Energy In A Cell Respiration & Photosynthesis

Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are complementary reactions. In this lab,

you will review both processes and put the steps of each in order of occurrence. You
will gain from this exercise an overall understand of how these processes work
hand-in-hand in cellular organisms.

You will go to the following website: http://glencoe.mcgraw-

hill.com/sites/dl/free/0078757134/383932/BL_25.html

After reading the guide, you will work to move the puzzle pieces in order of
occurrence from top left to bottom right.

Once you have the pieces in the correct order after checking for accuracy, you will
then perform a print screen of the complete puzzle and insert it into this worksheet
(last question). This usually involves clicking the Function key (FN) and the Print
Screen key (Prnt Scrn).

Once you have completed the puzzle and print screen you will answer the remaining
journal questions below. Please answer all questions in another color font.

Save your file as .doc or .docx and upload it into eCampus in the proper lab section
for grading. Do NOT copy and paste it into the text box on eCampus.

Journal Questions:

1. What is the importance of the light and dark reactions in photosynthesis?

During the light reactions of photosynthesis, light energy from the sun is captured and used to

make ATP and NADPH. During the dark reactions, ATP, NADPH, and carbon dioxide combine

to make glucose and other compounds.

2. What happens to food energy during photosynthesis?

Food energy is stored in chemical bonds during photosynthesis.

3. What happens to food energy during cellular respiration?

Food energy is released by the breaking down of those bonds during cellular respiration.

4. Why is photosynthesis important to you as a living organism?

Photosynthesis is perhaps one of the most primary processes for the survival of species that do

not make their own food. Without photosynthesis, there would be no food production.

5. What are the processes in cellular respiration?

Glycolysis and the Krebs cycle are the processes in cellular respiration. During glycolysis,

glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid. The pyruvic acid enters the Krebs cycle where it is

broken down further and energy is produced.

6. Why are photosynthesis and cellular respiration viewed as complementary

processes?

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration can be viewed as complementary processes because the

product produced by each process is used by the other. During photosynthesis, H2O (water) and

CO2 (carbon dioxide) and sun energy are used to produce O2 (oxygen) and glucose. During

cellular respiration, O2 and glucose are used to produce H2O and CO2 and energy.

7. Describe the similarities and differences between photosynthesis and cell

respiration.
In photosynthesis, food is synthesized and then stored as glucose, carbon dioxide is taken in,

oxygen is given off, and the process requires light. In cellular respiration, food is broken down

and the energy from glucose is released, oxygen is taken in, carbon dioxide and water are given

off, and the process does not require light. Both photosynthesis and cellular respiration use

cycles and electron transport.

8. Put the puzzle together in the correct order with the 2 additional blank spaces
at the end of the bottom line (on the right side). Your puzzle must flow from
photosynthesis to respiration (left to right / top to bottom). Do not have any
gaps in your sequence when you perform the print screen (the program will
say it is correct with spaces; however, you will lose credit if spaces are
present anywhere other than the end). When you have successfully solved
the puzzle, you will have a message of Congratulations. Attach your print
screen of the puzzle below (be sure to include the entire image including the
statement that appears when you have the puzzle correct and the time/date
stamp on your computer screen):
