At the University of New Mexico there are numerous resources to help students succeed.
The college has multiple libraries available to students and faculty, they are open to the public as
well during certain hours. But, why would the University have so many different places to go to
get information? Well, the libraries all have specific purposes, which center around various
subjects. For example, if you wanted to have information on health-science then you would
simply go to the HSLIC or Health Science Library and Information Center at North Campus,
which is a short walk from Main Campus, according to the website they have an abundant
materials, bibliographic databases, and other electronic resources to serve the needs of UNM
HSC students, faculty, staff and the public this information could be found at the HSLIC website.
Being a student that is interested in the medical field I have found this resource to be very
helpful in deciding as well as confirming what specific medical field I would like to go into. A
library primarily used for the medical students there are numerous HSC students (North campus
medical students) whom are going through various programs at North Campus and could
possibly, if they have time, explain what the programs are exactly like. Different events also
happen around North Campus such as undergraduate shadowing, Pre-Med information sessions
and orientations, including preparations for the MCAT and other workshops which is all
information that is located at HSLIC. If by any chance the library does not have a specific item
you are looking for then you may make a request and they will get that to you. We select,
purchase, license and make available library resources for health-sciences-related learning and
research.
As stated before there are many valuable health related medical books, journals and
databases for individual and community health concerns. According to Rimbaud, a librarian, the
HSLIC is the only academic medical library in the state of New Mexico! Not only that the
library has many archival materials from the history of medicine in New Mexico, they own items
that have been donated by health care professionals in the state of New Mexico, such as doctors
bags with medicines, surgical instruments, photographs, records, and personal papers. They have
a genuine skeleton that was part of the collection received from the Valmora (NM) Tuberculosis
Sanatorium. As well as many rare books. During finals week, there is a hub of activity, however,
this does not necessarily mean there is not space available. There are numerous people who are
both apart of the North campus and not a part of North campus who use these library resources.
The HSLIC sees many students and community members from all disciplines and levels of
society. Once you walk in you are greeted by the staff, they are kind and informative but not
overbearing, the building itself is very beautiful with lots of windows and study places. Walking
into the library you are presented with a friendly, profound, and awareness of the dedication of
Number 234 on the campus map, the library is the three-story building on the southeast
corner of the "M" parking lot, next to the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education. The
front of the building faces the Sandia Mountains (HSLIC Website). From Lomas, simply go
north on Yale to Tucker, then turn right onto Tucker. Immediately on your right-hand side, you
will see the "M" parking lot and a row of pay-station spaces for public use.
I recently learned in an interview that the HSLIC has multiple interesting exhibits on
display such as the exhibit that explores the life of James H. Steele, Frontier Doctor in which it
includes items from the HSLIC`s health historical collection, including many medical
instruments and medicines he used. Not only that but they offer information on Shakespeare and
The Four Humors there is an online exhibit of this as well at the HSLIC`s website. The HSLIC
displays some bookplates found within the HSLICs collection along with other artifacts and
collections. So, whether it is literature for leisurely reading or for a paper, research or maybe you
just want to look at some awesome artifacts then this is an excellent resource available to you, in
The library helps the medical community as a whole by providing these resources. We
improve and enhance human health through support, innovation and leadership in the secure
organization, delivery and use of quality information. Deliver technology to foster the
development and sharing of knowledge among the HSC and its partners. HSLIC library faculty
began collaborating with the SOM (School of Medicine) Medical Student Research Committee
to provide consultation and class sessions in support of the medical student research requirement.
