Caraga Region last February 10,

Director Renato Solidum said the
Anao-aon Bridge that connects
Surigao City to other towns was
built on top of the Philippine fault
(Surigao segment) that caused the
recent quake and cut the bridge
into three.

According to Department of Public Works and Highways latest Executive Summary report, the
Anao-aon Bridge has been closed to traffic and no alternate routes identified. Reports said the DPWH has
recommended the reconstruction of the bridge that will cost around P115 million. Meanwhile, the
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) urged local officials of San Francisco,
Surigao del Norte to consult geologists first before reconstructing the bridge

It (Anao-aon Bridge) is very

old. We advise them to increase
the columns. It should be sturdier,
more flexible (in case of) ground
shaking. We have geologists here
to assist them, Phivolcs Director
Renato Solidum said.

As of now, a temporary bridge

made of timber has been installed
to replace it to allow people to
move across it.

And in my point of view as a future civil engineer, it is embarrassing to hear this kind of news. I think an
engineer before engaging in this kind of work must first familiarize himself with guidelines in bridge
dseign so that this instance is prevented. As stated in Design Guidelines, Criteria, and Standards: Volume
5-Bridge Design, the design team shall develop a complete understanding of the site conditions and
constraints for a bridge project prior to commencing the design. This requirement is imposed to ensure
that the developed bridge design is suitable for the site and addresses all site constraints.
