INTRODUCTION

Most application forms include a request for the names of references and some selection
procedure ask candidates to provide letters of recommendation. Two type of references may
be distinguished.

One is the character references, a potential source of information with respect to general
character and reputation of applicant.

The other is the experience references, which names someone who is presumably willing
and able to speak about the applicants earlier work
.
Two distinctive types of letters of recommendations may be noted -------
Special letters directed to a specific employer with respect to particular applicant and
General to whom it may concern letters, usually carried by applicant and offered as
evidence of his character and experience.

Several limitations on the value of references and letters of recommendations are apparent.
Character references are likely to be selected by the applicant to include only those who will
speak well of him.

Employement references may also be selected as a typical sample , in that they may name
only super visors or foreman known by the applicant to be friendly.some favourable replies
from references and letters of recommendation must be recognized as efforts to get rid of
unsatisfactory employees.
.
Most to whom it may concern letters may be assumed to tell only part of story. The
value and usefulness of recommendation have been reduced by the common tendency to
ask for them but make no use of them. Some firms justify this practice on the ground that
the request in itself impresses candidates with the carefulness of selection. If references are
requested , several general policy guidelines should be accepted, understood , and
implemented:

References should be used ; when they are not , it becomes known and raised questions
about the intergrity of the whole selection program and reasonable consideration for the
time of applicants.

For any important position , references should be consulted on a face to face basis since
they may be reluctant to divulge significant information under other circumstances.

If face to face discussion is impractical , telephone inquiries should be used , rather than
mailed request for information.

In any kind of follow up on references , inquiries should be structured to relate information

to job and career requirements.

Inquiries should seek to discover the why behind whatever impressions are disclosed. Those
who are supplying information may have their own biases and peculiar standards.

efficiently and effectively. Research methodology is a way to
systematically solve the research problem. It may be understood as a
science of studying how research is done scientifically.
