Audience research:

Age -
My final production would aim at an age group of 15 21 year olds this age
group covers those who have a passion for the songs that will be featured in my
production. The songs used are the main attraction for the production, one song
is from the up growing genre known as grime which has a younger audience
which can start from an age as young as 10! However the youngsters who listen
to this genre will not understand the content of the production e.g. the plot so I
have decided to aim it at the slightly more mature young adults. The other songs
used are currently very successful in the American hip hop and RnB with artists
such as 6lack and Travis Scott who have a large fan base. For primary research I
have attended Travis Scotts live events and noticed that his audience can be as
old as 25 and older however I believe that 21 is a realistic maximum age as I
dont believe a large amount of people aged older would be interested in a short
film production on YouTube.
Gender -
For gender I would not exclude either genders as on one hand the songs chosen
will appeal to males who have a passion for the modern music scene with the
usage of the hottest musicians in America such as:

6lack
asap rocky
Travis Scott
Cousin Stizz

These artists all have

predominantly males due to the main character being male but would hope that
the music and aspects of the film may appeal to females.
Socio- economic
My production would aim at the group E those with a low disbursable income
such as students or those starting a career in creative jobs at the lowest levels
who would be looking for inspiration for their work. Specifically I would be looking
at those who depend on listening to music every day and have an interest in
music videos I wouldnt like to aim this video at just those who live in the UK
however the plot and song choices would favour those who live in the urban
areas of places such as London.

Idea Research

Both ASAP rocky and common have


created short narratives and have integrated songs into these creating music
videos for songs used. These would be seen as competitors however they would
have been given large budgets and teams to create and develop these powerful
pieces. The ASAP rocky short film has a narrative which explores the life of a
young female who is involved with crime in the UK whereas the Common short
film explores the lives of black people who live in the poor parts of America.
These pieces have differing goals one to provide entertainment the other to raise
awareness.
There is no apparent market for short films made by rap artists as a whole
however as artists try to make themselves look more talented and diverse there
has been a rise in the amount of longitudinal music videos being released for
example Kendrick Lamars last few songs have all featured music videos with a
storyline behind them or the Weekend who created a whole short film for his
whole album. Adding a storyline or plot to the song allows the song to develop
the idea of it having a meaning or purpose.
On ASAP Rockys VEVO account his short film Money man has reached his
highest amount of views of 4.5million it is apparent this doesnt match his
previous song however the purpose of this video was to promote two songs from
his album which caused a numerous amount of reviews all giving it a rating of 4-
5 starts.
It is obvious that I will also have to address the competitors of the artists I have
chosen to use and analyse who is more successful.

What I noticed when looking at these artists main competitors is that they have
released a lot more music videos than the ones I have chosen which gives them
a bigger presence on YouTube they also are at either the pivotal point of their
career or have been in the music scene for a long time.
Mine would be unique due to the usage of silent footage narration and montage
images, there will be more than one song and the plot of the film will be to raise
awareness about the lives that some urban youths live with a narrative which
explores all differing aspects.
