1]ABSTRACT:

Mobile has become a cornerstone of the global economy; use of mobile applications
continues to grow rapidly. The concept of there being an app for everything has only moved
further away from being a joke, and closer towards becoming a reality. Staggering statistics
across various reports indicate that mobile apps, fueled by widespread adoption of mobile
devices, are driving a new decade of opportunities.

127 billion apps were downloaded for free in 2014, and there were over 11 billion
downloads of paid apps. Free app download volume is projected to grow to 253 billion
downloads and paid app download volume is projected to grow to 14.78 billion by 2017.
Global Mobile Apps revenue was $25.84 billion in 20132. Mobile apps are on a path to
reach $70 billion in annual revenue by 2017.
Android dominated the Mobile Device Market with 85% market share as of Q2 2014, and
Google Play worldwide quarterly downloads were about 60% higher than iOS App Store
downloads in Q3 2014.

According to the report, the frequency with which mobile appswere hacked in a way that
produced cloned or repackaged versions. Unfortunately, cloned apps are likely to be more
than just mere harmless copycats. Separate analysis has revealed that over 50% of cloned
apps are malicious and therefore pose serious risks.

2] Introduction to Mobile App Industry:

The apps business has finally come of age and this worldwide success story is now
growing fast. Apps generated an impressive USD 12 billion in full-year 2012, and in total
46 billion apps were downloaded in the year, taking the cumulative all-time total
downloads since the app game began, to 432 billion in 2015 and is expected to grow to 831
billion by 2017 cumulative.
This doubling is forecast to happen again in 2013. Our new forecasts show that 2013 will
see 82 billion apps downloaded worldwide, taking the cumulative total to 165 billion apps
by the end of the year. Revenues are set for space rocket growth too;in 2013 the
worldwide app revenues reached USD 20.4 billion while it is forecasted to reach 45.37
billion USD in 2015 and 67.52 billion USD by 2017.
This is impressive growth. While worldwide the mobile subscriber base is forecast to grow
at a CAGR of 4.8 percent over the period 2012 to 2017, and annual handset shipments
are expected to increase at a CAGR of 6.6 percent over the same time frame, apps
downloads are forecast to grow at 35.9 percent CAGR.

SO WHAT IS DRIVING THIS RAPID GROWTH IN DOWNLOADS?

Smartphone shipments worldwide are expected to reach 823 million this year, in 2013.
Smartphones accounted for around 41 percent of total handset shipments during 2012. This
figure is expected to reach 46 percent during 2013, and more than half of total handset
shipments will be smartphones by 2017. From 680 million smartphones shipped in 2012,
we expect to see 1296 million smartphones shipped in2017, almost double the number.

2.1] Mobile application development

Mobile application development by which application software is developed for handheld

devices, such as personal digital assistants, enterprise digital assistants or mobile phones.
These applications can be pre-installed on phones during manufacturing platforms, or
delivered as web applications using server-side or client-side processing (e.g. JavaScript) to
provide an "application-like" experience within a Web browser.

Application software developers also have to consider a lengthy array of screen sizes,
hardware specifications and configurations because of intense competition in mobile
software and changes within each of the platforms.
Mobile app development has been steadily growing, both in terms of revenues and jobs
created.
An analyst report estimates there are 529,000 direct App Economy jobs within the EU 28
members, 60% of which are mobile app developers.
Mobile User Interface (UI) Design is also essential in the creation of mobile apps. Mobile
UI considers constraints & contexts, screen, input and mobility as outlines for design. The
user is often the focus of interaction with their device, and the interface entails components
of both hardware and software.
User input allows for the users to manipulate a system, and device's output allows the
system to indicate the effects of the users' manipulation.
Mobile UI design constraints include limited attention and form factors, such as a mobile
device's screen size for a user's hand(s). Mobile UI contexts signal cues from user activity,
such as location and scheduling that can be shown from user interactions within a mobile
application. Overall, mobile UI design's goal is primarily for an understandable, user-
friendly interface. The UI of mobile apps should: consider users' limited attention,
minimize keystrokes, and be task-oriented with a minimum set of functions. This
functionality is supported by Mobile enterprise application platforms or Integrated
development environments (IDEs).
Mobile UIs, or front-ends, rely on mobile back-ends to support access to enterprise
systems. The mobile back-end facilitates data routing, security, authentication,
authorization, working off-line, and service orchestration. This functionality is supported
by a mix of middleware components including mobile app servers, Mobile Backend as a
service (MBaaS), and SOA infrastructure.

Front-end development tools are focused on the User Interface(UI) and User
Experience(UX) and provide the following capabilities:

UI design tools
SDKs to access device features
Cross-platform accommodations/support

2.2]Android Operating system:

Android is a mobile operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel and currently
developed by Google. With a user interface based ondirect manipulation, Android is
designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet
computers, with specialized user interfaces for televisions (Android TV), cars (Android
Auto), and wristwatches (Android Wear). The OS uses touch inputs that loosely correspond
to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching to manipulate
on-screen objects, and avirtual keyboard. Despite being primarily designed for touchscreen
input, it also has been used in game consoles, digital cameras, regular PCs and other
electronics.
The Google Play store has had over one million Android applications ("apps") published,
and over 50 billion applications downloaded.
As of 2015, Android has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems.
Google releases androids source code under open source licenses, although most Android
devices ultimately ship with a combination of open source and proprietary software,
including proprietary software developed and licensed by Google.
Android is popular with technology companies which require a ready-made, low-cost and
customizable operating system for high-techdevices.Android's open nature has encouraged
a large community of developers and enthusiasts to use the open-source code as a
foundation for community-driven projects, which add new features for advanced usersor
bring Android to devices, which were officially, released running other operating systems.

2.3] Android software development:
It is the process by which new applications are created for the Android operating system.
Applications are usually developed in Java programming language using the
Android Software Development Kit (SDK), but other development environments are also
available.
As of July 2013, more than one million applications have been developed for Android, with
over 25 billion downloads.A June 2011 research indicated that over 67% of mobile
developers used the platform, at the time of publication. In Q2 2012, around 105 million
units of Android smartphones were shipped which acquires a total share of 68% in overall
smartphones sale till Q2 2012.

The Android software development kit (SDK) includes a comprehensive set of
development tools. These include a debugger, libraries, a handsetemulator based on Quick
Emulator (QEMU), documentation, sample code, and tutorials.
Currently supported development platforms include computers running Linux, Mac
OS X 10.5.8 or later, and Windows XP or later.
As of March 2015, the SDK is not available on Android itself, but the software
development is possible by using specialized Android applications.
Until around the end of 2014, the officially supported Integrated Development
Environment (IDE) was Eclipse.
As of 2015, Android Studio,made by Google and powered by IntelliJ, is the official IDE;
however, developers are free to use others.
Additionally, developers may use any text editor to edit Java and XML files, then
use command line tools to create, build and debug Android applications as well as control
attached Android devices. (e.g., triggering a reboot, installing software package(s)
remotely)
Android applications are packaged in .apk format and stored under /data/app folder on the
Android OS. APK package contains .dex files(compiled byte code files
called Dalvik executables), resource files.
The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a toolkit included in the Android SDK package. It
consists of both client and server-side programs that communicate with one another. The
ADB is typically accessed through the command-line interface, although
numerous graphical user interfaces exist to control ADB.

b) Android NDK:

Sr. No. Basic Info Description

1 Developer(s) Google

2 Initial Release June 2009

3 Written in C and C++

4 Operating System Cross Platform

5 Available in English

6 Type IDE, SDK

Website:developer.android.com/tools/sdk/ndk/index.html

In the Android Native Development Kit(NDK), the libraries written in C, C++ and other
languages can be compiled to ARM, MIPS or x86 native code and installed using the
Android Native Development Kit (NDK).
Complete applications can be compiled and installed using traditional development
tools. However, NDK should not be used solely for developing applications only because
the developer prefers to program in C/C++, as using NDK increases complexity while most
applications would not benefit from using it.
Unlike Java application development based on an IDE such as Eclipse, the NDK is based
on command-line tools and requires invoking them manually to build, deploy and debug
the apps. Several third-party tools allow integrating the NDK into Eclipseand Visual
Studio.

c) Android Open Accessory Development Kit
The Android 3.1 platform introduces Android Open Accessory support, which allows
external USB hardware to interact with an Android-powered device in a special
"accessory" mode.
When an Android-powered device is in accessory mode, the connected accessory acts as
the USB host and the Android-powered device acts as the USB device. Android USB
accessories are specifically designed to attach to Android-powered devices and adhere to a
simple protocol that allows them to detect Android-powered devices that support accessory
mode.

2.3.2] Android Developer Challenge (ADC):

The Android Developer Challenge was a competition to find the most innovative application
for Android.
Google offered prizes totaling 10 million US dollars, distributed between ADC II and I.
ADC I accepted submissions from January 2 to April 14, 2008. The 50 most promising
