violo e contrabaixo, o Airto Moreira, percusso, Heraldo do Monte, viola, e
o Hermeto Paschoal, que tocava piano. O Vandr foi o mecenas do
Quarteto Novo.
nacionalismo musical. O do Vandr era protesto, e a gente uniu as duas
coisas, e acompanhou bastante o Vandr. Ele foi muito importante no
financiamento do Quarteto Novo, porque a gente parou tudo, deixamos
outros trabalhos, pra se dedicar ao grupo. Depois, como Frankstein, a
gente queria botar o nosso criador pra fora (risos). A nica coisa que a
gente deixou ele fazer no Quarteto Novo foi o Ah! no O Ovo, do
Hermeto Pascoal. Ele queria fazer qualquer coisa, a o Hermeto deixou ele
fazer esse grito na msica. (TARELHO, 2004, p. 03)
15
A gente
foi amadurecendo a idia. Tocvamos jazz na noite, e j tnhamos o reflexo
17
sotaque, interpretao, acentos rtmicos diferentes. Foi um marco divisor
da msica brasileira, porque assim a cultura do Nordeste obteve maior
penetrao no Sul do pas.
daquela, remasterizou 100 lbuns significativos, incluindo Quarteto Novo
Atualmente, possvel somente importar o lbum.
Unidos, fazer o trabalho dele l. Cada um tomou sua direo. No que a
gente tenha brigado.
Dominguinhos, Zimbo Trio e Hermeto Pascoal, s voltaria a lanar LPs sob
Cordas Vivas (1983), Cordas Mgicas (1986). Heraldo foi considerado por Joe
Pass como o melhor guitarrista do mundo por ocasio do II Festival de Jazz de
So Paulo (1978).
do Quarteto Novo: Primeiro Disco (1979) e Violo Solo (1997).

24
5
Musical improvisation. Lets define what it is not. It is not the God-given ability to invent
melodies from out of the sky. It does not come from a bolt of lightening, enabling one to be a
monster soloist. It is not a divine gift which only a few of us have because we are special. What
then, is improvisation? It is spontaneous reorganization. Think for a moment of what those two
words mean. To put it in other words the rearrangement of something that already exists. It is
learned in much the same way that a language is because musical improvisation is a language.
We all have the ability to learn the language of improvisation, its simply a matter of proper
direction.
Lets examine what a language is. When we speak, we do not instantly invent the words which
flow from our mouth. They already exist. Likewise, when we solo we use patterns and ideas
which already exist in the language of music.
25
6
Musical improvisation is a language, just as English, French, Spanish and German are
languages. It has to be learned. Sure it can and will eventually feel natural and improvised, but
it first must be learned in the same contrived manner that we learned our own language or in
the same contrived way that we would learn any new language. One word at a time its
pronunciation, spelling, meaning, proper use, etc. It sounds free and easy, but is acquired over
a lifetime. One new lick or idea at a time what it is made of, where to use it and what it
communicates or expresses. To increase our musical vocabulary we learn new licks. We play
them over and over until they are habits until our fingers play them independently of our
conscious mind until we can play them in our sleep, with or without our instruments.
Repetition. Where do we get them from? Copy records, copy friends, copy friends records.
From transcriptions, from other instruments one new word or phrase at a time. Then another
and another. This is the process by which we learn and expand the language of improvisation.
7
Too often the jazz musician gives little thought to playing a composition in a manner that is
stylistically authentic. This does not mean that he needs to imitate or be unoriginal but rather
that he should operate his creativity within the circumscribed stylistic and musical area of the
particular composition. Each composition brings its own set of problems and the success or
failure of the player depends on his ability to solve these problems. Few things are more
disconcerting than hearing a player in a bebop session (changes prevailing) playing in a free
manner. By the same token, one should not rely on change running to realize a tune by
Ornette Coleman. The player should be conscious of the fact that all art is concerned with
problem solving. He must first ascertain the nature of the problem, then set about determining
the best way to solve it.
27
8
As a result of this research, it can be concluded that the nature of jazz improvisation is part
creative (using material made up or composed extemporaneously) and part re-creative
(employing material that has previously been created, woven into the fiber of the improvised
solo). Clearly, the skillful soloist can make use of his or her creative and re-creative
performance in such a way that it is impossible to tell where each is taking place and, as a
result, produces a total performance.
9
Patterns appear in the solos of all jazz artists on record, giving evidence to the fact that they
28
practiced them in much the same way as is being suggested to you. It is also interesting to
note that a given pattern doesnt seem to belong to any one player, rather it is likely to appear
in anyones solo. Sometimes we are able to determine who played the pattern first, but most
often we are not. So patterns are public domain, yet all players favor (by individual choice)
certain of multitude of patterns that are extant, sometimes enabling us to recognize them on
record by their favorite pattern repertoire. Patterns are even more important to our
development as learning players.
10
Licks are short motifs or melodies (sometimes even a quote from some other song) which
are used and re-used by many players. They differ from the pattern in that they are not
structured in a repetitive, digital, symmetrical, or mechanical manner. They instead resemble
melodies, often having the free-flowing rhythms of a melody as well, rather than structured in,
say, a steady stream of eighth-notes, as patterns usually are.
11
Analysis of the large number of solo transcriptions that have been published over the past
two decades as shown that all recorded improvisers make use of a relatively small number of
common phrases, patterns, and melodic and harmonic devices. This is not to say that there are
no other, more creative details in the solos, but the fact remains that about 30-90% of a given
solo will be taken up with phrases, patterns, and melodic and harmonic devices that are
common to all improvisers, which we have come to refer to as the jazz language.
29
12
All classical, pop, rock, folk, and country composers also have many clichs that are used
over and over. In many ways those re-used devices help to create the style by which the music
is known and accepted by its listeners.
30
5 ANLISE MUSICAL
13
Only a minimum of articulations have been put in this book. We feel that jazz, being an aural
art form, is often times best imitated by listening over and over, and then playing the notes the
way you hear it on the record. This might seem like the long way to do it, but experience has
proven reliable. After all, who would object to listening anyway? Listening is what music is all
about.

talvez, inconscientemente. Usado de maneira consciente, o motivo deve produzir unidade,
afinidade, coerncia, lgica, compreensibilidade e fluncia do discurso.
A pura repetio,
1996, p. 35-36)
