Reflection 2

Polaris Expeditionary Learning School has an overall positive culture and

environment built upon growth mindset, project-based learning, and student
accountability. Middle school policies used by all teachers were helpful in
managing my classroom in this environment. For instance, students know to
focus back on the teacher after a synergy clap. Students also know that 100%
participation is expected in the clap. Additionally, refocuses that escalate from
1 to 2 to a hall conference are effective ways at guiding a student back on track
without scolding, raising your voice at, or embarrassing them. These small
components contribute to the overall positivity of the school. Elements of each
day such as Crew also make an impact. In Crew, students share how they are
feeling during circle up, get help with academic work, and create online
portfolios to show off their learning. Values such as being a team member and
taking ownership of ones own learning are built through this time.
Students at Polaris choice-in to the school, so many are from vastly
different neighborhoods. Some students have attended Polaris since elementary
school while others are brand new 8th graders. Most students at Polaris come
from white, middle class backgrounds; however, there are exceptions. Some
students face challenging home lives for a vast array of reasons and carry this
with them into the classroom each day. Academically, Polaris serves a range of
students. Integrated services is a key part of each classroom to ensure that
students with accommodations and needs can receive a quality education.
Friend groups amongst students are clear, and typically middle school drama
does occur. Generally, students appear to be accepting of the differences
between one another and willing to work together as a school community.
Adults within and outside the school help foster this sense of community.
Staff members meet often for all school meetings, PLCs, and team meetings. All
staff members are friendly, willing to collaborate, creative, and passionate
about the values of Polaris. I know that every staff member will always be
willing to support me, answer questions, and share resources at Polaris. Many
Polaris parents are very invested in their childs education. Parent meetings are
constructive and framed with the best interest of the student in mind. Parents
also have opportunities to volunteer for Presentations of Learning, praise
students at the Celebration of Learning, and stay informed through Student-
Led Conferences. The network of parents at Polaris has been helpful for holding
students accountable for homework and long-term projects because a quick
email to parents often produces more investment at home.
With all of these aspects in mind, one clear strength of Polaris is strong
relationships among students, staff, and families. This has shaped every part
of my classroom environment and culture. I make the classroom feel safe
because I get to know students on a personal level. We discuss norms together
before any vulnerable moments like sharing work, providing feedback, or
writing poetry. Students are able to grow and learn from feedback that is
specifically tailored to them because they know that I care about them. Without
these strong relationships throughout the school and the community, Polaris
would not shine as brightly as it currently does.
