Unit 2: Coming of Age-The Loss of Innocence Length: 90 Minutes Day: 2

Standards: 9.2.1.a. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its
development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and
refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. (CCSS: RL.9-10.2)

Learning Target: I can identify the theme of a text and support it with textual evidence.

Success Criteria: I will write a half-page to a page long paper about the themes in Stand
by Me. I will supply at least 2 pieces of textual evidence per theme.

Assessments: Theme identification exercise: Students will write a half-page to a page


long paper about the themes in Stand by Me. They will supply at least 2 pieces of textual
evidence per theme.

Inquiry Questions: What other themes accompany coming of age? Why does one come
of age? How does one identify theme? What is the purpose of themes? What texts share
common themes?

Differentiation:

Materials: Writing utensils, paper, digital copy of Stand by Me, writers notebooks

Procedures:

o 5 Min: Attendance
o 10 Min: Writers notebook prompt: What is the purpose of theme within a story?
Look back on everything that youve experienced. What is the theme of your life?
Why?.
o 55 Min: Finish Stand by Me
Students will take notes on theme and write down specific examples as the
movie progresses.
o 20 Min: Theme identification exercise: Students will write a half-page to a page
long paper about the themes in Stand by Me. They will supply at least 2 pieces of
textual evidence per theme. This is their ticket-out-the-door and will help me
determine my students understanding of theme. It will also be a way to close the
lesson and apply their observations to practice.
Assessment criteria:
A: Includes 2 themes
o Each theme has at least 2 examples from the text.
B: Includes 2 themes
o Each theme has at least 1 example from the text.
C: Includes 1 theme
o Theme has at least 1 example from the text
D or Below: Theme is not clear
o Little to no textual examples
