. Orient the fan
module so that the side with the power cable faces the back of the system.
7 Lower the fan into the fan assembly until the fan is fully seated. See Figure 2-7.
8 Connect the fans power cable to the fan power connector on the system
board.
9 Repeat step 4 through step 8 to replace all three system fans.

11 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing

12 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.

installed in an expansion-card riser. The NIC is not hot-swappable.

Replacing the Network Interface Card
IMPORTANT: Troubleshoot or replace FRUs only. Troubleshoot or replace
FRUs only as directed in the product documentation or as directed by the Riverbed
online or telephone service and support team. All other servicing should be
performed by a Riverbed certified service technician. Your warranty does not cover
damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Riverbed.
1 Unpack the NIC and prepare it for installation. For detailed instructions, see
the Network Interface Card Installation Guide.
2 Turn off the system, and then disconnect the system from the power source.
3 Open the system. See "Removing the Front Bezel" on page 27 and
"Removing the System Cover" on page 28.
4 Disconnect all cables from the network interface card.
5 Lift and rotate the expansion-card latch. See Figure 2-8.

6 Grasp the old or failed NIC by its edges and carefully remove it from the
connector on the expansion-card riser.
7 Holding the new or replacement NIC by its edges, position the card so that
the card-edge connector aligns with the expansion-card connector on the
expansion-card riser.
8 Insert the card-edge connector firmly into the expansion-card connector until
the card is fully seated.
9 Close the expansion-card latch. See Figure 2-8.
10 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing
the Front Bezel" on page 27.
11 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.
12 Re attach the Ethernet cables to the LAN and WAN ports.

5 Install the new or replacement hard disk drive and attached drive carrier into
the chassis.
a Align the four slots under the drive carrier with the four tabs on the
chassis. See Figure 2-9.
b Slide the drive carrier toward the chassis wall till it snaps into place.
6 Connect the SATA power and data cables to the two receptacles at the back
of the hard drive. See Figure 2-9, "Removing and Installing a 3.5-Inch Hard
Drive" on page 47.
7 Close the system. See "Installing the System Cover" on page 29 and "Installing
the Front Bezel" on page 27.
8 Reconnect the system to the power source, and then turn on the system.
