Emerging Technologies

Technology is a fast growing process that is currently being

implemented in most facilities. Everyone is aware that education has a lot of

technology that is being used by teachers and faculty worldwide. From

projectors to smart boards there is always new ways of trying to reach and

connect education to the kids. A new technology called IPads is being

implemented and by new I mean hardware that I was not exposed to while

attending high school. They are the new revolution and hold so many

features, but to what point is certain kind of education going to stop being AI

dependent and focus on the intelligence of the kids.

Let us begin by stating that I hold no jealousy towards the kids that are

given the privilege of having an iPad for an entire year, it is the schools

responsibility and curriculum. Of course there are benefits of having the

accessibility of getting an entire library of books in one $400-$800 device,

but are they being used for that reason is what concerns me. The iPad is

really known as a device that is like an iPod (mp3 player with touch screen

made by apple) the actual specs for one of the IPads is 9.50 inches tall by

7.31 inches wide weighing in at 1.44 pounds (Apple). It contains plenty of

apps created by independent as well as 1st party publishers. The reason why

I chose this device was because I volunteered for Boys N Girls Club and all

the kids there received an IPad from Roy Martin Middle School.

Apps like scientific calculators and book apps are very beneficial and

can save a lot of money in the long run. [ITunes U is] an entire course in

one app (Cooper) those apps that contain valuable information, I personally

think there is hardly anything wrong with having all that in school to base

your arguments on, specially scholarly journals. Students should have that

information available and having an iPad or iPod is the only way to get that

app so in that case it is a required device to have. When it comes to writing

an assignment most teachers require printed material only and to those that

cannot afford a computer, if they are given an iPad than it gives everyone an

equal chance to participate in activities and then go to most available

printers and either send the file via email or wifi to print it.

Although a lot of arguments can be made about the iPad being really

good in education, Im still sure that most kids that dont attend college or

high school are not benefitting from them. When I volunteered for the Boys N

Girls Club I had many discussions with the kids that had one and they knew

the routine was we had to do power hour which was an hour of doing

homework and reading right before going to play. It became a hassle trying

to detect who was playing music while who was playing not content flying

species or how the kids call it Angry Birds, it is nothing against them

having fun ,but ever since the iPad came in all the kids want to do is

compare games not eBooks. Also in education most classes are to fulfill all

the students with the core of the subject and then individualized, so The

worry is we're raising a generation of kids in front of screens whose brains

are going to be wired differently of course education has to progress and

technology is a way to do it, but IPads are taking time away. Now of course

the argument is that students are socializing and that is valuable traits in

education, but Some shyer students do not socialize through technology --

they recede into it (Richtel)

In conclusion, technology is great to a certain degree, it provides

information and applications that were not provided before, but having IPads

increases the responsibility the student has to have to protect it from

breaking also to prevent his concentration from breaking as well. The

implementation of IPads is going to help give books to students and expose

them to technology, but to those younger generations is going to be an

unresisting temptation to procrastinate even more than they used to.
