EDUC 350 Field Notes- Chapter 9 Building Ratio Through Discussion

In the chart below give one concrete example of when you saw each technique in action. If you did not see it then
describe a situation where you believe it may have been helpful.
Habits of Discussion In economics, Mr. Strate expected us to talk loudly and clearly
to make discussion more effective. He also required students
to listen to others talking.

Turn and Talk Allowing students to quickly discuss when youre having a
difficult time getting them to participate in conversation will
help get them involved. Questioning them and then asking
them to collect thoughts with a peer can help them be more
confident.
Batch Process My English teacher, had us discuss the book we were reading
in small groups. She took attendance and got herself
organized while we discussed. Letting students talk without
her interference helped us take ownership of our work.
Below, please explain how each of the examples you saw/created help to get all student engaged in the
classroom and learning.

Expecting students to communicate loudly, clearly, and with a strong voice helps engage all students. Not
many students will listen to each talk if they cant hear them or it seems uninteresting. Requiring all students
to listen during discussion makes them accountable for learning what others have to say. It also keeps them
on task and participating. Giving students the opportunity to collect their thoughts with peers before giving
answers gives them confidence and reassures the students who might not have known the answer. It allows
them to confirm their thoughts or come up with a response with help from peers. Letting students
communicate with one another without teacher interference sets a level tone for the classroom. Some
students feel more comfortable discussing with peers than the teacher. This helps get each student
engaged in the work. .9
