SRI NAVADWIP PANJIKA Introduction

As for the welfare of everyone Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhupada has written his Sri Hari-namamrta grammar with the objective of cultivating
Harinam, so in the same way Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur has written Sri Navadwip Panjika according using different names of Visnu for
the months (Masa), fortnights (Paksas), and days (Varam), to cultivate Sri Harinam Kirtan.

According to Navadwip Panjika the year is called "Candra Varsa" cyclic year of the moon, which goes from Krsna Pratipat after the Gaura Purnima
to the next Gaura Pumima, this is a moon cycle of one year Candra Varsa.

These months are similarly divided starting from the Pratipat of Krsna Paksa through to the Purnima, full moon, this period is considered one month.
The months are as follows I/. Visnu, Caitra (March-April) 2/. Madhusudhana, Vaisakha (April-May) 3/. Trivikrama, Jyestha (May-June) 4/. Vamana,
Ashadha (June-July) 5/. Sridhara, Sravan (July-August) 6/. (H)Rishikesh, Bhadrapad (August-September) 7/. Padmanabha, Aswina (September-
October) 8/. Damodar, Kartika (October-November) 9/.Keshava, Mrgasirsa (November-December) 10/. Narayana, Pusya (December-January) II/.
Madhava, Magha (January-February) and 12/. Govinda, Phalguna (February-March), these twelve months are considered to consist as one
Gaurabda. After every two years and eight months there is also another month which is added called Purushottama Adika Masa. This additional
month starts from the sukia pratipat to the Amavasya, some materialistic persons call this month "Malmas" and during this month they refrain from
any works, karmanas. However the pure Vaisnavas respect this month as being a sacred and thus engage in all activities of devotional service during
this month.

The days of the week are also given various names of Visnu, Sarva vasudev is Ravi var (Sunday), Sarva shivasankarshan is Som var (Monday),
Sthanu Pradyumna is Mangal var (Tuesday), Yuta Aniruddha is Budh var (Wednesday), Adikaranadasai is Brhaspati var (Thursday), Nidhi
Garvadasai is Sukra var (Friday), Abboy ksirodaksai is Sani var (Saturday).

The fortnights are also renamed as Pradyumna Krsna the dark fortnight (Krsna Paksa), and Aniruddha Gaur, the light fortnight, (Sukla Paksa).

The names of the tithis according to the names of Visnu are as follows; Pratipat - Brahma, Dwitiya -Sripati, Tritiya - Visnu, Caturthi - Kapil,
Pancami - Sridhar, Sasthi - Prabhu, Saptami - Damodar, Astami - Hrishikesha, Navami - Govinda, Dasami - Madhusudhana, Ekadasi - Yudhar,
Dwadasi - Gadi, Trayodasi - Sankhi, Caturdasi - Padmi, Purnima and Amavasya - Chakri.

In the Visnudharmattar and Haiasirsha Pancaratra the following names for the sojourn of the sun is named respectively as Balabhadra when the sun
is in its northern course or Uttarayana, and Krsna when it is in its Daksinayana or southern course.

The names of the seasons or Rtus are; Vasant (Spring) Madhava, Grisma (Summer) Pundarikaksa, Varsa ( ) Vogasai, Sarad ( )
Padmanabha, Hemanata ( ) Hrshikesh, Shit (Winter) Devatrivikram.

This Panjika is also designed for use with Upavas, Parva, and Utsava, or fasting, festivals, rites and feasts
according to Vaisnava Smriti Sri Hari Bhakti Vilas.

The directions sanctioned in this Panjika the give reasons for and method as to why devotees fast on certain days such as Ekadasi, Mahadwadasi,
and the appearance and disappearance days of great Vaisnavas, and Gurus. If it is any great Vaisnavas appearance day is followed by Mahdwadasi, it
is the duty of the devotee to fast on the following day the Dwadasi and not on the Ekadasi. However if the appearance day falls on an Ekadasi where
there is no Mahadwadasi following, then the fasting should be done on the Ekadasi and parana on the day of Dwadasi. When there is no
Mahadwadasi in the appearance of Vaisnava auspicious occasions, it has been mentioned in Hari Bhakti Vilas that fasting is carried out on the
Ekadasi whereas the actual worship, Pujas, and offerings of bhoga to Deities of Visnu are to be offered on the Dwadasi. This subject is clearly
understandable when reference is made as an example to Sri Vaman Dwadasi, (as mentioned in the Panjika). Throughout this book the directives of
Sri Hari Bhakti Vilas have been followed. On grasping the teachings of Gaudiya Vaisnavas Acaryas mentioned herein we fast on the holy days of the
appearance day of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Baladeva prabhu, and Sri Nityananda prabhu hinged on the tithi based observance. Accordingly the
requirements are described for the observances in this Panjika. Fortunately, now some other panjikas have statred to following our proceedures.

DETERMINATION FASTING COMPARTMENTS BASED ON THE JUDGEMENT ON PENETRATION AND

OVERLAPPING.
Penetration or overlapping is classified as prepenetration and postpenetration. Prepenetration is again classified as Suryodhayabidhwa (sunrise
penetration); Arundayabidhwa (sunray appearance penetration or bidhwa); and Madhya Ratibidhwa (midnight penetration or bidhwa). Although
midnight penetration has taken its place in the Nimbarka sampradaya, respected pujyapad, Srila Sanatana Goswami in his Hari Bhakti Vilas has
shown in his notes that there is no valid reason for acceptance of that. Amongst the remaining two predhwas, Arunodayabidhwa should be
considered in connection with the Ekadasi fasting compartment (vasar) or Harivasar. Since the first step of Dwadasi is included in the room, or
compartment of Ekadasi, it is also to be considered or defined as Harivasar. Except (beside) Harivasar it is said that on the appearances of God, Hari,
only the sunrise bidhwa and not the sunray bidhwa is to be given up. This is a general principal to abandon impure penetration or overlapping.

According to the opinion of some unwise persons avoidence of bidhwa in all cases means avoidance of Arunodaya bidhwa. That this is completely
incorrect can be proven by the statements of Sri Hari Bhakti Vilas and the directives of Srila Sanatan Goswami regarding the determination of
Janmastami.

It has been explained in 12 shloka, 120 of Sri hari Bhakti Vilas:- atha sampernalaksane biddhalaksanam "That the complete observation is the
most intelligent, and of most importance."

pratipat pravrtaya sarva udayadudayo rave, sampurna eiti vikhataa harivasar vargita
HBV. 12. 315.

"Accordingly on the pratipat there should be sampurna, complete avoidance of the previous tithi, be it Amavasya or Purnima at the time of the
sunrise in this way avoiding Harivasar."

Described in the Skanda Purana that Pratipad tithis are considered complete if it covers six "dandas" from one sunrise to the next sunrise. Even this
is not applicable to Ekadasi. If it stays 2 Muhurthas before sunrise, then Ekadasi is called complete.

Form this it is clear that except Ekadasi, in other tithis if that is, if the previous tithi enters during sunrise, then this one is called bidhwa or
penetrated. As regards to Ekadasi, if Dasami enters during sunray bidhwa, during 2 Muhurthas or 4 dandas = 1 hour and 36 mins' of sunrise, then it
would be considered Arunodaya bidhwa (prebidhwa).

Prebidhwa Nanda (Ekadasi 0 through Sravan nakshatra, has to be rejected. In the same way Janmastami, if Rohini is already connected. We are
requested to abandon due to prebidhwa. (HBV. 6.15.361). In the footnote of the above mentioned verse, Srila Sanatana Goswami has advised very
clearly that IT IS NOT CORRECT to abandon Janmasthami if the penetration by the Saptami comes during the Arunodaya the same way as Ekadasi
is done away with if penetrated by Dasami during Arunodaya. The reason for this is that all other tithis other than Ekadasi are complete if started at
the sunrise, and thus their penetration during sunrise is to be ignored.

It has to be remembered with great care that a tithi without penetration is complete and pure in its self. Its to look at a complete tithi as a penetrated
one. The Gaudiya Vaisnava Acarya Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana prabhu has written about this very clearly in Prameyar Ratnavali 816 Prameya 9th
verse.

Only Ekadasi observation is to be given up in care of Arunodaya; all others including Janmasthami are to be avoided if only penetrated by sunrise
penetration. Sri Srimad Prabhupada 108 Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Thakur, who is the founder of Sri Caitanya and other Mathas has
described in Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya lila 24.337 stanza. "Abandon Ekadasi with Arunodaya bidhwa and other rites with Surjyodaya bidhwa
and observe all other Abidhwa vratas (unpenetrated rites). The former causes sin and the later brings devotion to the Supreme Lord."

There are eight Mahadwadasis, among them (Unmavisnu), Unmilani, Vyanjuli, Trisprisha and Paksavardini these are all called Tithi ghatita, or that
there cause is tithi based. Jaya, Vijaya, Jayanti, and Papanashini these four are caused due to the nakshatra being still active after the Ekadasi touches
the next day (morning).

If any Ekadasi tithi exceed the following morning or Pratakal then the next day is called Unmilani Mahadwadasi. If Ekadasi tithi is not complete and
Dwadasi is extended to the Tryodasi then this is called Vyanjuli Mahadwadasi. If any Ekadasi tithi stretches through Dwadasi night to Tryodasi then
this is called Trisprisha Mahadwadasi (Triple touched). If Ekadasi undergoes some extension and falls on the Amavasya or Purnima then it is called
Paksavardhini Mahdwadasi.

Then we have the nakshatra based observances. If sukla (Gaura) Dwadasi is having as its nakshatra Punarvasu then this is called Jaya Ekadasi. If it
is attached to Sravan nakshatra then it is called Vijaya, attached to Rohini nakshatra it is called Jayanti Ekadasi and attached to Pusya (Pausa)
nakshatra then it is called Papanasini Ekadasi.

If the Tithi or Nakshatra's mean or quality is the whole night then it is full 60 danda. From the beginning of sunrise on Ekadasi to the next sunrise is
64 dandas. If Dwadasi remains up to sunset on the Punarvasu, Rohini and Pusya nakshatras it is automatically then to be called Mahadwadasi. If
Dwadasi continues upto midday with Sravan naskshatra this is to be called Vijay Mahadwadasi.
 TITHIS
Properties of the Lunar Days

1st Lunar Day - pratipat

The presiding deity of the first lunar day in Brahma and is good for all types of auspicious and religious ceremonies.

2nd Lunar Day - dvitiya

Vidhatr rules this lunar day and is good for the laying of foundations for buildings and other things of a permanent
nature.

3rd Lunar Day - tritiya

Visnu is the lord of this day and is good for the cuttings of one's hair and nails and shaving.

4th Lunar Day - caturthi

Yama is lord of the 4th lunar day, which is good for the destruction of one's enemies, the removal of obstacles, and acts
of combat.

5th Lunar Day - pancami

The Moon rules this day, which is favourable for administering medicine, the purging of poisons, and surgery.

6th Lunar Day - sasthi

Karttikeya presides over this day and is favourable for coronations, meeting new friends, festivities, and enjoyment.

7th Lunar Day - saptami

The 7th lunar day is ruled by Indra; one may begin a journey, buy conveyances, and deal with other such things as a
movable nature.

8th Lunar Day - astami

The Vasus rule this day, which is good for taking up arms, building of one's defenses, and fortification.

9th Lunar Day - navami

The Serpent rules this day, with is suitable for killing enemies, acts of destruction, and violence.

10th Lunar Day - dasami

The day is ruled by Dharma and is auspicious for acts of virtue, religious functions, spiritual practices, and other pious
activities.

llth Lunar Day - ekadasi

Rudra rules this day; fasting, devotional activities, and remembrance of the Supreme Lord are very favourable.

12th Lunar Day - dvadasi

The Sun rules this day, which is auspicious for religious ceremonies, the lighting of the sacred fire, and the performance
of one's duties.

13th Lunar Day - trayodasi

The day is ruled by Cupid and is good for forming friendships, sensual pleasures, and festivities.

14th Lunar Day - caturdasi

Kali rules this day suitable for administering poison and calling of elementals and spirits.

15th Lunar Day - amavasya and purnima

The Vasve-devas rule the New Moon suitable for the propitiation of the Manes and austerities.

CONSTELLATIONAL TRANSITS
Whatever activity we begin at a particular moment retains the qualities of relationship with the surroundings of that place and
moment of time. Each moment possesses its own special potency; hence, the importance of starting our enterprises at an auspicious
and favourable moment to ensure a more fruitful and successful outcome to our undertakings. Actually, the beginning of any
important enterprise has its own birth chart, and in this chart one can see the life of that enterprise,

When electing favourable moments for beginning our activities, it is important to place the Moon in a favourable
constellation, sympathetic towards the activity we wish to enact. To know which constellations are especially favourable to
you, it is necessary to first know your Janma Tara or Birth Constellation. This is easily derived from your birth chart made
according to the Sidereal Zodiac. All calculations in Vedic astrology are made according to this zodiac.

MOON'S CONSTELLATIONAL TRANSITS

Rohini, Uttaraphalguni, Uttarasadha, and Uttarabhadrapada are fixed constellations and are favourable for digging wells,
laying foundations or cities, expiatory rituals, planting trees, coronations, buying lands, meritorious deeds, sowing of
seeds, installation of Deities, the building of a temple, or any other activity desirous of a lasting or permanent effect.

Mrgasira, Citra, Anuradha, and Revati are soft or gentle constellations good for fine arts, learning, making friendships,
sensual pleasures, decorations, sexual union, wearing new apparel, marriage, singing and dancing, processions,
auspicious ceremonies, festivities, dealings of agriculture, and journeys.

Asvini, Pusya, and Hasta are light or swift constellations and are good for sports, enjoying items of luxury, starting
industries, skilled labour, medical treatments, starting education, starting journeys, seeing friends, buying and selling, the
performance of spiritual activities, decorations, fine arts, exercise, and for giving or receiving loans.

Ardra, Aslesa, Jyestha, and Mula are dreadful starts and are suitable for success in warfare, invocation of elementals and
other spirits, imprisonment, separations, acts of destruction, and the breaking of alliances with superiors.

Purnavasu, Svati, Sravana, Dhanistha, and Satabhisa are temporary, movable, or quick starts favourable for undertaking
travel, acquiring conveyances, gardening, going on processions, visiting friends, and anything of a temporary nature.

Bharani, Magha, Purvaphalguni, Purvasadha, and Purvabhadrapada are fierce constellations and are suitable for acts of
evil, deceit, and conflict, destruction of enemies, incarceration, poisoning, arson, battle, setting fire, acts of destruction,
ill-repute, and cruelty.
 PANJIKAM
CONSTELLATIONAL RULERSHIP NAKSHATRAS.

When benefic planets are conjoined with or aspect these constellations, all the things ruled over by those constellations
will thrive and prosper; but if afflicted by malefics, the opposite results are to be expected.

I/. The star Asvini rules horses and their dealers and riders, physicians (this star
presides over the celestial physicians, the Asvin Kumaras), merchants, attractive personalities, attendants,
astrologers, and commandants.

2/. Bharani rules those who feed off flesh and blood, cruel men, those men engaged in killing, torture, incarceration,
the low born, cereals, and those devoid of courage and nobility.

3/.Krttika presides over white flowers, qualified brahmanas, those who possess
knowledge of sacred hymns and mantras, sacrificial offerings, grammarians, miners, barbers, potters, holy
men, and astrologers.

4/. Rohini rules over merchants, kings, aristocracy, those who practice the Yogic
processes and perform austerities and vows, cows, bulls, aquatic animals, mountain ranges, farmers, and
men of authority and wealth.

5/. Mrgasira presides over beasts, birds, flowers, fruits, musicians, lovers, clothes and fragrant articles, products of
the sea, gems, the forest and its dwellers, those who drink the nectar of the gods (Soma rasa), and messengers.

6/. Ardra rules over thieves, rogues, cruel and adulterous men, liars, hunters, those who kill or create disorder, cereals,
enchanters and sorcerers as well as those well versed in the art of calling spirits.

7/. Purnavasu rules over merchants, servants, artisans, the famous, the truthful, the generous, the pure and clean, the
attractive, the intelligent, the wealthy, the high- born, and varieties of cereals.

8/. Pusya rules over grains such as wheat, rice, and barley, sugar-cane, forests,
advisers and ministers of kings, fishermen and the like, those that are virtuous and engaged in sacrifices.

9/. Aslesa presides over insects, reptiles, poisoning, robbers, all kinds of physicians, bulbs, roots, herbs, fruits, and
artificial things.

10/. To Magha belongs wealthy people, granaries, mountaineers, and those devoted to one's parents and ancestors,
traders, heroes, carnivorous beings, and women-haters.

II/. Purvaphalguni rules over actors, young women, friendly and amiable persons, musicians, artisans, commodities,
cotton, salt, honey, oil, and boys.

12/. Uttaraphalguni signifies the kind-hearted and those who live purely, those who are modest, charitable, learned,
very wealthy, devoted to their duties, kings, heretics, and fine-corn.

I3/. To Hasta belongs thieves, elephants, those who travel in conveyances, chauffeurs, artists, commodities, cereals,
scholars of the Vedas, traders, and men of prowess.

14/. Citra rules over persons skilled in ornamenting, jewellers, gemologists, painters, writers, singing, perfumery,
mathematicians, weavers, surgeons, and kings corn.

15/. Svati rules cages, birds, beasts, horses, traders, grains that cause excess wind, unsteady friends, feeble
characters, ascetics, and connoisseurs.

16/. Visakha rules trees that bear red blossoms and fruits, sesame, green gram, cotton, black gram, and men devoted
to Indra and Agni.

17/. Anuradha rules over men of prowess, corporate leaders, friends of the virtuous, lovers of assemblies, tourists,
motorists, all honest persons in the world, and all things that grow in the autumn.

18/. To Jyestha belongs battle heroes, influential persons and those noted for pedigree, wealth, fame, thieves, kings
intent on conquest, and commanders.

19/. Mula rules over medicines, physicians, group leaders, those who deal in flowers, roots, and fruits, seeds,
wealthy persons, and those who live only on fruits and roots.

20/. Purvasadha rules over the tender-hearted, navigators, fishermen, aquatics, those who are truthful, pure, and
wealthy, constructors of bridges, those who live near water, and aquatic flowers and fruits.

21/. Uttarasadha rules over warriors, those devoted to God, wrestlers, elephants,
horses, conveyances as well as those who ride them, trees and other immovable things, persons enjoying
pleasures, and men of valour.

22/. To Sravana belongs jugglers, those who are always active, the efficient, the energetic, the righteous, devotees
of Lord Visnu, and the truthful.
23/. Dhanistha rules over men without pride, eunichs, fast friends, men hated by women, charitable persons, the
wealthy, the peaceful and the self-controlled.

24/. Satabhisa rules aquatic products, dealers in fish, boar hunters, washermen, distillers, fowlers, trappers, and
hunters.

25/. Purvabhadrapada rules over thieves, cowherds, murderers, worthless and

despicable people devoid of virtue, the irreligious, and those clever in single combat.

26/. Uttarabhadrapada rules over sacrifices, charity, penance, wealthy persons, recluses, heretics, monarches,
and valuable corn.

27/. Revati rules over aquatic products as well as fruits, flowers, salt, gems, conchshells, pearls, lotus
flowers, perfumes, flowers, traders and sailors.

In these Transits of the Moon a general rule can be applied as follows FIXED (steady)
stars, this is a favourablaiakshatra to perform such things as laying foundations, for
building, careers, relationships, things that you want to be permanent.

SOFT (gentle) stars, favourable for art, dance, music, marital union, ceremonies.
LIGHT (excellent) stars, which give pleasure, sports, giving medicine, starting industries
or travel.

SHARP (harsh) stars,tantric incantations, imprisonment, causing separation of

friends,assasinations.

MOVABLE stars, acquiring vehicles, going on procession, gardening.

DREADFUL (cruel) stars, evil schemes, evil deeds, planting ghosts in people, deceit,
imprisonment, setting fires - arson.

MIXED stars, works of every day, day to day importance.

Krtttika and Visakha are mixed constellations and good for routine duties, one's professional responsibilities, and any
activities of day-to-day importance.
FINDING YOU TARA BALA

The 27 Nakshatras (sometimes called Asterisms, Lunar Mansions, or sub-constellations) are placed into 3 groups taking
up 120 degrees each. The Nakshatras are ruled by the Nava Grahas, or Nine Planets. Below is a chart showing the 3
groups arranged by the Nakshatra's number (the number of all the Nakshatras are listed in the Table of Constellations).
After finding your personal birth constellation, place a number 1 to the right of the horizontal row that contains the
number of your birth constellation;
then put a number 2 in the slot underneath that one and then up to the top again (if necessary) until all the slots are filled
with the numbers 1 through 9. These numbers are your personal Tara Bala, or the groups of three constellations that are
either good or bad for you.

The Three Paryaya's

The 3 vertical rows of 9 Nakshatras are called the three Paryayas. The row that contains your birth star is the first
Paryaya, where the effects of Tara Bala are at full strength. In the next successive second Paryaya (ascending in
numerical order or when going from the 3rd row to the 1st row) the strength of Tara Bala is reduced by half, and in the
3rd Paryaya, because the strength of Tara Bala is so weak, it is more important to pay attention to the nature of the
constellations themselves and to the Candra Bala, or the effects of transits in the signs described in the sections called
Planetary Transits.

EFFECTS OF TARA BALA

1st Tara Bala - Janma
This transit can present some danger to the body is aspected or conjoined with malefic planets while the Moon
is dark and waning. If favourable aspected by benefics while the Moon is bright and waxing, it can enhance ones
natural vitality and self confidence and attract good fortune.

2nd Tara Bala - Sampat

1/. Ekadasi must come in prior to the Arunodaya Viddhi Clh, 12m, before sunrise). If it
begins after that, it is considered impure and is therefore to be observed on the Dwadasi C

fasting is observed on the second day.
