Define Problem
Problem, stated as an open-ended question:
"How can we housemates prevent the resentment that is building up among us over our messy
environment?

We discussed the problem amongst each other and came to the following conclusions about the
issue.
Analyze the Problem
Characteristics: Jordan Newbould: The characteristics of this issue would be the tasks that we
assign each of the housemates and how we distribute those tasks evenly. When sharing the
household with 4 other students its important to distribute the household cleaning
responsibilities evenly between all of them. Instead of dropping hints, we suggest that each of
the housemates directly informs the others about which task need to be accomplished around
the house. As school gets more demanding you assign a cleaning responsibility to each
housemate that they must adhere to for that month. For example, one housemate would be
cleaning the bathroom, while another would be doing dirty dishes.
Stakeholders : Morgan Nickerson: The groups affected would be the roommates, the messy
roommates, the landlord, the college, family and friends of roommates, and family and friends of
the messy roommates. The messy roommates would feel responsible for tension in the house,
could be fined or evicted, personal life and grades could suffer, and they could affect their
relationship with their family and friends. The other roommates would have to live in an
uncomfortable environment, grades could also suffer, could hurt outside relationships because
house is messy and no one wants to hang out there, and they could possibly be held
responsible might have to pick up slack for others. The landlord might have to fine or evict
tenants, which would make them lose their income from tenants and might make them drop out
which would make the college lose their tuition money. Friends and family of other roommates
might not want to go over because of the mess, but may need to let their loved one stay with
them because they cannot stand to be in the messy house. The friends and family of the messy
roommates family and friends: If the messy roommate gets evicted or fined, burdens cold end
up being placed onto the family and friends to help them with a place to stay.
History : Ailed Miller:
Early Communication Methods
Communication has existed in various forms since man appeared on Earth. The methods,
however, consisted of a disorganized set of signs that could have different meanings to each
human using them. It wasnt until three million years after mans debut, around the year 30,000
B.C.E, that communication began to take on an intentional, manufactured format. The most well-
known form of primitive communication is cave paintings. The artistic endeavors were created
by a species of man that appeared around 130,000 B.C.E, the homo sapiens. The method
involved creating pigments made from the juice of fruits and berries, colored minerals, or animal
blood. These pigments were then used to create depictions of primitive life on the cave walls.
The purpose of the paintings has been questioned by scholars for years, but the most popular
theory states that the depictions were used as a manual for instructing others what animals were
safe to eat. (History of Communication from Cave to the Web pg23)
Other forms of early communication existed, although they were less popular for a variety of
reasons. Story telling was used to pass on important information in the days before the existence
of the written word. However, since man still lived in separate tribes, this information could not
be applied outside ones own tribal community. Drums and smoke signals were also used by
primitive man, but were not the most practical means of communicating. Both methods could
attract unwanted attention from enemy tribes and predatory animals. These methods were also
difficult to standardize. (History of Communication from Cave to the Web pg:25)
Until recent centuries, the only way to increase the speed of communication has been to
improve the speed of the messenger.(www.historyworld.net)

It may be hard to believe but the first cell phone research began in 1843 when Michael
Faraday conducted research to see if space could conduct electricity. Fast forward to1973, and
Dr. Martin Cooper is credited with inventing the first portable handset. Four years later, cell
phones go public. In the 37 years the cellular phone industry has existed, the market has grown
from $3 million annually to an industry that commands $30 billion annually. The customer base
has also expanded from an initial trial population of 2000 to more than 60 million cellular phone
owners in the United States. (History of Communication from Cave to the Web pg:106)
Who uses cell phones? Everyone! Cell phones can be found everywhere in modern America.
Landlines are slowly becoming obsolete as everyone from senior citizens to elementary school
students acquire their own cell phones. The convenience of having a phone at the ready is a
concept that is very easy to market, and gives people the freedom to communicate at anytime of
the day.(Article, History of communication)
Nowadays you can choose from a lot of different ways of communication, there are multiple
apps for housemates that can help communication to be effective, there are also lots of ways to
get your point across without hurting your housemates feelings. In the era that we live we need
to choose the best way of communication. Effective communication helps get the job done on
time and within budget. Housemates who can communicate, and relay objectives, reasoning
and specific tasks in a concise and coherent manner, using the right tools fit for purpose,
contribute significantly more to the success of a good relationship than those who fail to
communicate efficiently during day-to-day activities.

Policies and Politics: Bradley Cornell:

We think politics come into play when thinking of everyone's personalities and be attentive to
everyone's work loads and schedules. Its good to understand peoples personalities because it
may help you understand if someone is not physically or mentally able to do a certain chore. We
think where policies come into play is making sure that people get chores that they are able to
handle. So we think it is good to understand where everyone schedules line up. For some it may
not be feasible with their schedule to do a more time consuming chore because they have a
large project due that week . So I think it's good to always have open communication with your
roommates because it may not be that they are being lazy and may be just that they had
absolutely no time during the week. I think you should also set up consequences for what
happens if other people dont get their chores done but have a mutual agreement of it being
everyones responsibility in the end.
