Patton, Larry T. The Rural Homeless. Rockville, MD: U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, Public Health

Service, National Center for Health Services Research and Health Care Technology Assessment, 1989.

Print.

This source started out by saying how little the rural homeless receive attention. The

severity and duration of the crisis are overwhelming community support networks. Its purpose

is to educate people on what homelessness is and what we can do about it. In the section on

Defining Rural Homelessness, the main argument is how can you define who is considered

homeless. Do we exclude those who pay nominal rents? How do we treat those living with

friends? This is the dilemma of this section. Another section called Reason for Homelessness

discussed how when grouped in males and females and asked to identify the major cause of

their homelessness, both groups overwhelmingly cited economic factors as the most important

reason and then the second reason as family problems. The point is that people are homeless
McAbee 2

for several reasons and struggle to get out of it. Once youre homeless and unemployed it is

hard for one to find work again and then some no longer even have the motivation needed.

This source is great for my inquiry because it is the first step. Before we can know how to

get the services the right supplies, we need to know what those right supplies are and then

what homelessness really is. Reading this source has opened my eyes to a whole other subject

and is leading me to something new as well. We need to figure out what homelessness is, before

we can figure out what they need and then how to get it to agencies.

I know this is a credible source because it was published as an official document from the

U.S Department of Health and Human Services. Having said that, I also know this is a credible

source because there are dates that show statistics. The author of this source is Larry T. Patton

and during the time of when he was writing it he was the Service Fellow in the Division of

Intramural Research, National Center for Health and Human Services Research and Health Care

Technology Assessment, US DHHS.

Kenyon, Thomas L. What you can do to help the homeless: creative and effective contribution

the individual, families, and businesses can make. New York: Simon & Schuster., 1991.

Print.

In this book, it goes through about thirty-four chapters of ways you can help the

homeless. The main focus is on the fact that you can do something to help the homeless and they

give you all thirty-four reasons to show you that its not just about the donations, but about how

you can do more for them. The argument being made is that the homeless can be helped in

multiple ways, so why are people not doing more for them? The book goes on to discuss more

ways the homeless can be helped and also gives contacts based on the chapter you are reading to

assist you in your service.

This book is perfect for my inquiry because it goes through so many ways you can help

the homeless. Pertaining to my inquiry, this book has a chapter all about how you can understand

the homeless. Not only does it go with my inquiry but also goes into more details.

I found that this book is credible because it came from the National Alliance to End

Homelessness. It is a United States-based organization which means they focus on the United

States solely and their main priority is to address the issue of homelessness. They provide

research and data as well to inform the elected officials.

Breakey, William R., and James W. Thompson. Mentally Ill and Homeless: Special Programs for

Special Needs. Amsterdam: Harwood Academic, 1998. Print.

This book points out how there are many different types of homeless people and each

group has a different set of needs. The needs can vary based on all sorts of other factors too

though. The main focus in this book is that special programs are facing a significant number of

challenges because the numbers of mentally ill homeless people is rapidly growing. Not only

does this book discuss the topic of homelessness and mentally ill but it mashes them together too

and gives examples of programs that can assist that issue as well. The book goes through six

research projects and the solutions they found were the best. It also discussed the problems that

were faced with each and the failure or success of it.

I think this book is perfect for my inquiry because it sheds light on the fact that there are

different groups of homeless people, whether they are mentally ill or just homeless because of

poor life choices. My inquiry is about getting the services the goods they need and this book

brings light to the fact that the needs are different among different people.

When it comes to credibility to this book, the six projects that are discussed throughout

the book are from the Federal McKinney Homeless Act. This book also the editors both have

outstanding degrees, one having a Bachelor of Medicine and Fellow of the Royal College of

Psychiatrists. The other has a medical doctor degree and Master of Public Health. I felt like with

those titles they were both in title to talk about this subject.

Homelessness, Health, and Human Needs. Washington, D.C: National Academy Press, 1988.

Internet resource.

This online book not only talks about the homeless but also gives many definitions for it.

The homeless all have one problem the same, no matter what group they fall into and thats the

lack of a home. They all have different needs to tend to but that lack of a place to call home is

something that is a problem for every homeless person.

This online book is a good source for my inquiry project because it discusses the topic of

what homelessness is and what the things are that people need to survive. Knowing the needs of

the human population is important to me because in order to get the shelters and services what

they need, you first have to know what it is that they need. After reading this e-book I learned

that people are often turned away from shelters because they do not have the supplies needed to
McAbee 5

serve and help them. This information just drives me to want to find answers to my inquiry even

more.

This e-book was published in the Library of Congress so that alone made me think that

this source was credible. Not only that but it came from the National Academy of Sciences. I felt

like with those credentials that this source was a credible one and was perfect to use.

Miskin, Jol. "Help the Homeless." Adults Learning, vol. 10, no. 9, May 1999, p. 25. EBSCOhost,

librarylink.uncc.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com.

This article really sheds light on homelessness and what it really means to be homeless. It

gives key points and focused on education for the homeless. It went on to argue that the needs of

the homeless go beyond just the supplies and could be things like education.

I chose this article because I felt like it really was really inspiring and included important

parts of my inquiry. When talking about educating the homeless, it would not only help them

long term but teach them too. Teach them things to help them get jobs because everyone knows

without education you can forget getting a job where you can support yourself, let alone a family.

Even though my inquiry is about how programs that serve the homeless can get the supplies they

need but thats just it, they need education. Yes, giving them blankets will keep them warm but

will not help them overall. Providing them with the services they need is really the challenge.

I felt like this source was a credible one because it came from the Workers Educational

Association. They are known for promoting the education of working men. Not only that but the

Association helped so many people and I felt like they could write an article on this topic and it

be credible.
