Subject: Project Assessment Memo
Choosing a topic for the Poster Series Assignment was not a difficult task. The topic we chose
was the use of tobacco products because many people use these products on a regular basis. We felt like
using this topic could reach out to people and promote awareness. Tobacco use is a relevant issue because
it is not just a problem in the United States but worldwide. These posters will show reasons why people
should resort to implementing better habits because of the health risks involved with tobacco use.
During this assignment we encountered few problems. It was very easy to gather information on
the topic because of many readily available resources. Although, we did have to review and revise the
second poster due to the fact that we did not realize it had to be based on a solution. Fortunately finding
solutions to the use of tobacco and how to cut back usage was clearly outlined information. Also, the fact
that we had family members who were previous tobacco users contributed to our interest and knowledge.
When creating my posters, we selected certain designs that we felt were eye catching and would attract
the audiences attention. For example, the stop sign with tobacco in the middle is used to represent that
this poster is about prevention awareness. Our thoughts behind this selection were that we had to ensure
that my posters appealed to the audience. Discourse conventions were very important in order to grasp
and hold the needed audiences attention. In order to get my point across I needed to know what discourse
conventions I needed as my main focus. Our discourse community were ages 12-17 and 18-25.
The most challenging part of this assignment was making sure the posters had enough
information while also making sure they would get the audiences attention, and not be too overwhelming
with information and graphics. We wanted to make sure the poster would not lose importance because of
being too wordy. Our systematic approach for both my posters would be logos and ethos. This, partially
because of all the different information provided. There is a small amount of pathos when the different
effects are listed because we are trying to reach their emotions through helping them visualize what could
possibly happen to them with continued tobacco use. We believe the most effective part of our posters
was not the design but the information on the poster. The information is clear enough and will convey the
purpose of our posters, which is awareness, through to the audience.
