Section 3 Comprehension

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Use complete sentences.
Please use correct grammar and spelling.

1 Drought is caused when the average rainfall for an area drops below the normal amount
for a long period of time. In some cases, it may be years. Droughts occur almost
everywhere. A drought is quite different from the normal dry season experienced in
Trinidad and Tobago during the months of January to June every year.

5 In areas that are not irrigated, the lack of rain causes farm crops to whither and die.
Higher than normal temperatures, usually go with periods of drought. These
temperatures destroy more plant life than usual. Therefore, forest and grass fires are
more frequent and spread quickly. Rivers, ponds and wells often dry up. Animals
suffer and may even die because of the lack of water.

10 Droughts cannot be easily predicted. However, steps can be taken to reduce the effects.
Reservoirs can be built to store extra supplies of water. Limited settlement and housing
should be set up in areas that are likely to be affected by droughts.
