Researching Transitional Housing

For this assignment, I called upon Janis Entingh, founder and operator of My Sisters Place of Columbus, Ohio. Located in Downtown Columbus, this transitional housing for women can be reached by calling

614-565-9023. Janis was extremely helpful for this research project, in that she provided me with first-hand knowledge of what it means to operate a transitional home. While My Sisters Place solely provides

housing for women that are homeless, this transitional home works with other area homeless shelters to assist people of any gender or age. Janis responded that the number one goal for her organization is to

assist women that are drug addicts, or victims of human trafficking or abuse, in a faith-based setting.

Figure 4) Exterior Image of My Sisters Place, Columbus, Ohio

Local organizations partner with Janis and the volunteers of My Sisters Place to assist those that are looking to change their lives for the better. One organization, Clean Turn, works side by side with Janis

and her staff to assist recovering addicts and felons with interview and job finding skills. Talbot Hall, Amethyst, and other area treatment facilities also partner with My Sisters Place to offer counselling services to

those that just need a friends help.

In regards to the facility itself, Janis provided that there are community spaces (living/television area, dining hall) within the housing where friends gather to enjoy one anothers company. There are also

private quarters that each offer two women their own bed to sleep on, a desk, chair, dresser and closet space. Most that stay at My Sisters Place are just so thankful for the place to sleep that other needs really

cannot compare. One thing however that is greatly appreciated is a hot shower. Unfortunately, the facility is small and has limited amenities. When I asked Janis what design considerations should be priority when

designing a transitional home, she quickly responded, WE NEED MORE SPACE! which reflects the unfortunate reality that plagues the large city of Columbus, Ohio. Another suggestion was to offer separate levels

that correlate with the possible stay length of the women. Phase I, or those that need anywhere from 1 30 days of residence, could utilize one unit of the housing development. Then Phase II (31 60 days) and

Phase III (60 days 1 year) could have their own respective sections as well. This would allow for a smoother transition when new friends come to stay at My Sisters Place.

San Francisco Culture

According to San Franciscos Informational website, The culture of San Francisco is major and diverse in terms of arts, music, festivals, museums, and architecture (Culture in

San Francisco). A few great museums in the area are, The Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), The Exploratorium, and The California Academy of Sciences. Common tourist

attractions include The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and The Wine Country. With a wide variety cultural backgrounds mixing in this diverse atmosphere, many different styles of

art and architecture are present in the city. According to World Cities Culture Forum, San Francisco is known as a center for the American Counterculture and was a birthplace of

the gay rights movement (San Francisco). The website further explains that the presence of Silicon Valley has made the city a world capital for the creative and tech

industries (San Francisco).

Elegant and feminine combines with confident and
CONCEPT progressive in this Queen Anne Style home, to establish a
STATEMENT sense of family and security for the residents of Annes
Place. In an effort to revitalize the historic housing locations
in San Francisco, the design solution for Annes Place will
pull inspiration from the style in which the home was built.
Intricate yet minimal details in wood carvings and moldings,
paired with period finishes and colors in fabrics and surfaces
conforms to the craftsmanship that is omnipresent within
the late Victorian style. Separate zones within the home will
provide a place for homeless women and children to both
embrace the company of others in communal gathering
areas, and feel safe from the dangers of living on the streets
in private apartment-style quarters. Universally designed
apartments will accommodate individuals from all walks of
life, through strict compliancy to ADA standards. Design
considerations will focus on the functionality of the space, as
well as an aesthetically pleasing environment, reflecting the
multicultural background of San Francisco, California.
COLOR STUDY
Color Palette 1

Empowering the residents of Annes Place to move forward in

life is one main goal of the establishment. To encourage a
feeling of strength and majesty within the transitional home, a
monochromatic color scheme in the purple range would serve
well. The bold tones of purple are confident and drawing, and
would create emphasis within the home. The more subtle tints
of lavender and periwinkle offer a balance to the scheme, and
would be employed on large surfaces and forms. This
application of softer hues hold true to the historic Queen Anne
Style in which the house was built, and works to open the space
(Violet Reflections)
up by not being too powerful (Advancing Color Theory).

MONOCHROMATIC
Color Palette 2

Another trait that is promoted at Annes Place is confidence. In

the transitional home setting, things happen fast at times and
one may feel that life is leaving them to chance. A decisive color
scheme, using shades and tints of blue and orange will work to
establish an orderly feel within the home. This effort ensures
residents with a secure place to call home. The complementary
color scheme is sharp and bold, and reflects the vivid exterior of
the Queen Anne Style home and the multicultural atmosphere
of San Francisco. Adjustments to this vivid palette would entail
brightening things up just a bit to take the stern edge off.
(Clementine's) Utilizing this color scheme in the Entry and Gathering Areas
would promote a sense of welcoming.

COMPLEMENTARY
Color Palette 3

To offer a sense of balance to the previous palettes, a split

complementary color palette should be considered. The
dignified blues and purples of this scheme are calming and
offer a secure feeling. In contrast, the warm tones of creams
and yellows invigorate the spirit, inspiring one to take life by the
reigns. In application, the bold colors will serve as accent to the
more subdued hues. To modify this palette in favor of the
Queen Anne Style, adjustments to the high intensity of this
scheme would be beneficial. In the right combination this color
palette could be used throughout the home working to unify
(Blue, Purple and Yellow) the residence as a family-oriented setting.

SPLIT-COMPLEMENTARY
Custom Color Palettes
OPTION 1 OPTION 2

The first three color palettes have been adjusted to arrive at the two options that are shown
here.
Option one, the warmer palette, follows the complementary color palette that was provided
earlier. Hues in the blue and orange sections of the color wheel have been lightened in value
and lowered in saturation to develop this muted color scheme that is representative of the
Queen Anne Style. The complementary emotions of belongingness and confidence ring
through with this color palette, and will provide the residents of Annes Place with a feeling
of home.
Option two, the cooler palette, utilizes a split-complementary color palette. Muted hues in a
darker value from opposite ends of the spectrum strive to balance, elegance and luxury with
practicality and progressiveness to result in an environment that instills these values in its
residents. The softer values of these hues are characteristic of themes found in the Queen
Anne Style.

Material Maintenance for Annes Place

FL 1: Patcraft Modular Carpet in Gathering Areas

Carpeting is covered with SSP Shaw Soil Protection, protective treatment providing
and easy to clean carpet. All solids should be removed from the surface. Liquid spills
should be absorbed into a dry cloth immediately. Applying pressure to the area to
absorb liquids is preferred over rubbing area, as carpet pile fibers may unravel over
time.

Carpet should be vacuumed with standard commercial vacuum cleaner, set on the
correct brush height setting, on a three times per week basis, or as needed.

Carpet should be professionally cleaned at least once per month, or on an as needed

basis.

When using chairs or other furnishings that have casters, a protective chair mat is
recommended to protect the face of the carpet.

FL 2: StrandWoven Bamboo

Vacuuming bamboo is recommended above sweeping which pushes debris across

the floor which may cause scratching.

To clean, use a non-wax hardwood flooring cleaner. Simply mist the cleaning solution
onto the floor and then wipe away with a terrycloth floor cleaning head. If streaking
occurs, alternate a mist of water and solution until clean and free of streaks.

Under no circumstances should a wet mop be used on this floor. Bamboo is a highly
absorbent material that will expand if saturated.

To prevent moisture and debris build up, doormats should be used near entries.
Make sure that all doormats are cleaned regularly. Avoid using rubber backed mats
or non-ventilated rugs as this can trap moisture, causing damage to the bamboo.

WC 1 AND 2: EcoSelect Zero VOC Interior Latex Paint

Cleaning painted walls is fairly simple due to satin paint finish that is specified. A few
tips for general washing are as follows.

Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild, soapy water. Always remember to thoroughly
wring out cloth/sponge, as too much water can ruin a paint finish.

Wipe by applying gentle pressure in a circular motion.

Rinse clean with a damp cloth to remove excess cleaner.

For areas where grease may splatter (kitchenettes) try using grease-cutting
dishwashing detergent in warm water, using the same techniques described above.

To ensure the quality of the paint finish, test a small, inconspicuous area of the wall
to perform a test of the solution.

Justification of the Solution

Within the finalized project, there are many instances where the elements of art and principles of design come into play.
Balance, being the most dominant of the traits, is achieved in a few different ways. Interesting textures in woodwork
and fabrics throughout the newly designed transitional home, are complemented with simple, muted paint colors to
achieve a unified design solution that promotes a safe and inviting living arrangement for all that rely on the services of
the home. To balance the sturdy, somewhat hard surfaces that were incorporated into this design, soft textures in
furnishing materials were incorporated to take the rigidness out of what can sometimes be found in transitional homes.

Other elements and principles that fall into the subdominant category are rhythm and line. Wainscoting with intricate
wood trims and moldings create repetitious patterns throughout the home that subtly enhance the design solution. Line
is also incorporated through this application to balance the curvaceous, feminine forms of the Queen Anne Style.

Through intricate selections and practical applications, the design solution for Annes Place promotes a welcoming
environment to women and children that are in search of a safe haven from living on the streets. With the home being
located in San Francisco, California, a location known for having one of the countries largest percentages of homeless
citizens per capita, security and a welcoming environment are key elements that are necessary to comfort those that
have fallen on rough times.
Justification of the Solution (cont.)

A communal gathering area is what residents are greeted with as they enter Annes Place. The large space combines
group areas for conversation or other activities, with a kitchenette where mothers and children in a secure setting can
feel at home, going through their transitional periods of life. Also incorporated in this area is a study or play area for
children that offers a comfy setting with additional storage. The main feature of the gathering area, and perhaps the
central hub of Annes Place, is the custom built-in that utilizes Queen Anne details in a functional, informative, and
progressive manner. The built-in, at first, seems to simply offer great storage and display areas for items used within the
home. However upon closer inspection, a focus on the success stories of previous clients is showcased in an award
winning fashion, with detailed plaques and focal lighting. This addition will serve as inspiration to newcomers at Annes
Place, showing that even through hard circumstances, the fellow residents and staff of Annes Place will continue to
strive toward offering a safe place to call home.

While the communal areas of the home provide a sense of belonging to the residents, private areas are vital to
emotional stability as well. The home offers four small apartment style sections that work well to ensure a safe and
stable living environment. Two, one bedroom apartments and two, two bedroom apartment can be worked to serve
any family configuration that should arise. All furnishings within the apartments are kid friendly in design and resistance,
with rounded corners and treated, easy to clean fabrics.

Another important aspect that was considered through the entire design process was the necessity to develop a
functional residential home that was universally designed for all that may find their selves at the front door of the
residence. Strict adherence to federal ADA guidelines ensures that individuals of all abilities are able to use the facility.
Fire rated materials as well as inspected egress routes also guarantee the safety of those staying at Annes Place. Lastly,
special attention to environmental design was incorporated through the use of easily renewable, bamboo flooring and
VOC-free latex paints.
Reflection

This has been a very interesting, and quite challenging experience in many ways. A few concepts that I have pulled from this
project that will stick with me through my remaining years as a student and in my professional career are as follows.

Conducting thorough research at the beginning of this project made easy work out of the selecting the necessary elements
to follow the historical style that was desired. Conducting a survey of the typical elements allowed me to immerse myself
into the style, and then soon I was searching the web and my textbook for particular elements that would only enhance my
design.

Utilizing peer (and instructor) feedback throughout the entire project was vital to my success. While I am a pretty confident
person in life, and in my design work, it is always great to value the opinion of others in the profession. These multicultural
influences and critical observations have worked to fine tune my design solution into the best solution for the
clientswhich is what its all about!

Finally, making sure to allow myself enough time to proactively create awesome solutions is crucial to my success. I found
myself at times feeling overwhelmed with the massive amount of work that was required to complete such a project. I
found that working on assignments, or aspects of the project, just a little at a time with many breaks was the best way to
createand keep my sanity!

As I continue following my aspirations of becoming an interior design, it will be vital to store the experience of this project in my
memory. One additional experience that was very important to my success here was the team efforts that resulted in a huge
part of the project. The research portions of this project would have been very exhausting to complete alone. Working in a team
made conducting such extensive research a breeze, and is something that I had never valued until completing this project.
