FOREWORD

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS! It gives me great pleasure to see innovative

and productive teachers making a great effort to produce teaching materials to be used in the
classroom. MAS is very much needed to help teachers to face the challenges in an LEP class.

The MAS module is aimed at students who are in the borderline of passing the exam.
Teachers should seriously use this module to complement their teaching in the classroom.
Therefore, I sincerely hope that the English teachers in Pasir Gudang will put the CD to good
use.

Finally, congratulations also to the Pasir Gudang English Language Panel for providing
the platform for this programme to materialise. Keep up the good work.

PASSAGE 1 Hari Raya Celebration
1 The word Hari Raya literally means Celebration Day. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is
celebrated at the end of the Muslim month of Ramadhan. During the month of Ramadhan,
Muslims from all over the world observe a month long fasting and abstinence from sunrise
to sunset.

2 The Ramadhan month is actually a great time for a holiday in Malaysia. At the close
of each fasting period everyday, which is generally around 7pm, the celebrants would enjoy 5
a great meal. All over the country you will be able to find food bazaars that are specially
organized to sell food during this holy month. This is where you would be able to sample
some of the finest Malay cuisines.

3 Since the Muslim Calendar actually follows the Lunar Cycle, the dates for Hari Raya
Aidilfitri change each year. The exact date is announced when officials from various parts 10
of the country view the New Moon from various vantage points around the country. I will
place an approximate date for future celebrations at the end of the post. While these dates
will only be confirmed upon the sighting of the new moon for that period, being around
during these dates will definitely give you a good chance of joining in during your holiday
to Malaysia. There may even be times when Hari Raya falls on the same date or close to 15
another major celebration such as Chinese New Year or even Deepavali.

4 A typical first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri starts of with families visiting the graves of
their loved ones. Then its off to the mosque for mandatory prayers after which everyone
decks in their best traditional clothes and visit the homes of their family and friends.

5 Hari Raya Haji is a celebration to mark the return of their loved ones who have 20
travelled to Mecca for the Muslim pilgrimage. One of the highlights of the celebration is the
slaughtering of livestock mainly cows that is done in the spirit of religion and community.
This act is done voluntarily and the meat from the slaughter is then shared with their
families, neighbours and friends with special attention paid to the poor. The intention of
this is to not only foster better relations but also as a reminder to the rich of the poor who
live among them. 25

6 If you happen to be on a holiday to Malaysia during Hari Raya, especially Hari Raya
Aidilfitri, be sure to visit some of the numerous Open Houses that are organized by the locals and
even prominent figures. Open Houses are organized for every festival as part of the Malaysian
Culture and even strangers are invited to enjoy the festivities. Just be sure to dress up a bit.

It is at these times that you will be able to sample the best of Malay Cuisines. The Rendang is
7 30
a must during Hari Raya. This is a thick chicken curry that is cooked with peanuts and is eaten with
Ketupat which is compressed rice cooked in woven packets made from leaves. Another favourite is
Satay which is chicken or beef roasted on sticks kebab style. Favourite beverages during Hari Raya
include Air Bandung which is Rose Syrup missed with evaporated milk and also Soya Milk with
black jelly cubes. 35

PASSAGE 2 - Parkour Malaysia
1 PKMY or Parkour Malaysia is a community of parkour and freerunning practitioners around
Malaysia. Our goal is to unite all the practitioners in Malaysia under one banner and to create a community
that is void of discrimination. We are not a group, a team, or an entity, but a community. We are part of an
ever growing community of parkour practitioners worldwide.

PKMY has been around since the year 2003, pioneered by a group of youths from Sarawak who went
2 5
by the name Goujitu. Sabree who is one of the original members of Goujitu is still actively participating in
the local parkour community up till now. Despite being one of the earliest practitioners of Parkour in
Malaysia, they remained relatively underground throughout the lifespan of their activities, remaining
unknown in the Peninsular, until they disbanded due to studies and other unavoidable reasons.

Later in 2006, Qayyim and Azizi formed the first parkour group in the peninsular to upload their 10
videos on youtube followed by siblings Amir Hamzah and Ammar Haidhar. They would then proceed to
3 spread the practices of parkour around the Peninsular. With a goal of uniting all of the practicioners of
parkour in Malaysia, they rallied under the PKMY banner.

The community really started off largely with the help of Youtube as a means of communication and 15
advertising of sorts for different groups and communities all over Malaysia to make themselves known.
4 Qayyim, Azizi, Amir and Ammar continued to reach out to the different Parkour groups around the Klang
valley in order to spread the right message and to encourage a sense of camaraderie among each other right
from the start. The community is still utilizing the internet as the primary means for communication even
today.
20

Our first official jam was in December 2007 (which would be held annually in December of every
year) hosted and organized independently by the pioneers of PKMY which include Qayyim, Amir, Abudi,
Sabree, Ammar, Siddiq, Asyraf, Azam, etc with a turnout of around 20 people. Amir also received his first
5 offer to provide his expertise in Parkour for a TV commercial for Marigold in that same year.

The list of commercial job offers will later expand towards the rest of the Pioneers of PKMY in the 25
years to come that will be listed after this article.

In 2008 we collaborated with The Ministry of Youth and Sports for their Cabaran Kecergasan
6 event in Taman Titiwangsa and the Ministry of Tourism in conjunction with their Putrajaya Extreme Sport
Competition with an attendance of around 50 parkour practitioners on both events.
30
We continued our collaboration with The Ministry of Youth and Sports with their annual Cabaran
7
Kecergasan events in 2009 and 2010 and would later receive our own booth to demonstrate and educate
the public about parkour and its presence in Malaysia in 2010. We also provided free workshops for all of
our big jam sessions and for all the public demonstrations as well. We will also be participating in this
years Cabaran Kecergasan event once the details are ironed down.
35
8 In 2010 we gathered the most number of practitioners from all around Malaysia, Singapore and with
a couple from Australia and Sweden which amounted to roughly around 200 attendees, the largest jam we
had organized. It would also be the first jam that was done with the full consent of the Putrajaya authorities
organized independently by the pioneers of PKMY and we believe that its definitely going to get larger
with each passing year.

PASSAGE 3 - A Singing Sensation

1 Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born on the 5th of May 1988 in Tottenham,
north London, England, to a single English teenage mother named Penny Adkins
and a Welsh father on 5 May 1988. Adele's father Mark Evans split from Adele's
mother when Adele was 3 years old, for which Adele had not forgiven him as of
2012. 5
2
She began singing at age four and asserted that she became obsessed with
voices. Adele has cited the Spice Girls as a major influence in regard to her love and
passion for music, stating that "they made me what I am today." Adele impersonated
the Spice Girls at dinner parties as a young girl. To make her look like
singer Gabrielle, her mother made an eye patch with sequins, which Adele said was 10
embarrassing. At the age of nine, Adele and her mother, a furniture-maker and adult
learning activities organiser, relocated to Brighton. At the age of 11, Adele and her
mother moved to Brixton, and then to neighbouring district West Norwood, in South
London. West Norwood is the subject for Adele's first record, "Hometown Glory",
written when she was 16. After moving to South London, she became interested in 15
R&B artists such as Aaliyah, Destiny's Child and Mary J. Blige.
3
Adele says that one of the most defining moments in her life was when she
watched Pink perform at Brixton Academy. "It was the Missundaztood record. I was
about 13 or 14. I had never heard, someone singing like that live. I remember
feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hit me. It was incredible." 20
4
Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in
Croydon in May 2006, where she was a classmate of Leona Lewis and Jessie
J. Adele credits the school with nurturing her talent. In school, she was more
interested in going into A&R (Artiste and Repertoire) and hoped to launch other
people's careers. Although she moved away from North London aged nine, Adele 25
remains an ardent fan of her hometown Premier League football club Tottenham
5 Hotspur.

Today, Adele is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Adele was

offered a recording contract from XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo
on MySpace in 2006. The next year she received the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" 30
award and won the BBC Sound of 2008. Her debut album, 19, was released in 2008
to much commercial and critical success. The album is certified four times platinum
in the UK, and double platinum in the US. Her career in the US was boosted by
a Saturday Night Live appearance in late 2008. At the 2009 Grammy Awards, Adele
6 received the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. 35

Adele released her second album, 21, in early 2011. The album was well
received critically and surpassed the success of her debut. 21 helped Adele earn
six Grammy Awards in 2012 including Album of the Year, equalling the record for
most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in one night. The album has also

56
helped her receive numerous other awards, including two Brit Awards and 40
three American Music Awards. The album has been certified 16 times platinum in
the UK; in the US the album has held the top position longer than any other album
7 since 1985.

The success of 21 earned Adele numerous mentions in the Guiness Book Of

World Records. She is the first artist to sell more than 3 million copies of an album 45
in a year in the UK. With her two albums and the first two singles from 21, "Rolling
in the Deep" and "Someone Like You", Adele became the first living artist to
achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the UK Official Singles Chart and the
Official Albums Chart simultaneously since the Beatles in 1964. With her third
release from the album, "Set Fire to the Rain", becoming her third number one 50
single in the US, Adele became the first artist in history to lead the Billboard 200
8 concurrently with three Billboard Hot 100 number ones.

Adele is also the first female artist to have three singles in the top 10 of
the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, and the first female artist to have two
albums in the top five of the Billboard 200 and two singles in the top five of 55
the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. 21 is the longest running number one album
by a female solo artist on the UK Albums Chart and is the longest running number
one album by a female in Billboard history. In 2011, Billboard named Adele artist
of the year. In 2012, Adele was listed at number five on VH1's 100 Greatest Women
In Music, and American magazine Time named Adele one of the most influential
people in the world.

PASSAGE 4 Green Tea
1 India and China were among the first countries to plant tea. There are three main varieties of
tea -- green, black, and oolong. The difference between the teas is in their processing. Green
tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains powerful antioxidants called
polyphenols. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including
ultraviolet rays from the sun, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution) also are damaging. 5

Green tea has been consumed throughout the ages in India, China, Japan, and Thailand. In
2
traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, practitioners used green tea as a stimulant, diuretic
(to promote the excretion of urine), astringent (to control bleeding and help heal wounds),
and to improve heart health. Other traditional uses of green tea include treating gas,
10
controlling body temperature and blood sugar, promoting digestion, and improving mental
processes.

3 Studies indicate that the antioxidant in green tea may help prevent heart disease. In fact,
researchers estimate that the rate of heart attack decreases by 11% with consumption of 3
cups of tea per day. In another small study of male smokers, researchers found that green
tea reduces blood levels of harmful LDL cholesterol. 15

Several studies have shown that both green and black teas help protect against cancer. For
4
example, cancer rates tend to be low in countries such as Japan where people regularly
consume green tea. However, it is not possible to determine whether green tea actually
prevents cancer in people.
20
In one study, researchers found that women who drank black tea and powdered green tea
5
were less likely to develop bladder cancer. In one study of 472 women with various stages of
breast cancer, researchers found that women who consumed the most green tea
experienced the least spread of cancer. However, women with late stages of breast cancer
experienced little or no improvement from drinking green tea. Among women under the age
25
of 50, those who consumed 3 or more cups of tea per day were 37% less likely to develop
breast cancer compared to women who didn't drink tea.

Green tea has been used traditionally to control blood sugar in the body. . Studies have
6 shown that men who drink more than 10 cups of green tea per day are less likely to develop
disorders of the liver. Green tea also seems to protect the liver from the damaging effects of
alcohol. Results from several animal and human studies suggest that one of the polyphenols 30
present in green tea, known as catechin, may help treat viral hepatitis. Studies suggest that
green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat. Some researchers guess that
substances in green tea known as catechins, are responsible for the herb's fat-burning effect.

PASSAGE 5 War

1 It started like any other working day. We had our feed at 6:00, drills at 7:30.
Suddenly the person who I adored most (Joey Lewis) plonked the heavy leather
saddle on my back. Next Joey grabbed his sword from where he had left it and
mounted my back. This must mean WAR. Our leader, Sir John, lined us up. Thankfully
I was next to my two best friends, Winston a 16.2hh Arab and Wellington a 5
handsome bay gelding. Then with a slight squeeze of Joeys heels, we were off.

We cantered along a dry, dusty track for about 20 minutes before coming to a
massive open and sandy piece of land. It must have gone straight for at least
2 15miles. Joey pushed me onwards further and further into the battle. Next a gun
fired in our direction and Wellington fell to the floor. Sadness overwhelmed my
10
whole body. Suddenly Joey fell to the floor with a heavy thud. Although I was
terrified, I had to run away. Just keep moving, I told myself. I cantered forward for
about half a mile before side tracking to the left towards some woods.

An hour must have passed before a shadow emerged from the battle ground and I
suddenly realised it was Winston, rider-less and scared. After we had had a rest we 15
decided to see what was on the other side of the woods and so Winston and I set off
3
at a gentle walk. When we emerged on the other side of the woods there was a
beautiful lake. Winston and I walked over to the lake and drank. Standing on the
other side of the lake was a girl wearing a beautiful, flowing white dress. When she
finally reached us she patted us gently and her voice was kind. When she was 20
looking at Winston I felt a terrible pain in my foot, I then realised that I must have
trodden on a stone when I was running. The girl saw I was in pain and carefully lifted
up my foot before pulling out a large and very sharp stone. Instantly my pain was
gone and I felt I could trust her. Next she gently took mine and Winstons reigns and
led us towards a house on a nearby hill. 25

When we arrived at the house we saw that this was a nice place to live. The girl led
4 us into the clean and airy stable block, which was just behind the house. When she
returned she was carrying hay and a young man was following her, doing the same.
The girl put some hay in my stable and the man put some in Winstons stable. Next I
30
heard the man say in a surprisingly kind and gentle way Theyre probably from the
war on the other side of the woods, the girl just nodded and walked away. I have
now stayed at Blue Lagoon for 7 years and Natalie (the girl) is the kindest owner I
have ever known. Winston loves it here an Mike (the young man) loves him with all
his heart. Natalie and Mike ride us in the woods almost every day. I couldnt ask for
35
more, my life is bliss.

PASSAGE 6 Eating Disorder

1 A person with an eating disorder may have started out just eating smaller or larger amounts of
food than usual, but at some point, the need to eat less or more goes out of control. Eating
disorders are very complex. The two main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and
bulimia nervosa Eating disorders are real. They frequently co-exist with other disorders such as 5
depression, abuse or anxiety. People with eating disorders also can suffer from other health
problems such as heart conditions or kidney failure, which can lead to death.
2 However, in more chronic cases, specific treatments have not yet been identified. In these cases,
treatment plans often are given to the patient's individual needs that may include medical care
and monitoring; medications; nutritional counseling; and individual, group and/or family
psychotherapy. Some patients may also need to be hospitalized to treat malnutrition or to gain 10
weight, or for other reasons.

3 Anorexia nervosa is characterized by extreme thinness, a lack of menstruation among girls and
women, and extremely disturbed eating behavior. Some people with anorexia lose weight by
dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting.
Many people with anorexia see themselves as overweight. Eating, food and weight control 15
4
become obsessions. A person with anorexia weighs herself or himself repeatedly, and eats only
very small quantities of only certain foods. Some who have anorexia recover with treatment;
others get well but have relapses.
According to some studies, the most common complications that lead to death are cardiac arrest.
20
5 Suicide also can result. Many people with anorexia also have other illnesses, including depression,
anxiety, heart and nerve problems and disturb physical development.
Some research suggests that the use of medications, such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers.
6 Recent studies, however, have suggested that antidepressants may not be effective in preventing
some patients with anorexia. In addition, no medication has shown to be effective during the
critical first phase. Overall, it is unclear if and how medications can help patients conquer 25
anorexia, but research is ongoing.
Different forms of therapy, including individual, group and family-based, can help address the
7 psychological reasons for the illness. Unfortunately, no therapy appears to be effective for
treating adults with anorexia. However, research is showing some promise.
30
8 Bulimia nervosa is characterized by frequent eating unusually large amounts of food and feeling a
lack of control over the eating. This binge-eating is followed by vomiting fasting and/or excessive
exercise. But like people with anorexia, they often fear gaining weight. Usually, bulimic behavior is
done secretly because it is often accompanied by feelings of disgust or shame. Similar to anorexia,
people with bulimia often have other illnesses, such as depression. Many physical conditions 35
result from the illness, including electrolyte imbalances, gastric problems and oral and tooth-
related problems. As with anorexia, a patient may undergo nutritional counseling and therapy.

ACTIVITY 9 : A Beach Outing

I like to go to the beach. Last weekend, my family and I went to Pulau Gajah
beach. We were all excited and happy about the trip. We left the house at 8am and
reached the beach at 1pm.
When we reached the beach, we immediately started to play and swim. We took
many photos while playing and swimming by the sea-side. My parents were busy
preparing lunch. We were all hungry. My mother prepared nasi lemak, noodles and
sandwiches. My father advised us to keep the beach clean.
Suddenly we heard someone shouting Help! Help! Someone is drowning. It
was a small girl. We were shocked. My father is a good swimmer. He jumped into the
water and helped the little girl. She was lucky. My father saved her life. All the others
clapped and cheered for my father. He was like a hero.
The little girls family was glad and thanked my father. We were proud of him.
After that we continued to swim and played ball. The weather was perfect. We also
collected shells. It was a happy day indeed.
Finally it was time to go home. We were sad but we had to leave. We cleaned up
and helped mother to pack. My parents also promised us a trip at the end of the year. We
went home feeling happy.

ACTIVITY 10 : I Am A Hero

It all started when I thought I was a hero. I was watching my favourite show on
television. I never miss Superman every weekend. Superman is my hero. I have always
dreamt of flying and saving people in trouble.
I ran to my mothers room. My mother was busy cooking in the kitchen. So I
decided to look for what I wanted on my own. I needed a long shawl or cloth. I found it
in my mothers cupboard. I took my mothers favourite shawl and tied in around my
neck. I knew she would be angry if she knew. I wanted to look like my hero
Superman. I flapped the shawl around. I was enjoying myself being my hero.
Then I decided to stand on my dinner table. I imagined myself as Superman I
felt like Superman! I put my hands up in the air like Superman and decided to jump
from the table. I wanted to fly but I landed on the floor with a broken ankle. I shouted
loudly.
My mother came running to me. She was angry and in tears. She was angry
because her favourite shawl was torn. She then rushed me to the hospital. I stayed in the
hospital for a few days. My friends visited me. Some of my friends brought me gifts but
some of them laughed at me. I regretted a lot but I was happy.

Content First, the Internet (is / are) fast and reliable. We (can, cannot) get information as
soon as possible. This is because it (is / are) cheap. Nowadays, we (can, cannot) surf
the Net on smart mobile phone and tablet apart from using personal computer and
laptop.
Second, it (is / are) very convenient for us to get any information we want
because there (is / are) vast information on the Net. For example, free entertainment on
The Net. You (can / cannot) download the music video and songs online for free.
Besides, you (can, cannot) pay bills on-line anytime as you wish. You (can,

quick.
But, we (may / may not) get wrong information on-line as it is hard for us to
determine which one is genuine. We (may / may not) get cheated easily without
checking in details.
Therefore, there (is / are) great possibility of facing virus threats on-line. For
example, virus (may, may not) attack the laptop if we open and read unknown e-mail
containing virus. This is because we receive unwanted e-mails.
In conclusion, surfing the Net all day (is / are) unhealthy to us physically and
mentally. This is because there (is / are) no physical exercises. Also, young children
may surf pornography on-line.

FORM 5 : NATURE

Nature By H.D. Carberry

We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields
Magnificently
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
And there is no sound but the swish of water in the gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds
Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun
But best of all there are the days when mango and the logwood blossom
When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey

POEM FORM 5 : ARE YOU STILL PLAYING YOUR FLUTE?

Are You Still Playing Your Flute?

Are you still playing your flute?
When there is hardly time for our love
I am feeling guilty
To be longing for your song
The melody concealed in the slim hollow of the bamboo
Uncovered by the breath of an artist
Composed by his fingers
Blown by the wind
To the depth of my heart
Are you still playing your flute?
In the village so quiet and deserted
Amidst the sick rice field
While here it has become a luxury
To spend time watching the rain
Gazing at the evening rays
Collecting dew drops
Or enjoying the fragrance of flowers

Are you still playing your flute?

The more it disturbs my conscience
to be thinking of you
in the hazard of you
my younger brothers unemployed and desperate
my people disunited by politics
my friend slaughtered mercilessly

FORM 4 : IN THE MIDST OF HARDSHIP

In the Midst of Hardship

At dawn they returned home

their soaky clothes torn
and approached the stove
their limbs marked by scratches
their legs full of wounds
but on their brows
there was not a sign of despair

The whole day and night just passed

they had to brave the horrendous flood
in the water all the time
between bloated carcasses
and tiny chips of tree barks
desperately looking for their sons
albino buffalo that was never found

They were born amidst hardship

and grew up without a sigh or a complaint
now they are in the kitchen, making
jokes while rolling their cigarette leaves

village was cursed by Madhuri who had white blood.
Another example is when the villagers called Awang to prevent disasters in the village. They
believe that the Old Lady is an evil person.
In conclusion, the theme belief in the supernatural is very important. It can be seen in many
parts of the story.
