Absenteeism

In accordance with Texas state law, after too many unexcused absences, the school must

notify the parent. A compulsory attendance notification will be sent to the parent if a student has

unexcused absences on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period or three days

or parts of days without an excuse during a four-week period. (Texas Education Agency:

Admission, Transfer, and Attendance) When Miss Tyra notices a pattern of missing school, she

will pull the student aside and talk to the student about the reason for the absences. If the

absences persist, she will send notices home once the student is close to exceeding the maximum

amount of unexcused absences. If the student continues to miss school, Miss Tyra must notify the

administration, and handle it as the administration prefers.

If there is not a district-wide or school-wide absence policy in place regarding make-up

work, Miss Tyras policy will be used. For any student who is absent (excused or unexcused),

they will have two school days to make up any classwork and/or homework done on the days the

student missed. Miss Tyra will always make sure copies of the instructions for the

classwork/homework are posted on the class website, as well as kept in the make-up work

filing cabinet. The student will be able to take a copy straight from the folder, or use the

instructions off the website and work on it at the convenience of the student and return it into the

make-up work turn-in bin that corresponds with the students class period. Miss Tyra will enter

the grade as a zero after the two days has passed.

After School Tutoring

After the first week of school, Miss Tyra will take a poll via exit slips on which tutoring

days students will be able to attend after school. Once Miss Tyra has looked at the preference

students choose, she will send home a note to parents with the schedule that coincides with their

childs preferred days. Miss Tyra will include in this notice that if a child needs tutoring and

cannot make those days or times, that the parent may request a different day. Tutoring will be

held after school until 4:15, but if a child cannot make afternoons, the parent/guardian may make

an appointment with Miss Tyra in the mornings.

If a student falls below an 80 % in the class, they will be required to come to after-school

tutoring. Once the student exceeds 80% in the class, they will not be required to attend tutoring.
Behaviors and Consequences

At the beginning of the school year, after the students perform their skits on the rules in

Miss Tyras class, Miss Tyra will hand out a behavior contract. This contract will incorporate the

students goals and how they plan to reach their goals. Miss Tyra will also ask students to think

about and write down on their contract how they plan to show respect throughout the school

year. Miss Tyra will include a clause that if the student shows disrespect, he or she will begin

respect remediation with Miss Tyra. Behaviors and consequences or rewards will be discussed in

detail on the first day of class and Miss Tyra will continuously remind students as necessary.

Respect remediation is how Miss Tyra will handle any off-task behavior in class, and will

be administered as follows: students who make the choice to break the rules or decide not follow

instructions will be given a verbal reminder the first time. The second time the student continues

with their off-task behavior, Miss Tyra will take the student aside and speak with them privately

about why they are continuing to make the wrong choice. The student will also be instructed to

fill out the think sheet during their five-minute cool-down. Miss Tyra will make sure the student

understands that any more disruptions will not be tolerated from the student. The third time the

student makes a bad choice, Miss Tyra will contact the parent(s) of the student and let them

know of the choices their child made in class that day, as well as send home the think sheet for

the parent to sign and send back with the student to school.

If the student is causing a safety concern for the class, Miss Tyra will follow the

procedures outlined in the student handbook of the school. Miss Tyra will avoid administration

involvement until there is a safety concern.

Notes from Home

Every Monday, Miss Tyra will send home a weekly newsletter that highlights what the

students are doing in class as well as reminders of upcoming school events. On the back of every

newsletter, there will be a talk-back feedback slip. Parents can fill this out and send it back to

school with their child. They can be sent the next day or throughout the week as needed. These

will all be placed in the talk-back feedback bin.

In the front of the classroom, Miss Tyra will have a table that will be home for various

turn-in bins. One of these bins will be labeled talk-back feedback. When students come into

class and prepare for the bell to ring which signals the start of their bell ringer, they will unpack

their backpacks and place any notes from home into the talk-back feedback bin. While students

are completing their bell ringer, Miss Tyra will check the bin for notes and handle the notes as

needed. Parents will know from the syllabus sent home at the beginning of the year, that Miss

Tyra will reply to any notes or emails during planning period time, or after school until 4:15pm.

Miss Tyra will never take more than one school day to return an email or respond to notes placed

in the bin.

Also, on Miss Tyras classroom website, there will be a Contact Me page that includes

Miss Tyras email address and the school phone number. Parents are encouraged to call, email, or

send notes with students to class with any comments or questions they may have regarding their

child.
Rewards

Miss Tyra will implement the RESPECT Rewards. As a class, the students will strive to

spell RESPECT since it coincides with our classroom rules. Students may spell RESPECT by

receiving compliments from other teachers and administrators, being respectful for substitute

teachers, and exhibiting exceptional behavior during assemblies, etc.

When the students spell RESPECT, they may vote as a class between a popcorn party,

extra ten minutes at recess, or three bonus points on their six-week exam. Every time the class

spells RESPECT, they will start over and strive to spell it as many times as they can throughout

the school year. Miss Tyra will keep each periods spelling of RESPECT displayed in various

places in the classroom so all periods can see each others progress.
Work Requirements

During class, Miss Tyra will provide plenty of time for students to finish classwork. Most

work students do will be done cooperatively in the structures Miss Tyra chooses. However,

sometimes students will be asked to work independently. Miss Tyra will expect integrity amongst

all students to do their own work when instructed to work independently.

All work that is done in Google Classroom will need to be shared with Miss Tyra for her

to view it. Miss Tyra will continuously remind students how to do this so students do not miss a

deadline in Google Classroom. Classwork that is not done on the computer will be placed in the

bin that corresponds with the students class period. Miss Tyra will tell the students when it is

time to turn in classwork.

Miss Tyra expects all students to turn in work on time. Miss Tyra will accept late

assignments. However, each day an assignment is late, five points will be taken off the final

grade of the assignment.

Transitions
Bathroom Breaks

At the beginning of each six weeks, Miss Tyra will give each student a pass that has 5

tickets for bathroom breaks. The student may use these passes to use the restroom during class.

Once the tickets are used for the six weeks, the student must use the restroom between classes, as

they will not be given more tickets until the six weeks are over. If a student has leftover tickets at

the end of the six weeks, the student may use the tickets as bonus points on their six-week exam.

Each ticket is worth one point.

Beginning of Class

At the beginning of class each day, before the tardy bell rings, students will come in to

the classroom and say hello to two people they have not seen that day. They will place notes

from home in the Talk-Back Feedback bin. Students will then take out their composition

notebooks and a writing utensil. If any pencils need sharpening, they must be done before the

tardy bell rings.

Once the tardy bell rings, Miss Tyra will take a quick attendance to submit to the office

while the students are working on their bell ringer. The helper of the week will stand up and read

students the objective of the day as well as the bell ringer on the board. The students will have

three minutes to complete the bell ringer. The bell ringer will be on the board every single day

along with the date and objective of the day. Miss Tyra will take a quick look at any notes from

home to make sure nothing needs to be immediately addressed and then continue with the lesson

of the day.
Classroom Arrangement

Miss Tyra will move desks around depending on the activity of the day. Some days, we

may not use desks depending on the objective of the day. However, students will know what the

home base arrangement is for Miss Tyras class. Home base arrangement will be desks in a U-

shape. This arrangement allows for open class discussions, where no one is looking at someones

back. It also allows for shoulder partner activities without moving desks. It gives open room in

the front so Miss Tyra can be close to every student at once. Miss Tyra will assign seats by

number- each student will be given a class number that coincides with their textbook and ID on

Quizlet. Number one will be the desk closest to the door, and each number will follow

consecutively with the last desk facing the number one desk.
Classroom Rules

1. Respect yourself.
2. Respect each other.
3. Respect this place.

Miss Tyra chose these rules because they are positively written and they encompass all

thoughts, speech, and actions Miss Tyras class might do as individuals, in groups, and as a

class. On the first day of class, when going over these rules, Miss Tyra will give students ten

minutes, in groups of five, to create a two- minute skit showing what each of these rules

mean to them. The students will act out their skit on the first day.
Getting Students Attention

When Miss Tyra needs the students attention, she will say the magic word of the week.

The magic word of the week will be a vocabulary word we are studying. For example, if Miss

Tyras class is learning the energy cycle of plants, our magic word will be photosynthesis.

When Miss Tyra says photosynthesis, students will stop their conversations and their activity

and listen with eyes and ears at what Miss Tyras directions are. The magic word of the week will

be written on the board next to the genie bottle, and will be talked about every Monday.

Transitions

In Miss Tyras class, we will have many transitions! Miss Tyra does not like doing the

exact same thing over and over, but in general, students will have a signal that Miss Tyra will

give them that initiates transition. Miss Tyra will always give ten seconds for students to move

unless it involves moving desks. If moving desks are a part of the transition, students will have

fifteen seconds. Miss Tyra will always be sure to give explicit instructions on what she wants

students to do, where she wants them to go, and with whom they are grouped. Miss Tyra will call

on students to repeat instructions back so she knows students have been listening and will follow

instructions. Miss Tyras signal word will always be green light when the transition time is

beginning. When the transition time is up, Miss Tyra will say red light.

What to Do When Done with Work
Class Discussions

Class discussions are a vital part of Miss Tyras class. Class discussions will occur for our

bell ringer, after a structure activity, and sometimes during direct instruction. Each desk will have

a red cup and green cup. Miss Tyra will instruct the students to stack the cups. When red is on

top, that means the student is listening. When green is on top, the student has a comment. Miss

Tyra will call on students who have green on top in the order she sees their cup. This will prevent

students from raising their hand and blurting out thoughts. Waiting turns and giving others the

chance to speak is practicing the rule Respect each other.

Collaborative Group Work

Every day, students will have opportunities to work collaboratively in groups. Miss Tyra

will always specify who is in what group and where their home will be for the activity. Miss Tyra

will display the timer on the board so all groups can be aware of the time remaining for the

activity. Each person in the group will pick a job: scribe, researcher, presenter, cheerleader, etc.

These team members all have important roles that the group needs. Therefore, Miss Tyra will

expect all students to participate the entire time of the activity.

The red cups and green cups will be used for groupwork as well. If the group has a

question, they will display the red cup on top. If the group does not have questions or issues, they

will display the green cup. Miss Tyra will walk around throughout the activity and ensure every

student is on task and following the directions given.

Miss Tyra will have four volume levels in her class: Mute, one, two, and three. In

collaborative groups, students will stay at or below a volume two If students get above a two in

collaborative groups, Miss Tyra will use the word of the week to get everyones attention and

remind them of the volume level they must stay at. The second time students get above a two,

Miss Tyra will use the word of the week to get the students attention and lower the voice level to

one. If students continue to get above the assigned voice level, students will be on mute for five

minutes. Miss Tyra will let students know when the five minutes is over. If the volume rises

above the assigned voice level for the fourth time, students will be on mute for the remainder of

the activity.
Cultivating Social Skills

On the second day of class, Miss Tyra will have all desks pushed aside. On the floor, there

will be a piece of tape splitting the room in half. Miss Tyra will write instructions on the board

where the bell ringer always is: Place your personal belongings on the side of the room near the

door. Stand on either side of the tape, whichever side you prefer. Quietly wait for further

instruction from Miss Tyra.

When the tardy bell rings, Miss Tyra will stand at the podium in front of the room and give

the instructions for the activity: Miss Tyra will read a series of statements. After each statement

is read, think if that statement describes you in any way and move to the tape if it does. If the

statement does not describe you, stay quiet and wait for the next statement. If you are on the

tape, take time to look at who is on the tape with you. When the activity is over, We will discuss

anything you learned about each other and how it can help us move forward as a class.

The class will go through this activity for approximately ten minutes. After this activity, the

class will discuss the activity together. What did this activity mean for them? Did they learn new

things about their peers? Did they learn new things about themselves? How might this change

how they treat their peers? What rules should be put in place so that each person is represented in

class and treated fairly?

Throughout the year, whenever there is an issue between students, (bullying, arguing,

gossiping, etc.) Miss Tyra will take the time to remind the class about this activity and how we

should treat each other with respect.

Collaborative group work with different students throughout the year will also be used as

a tool to cultivate social skills of students. Miss Tyra will never push a student to do something
they are afraid of, but will help students set goals to push pass any roadblocks that are keeping

them from fully participating in group activities.

Reading a Textbook

Miss Tyra will implement textbook reading into the curriculum for classroom instruction.

Students will need to understand how to comprehend the information they read to contribute to

class discussion. Miss Tyras class will use graphic organizers to help us organize our thoughts

and break down what we are reading. Miss Tyra will ask for popcorn readers to read aloud. After

every key idea, Miss Tyra will pause reading for a discussion time. Students can fill out their

graphic organizer as we discuss the topics.

Once students have grasped the concept of reading the chapter for understanding, Miss

Tyra will break students into groups and have them read certain parts of the chapter and put

together a group presentation for students to teach to the class. These presentations will be

unique to each group, as no other group will be reading the assigned topic. Therefore, students

will need to grasp key concepts and be able to interpret the material for presentation to the class.
What to Do When Done with Work

If a group or individual is finished early with the classwork or activity that Miss Tyra has

given for the day, the student(s) may read a book quietly at their desk or begin the alternative

assignment Miss Tyra has created for them. If the student(s) are not quietly reading, Miss Tyra

will decide for them that they need to continue with the alternative assignment.

If the finished classwork is in Google classroom, the student(s) should share their

completed work with Miss Tyra to receive a grade. If the classwork was not done on the

computer, the completed work should be placed in the classwork bin corresponding with the

period the student(s) is in unless Miss Tyra gives other instructions.

Student Feedback

Every Friday, Miss Tyra will allot five minutes after the bell ringer for students to look at

their grades entered in the online gradebook. Students will be able to see their participation

grades as well as any classwork or test grades from the week. Students will be able to ask

questions to Miss Tyra about any misunderstandings about their grades as well as talk about any

make-up work. Miss Tyra will always have the gradebook ready for conference Fridays. Parents

will also be able to access this gradebook from home and can look over their childs grades with

them.
New Student Orientation

When Miss Tyra is aware a new student will be joining the class, Miss Tyra will pull

aside a student of the same gender and have him/her become the new student greeter. This

student will be one that follows instructions and has a great attitude in class. Miss Tyra will show

the student greeter where the new student documents are along with the new student checklist so

that during the class day, the greeter can explain the new documents to the new student.

The new student greeter will also walk the new student through the procedures Miss Tyra

has set in place for the class. He or she will show the new student where the turn-in bins are,

when classwork is due, and where the new students desk will be. Miss Tyra will also conference

with the new student to ensure all questions have been answered and all needs are met for the

student to feel comfortable in class.

Miss Tyra will introduce the new student to class when the new student arrives. Miss Tyra

will give the new student the opportunity to share any fun facts with the class if they choose.

Miss Tyra will allow five minutes for all students to high-five or shake hands with the new

student and tell the new student their names. Once the five minutes is up, the new student greeter

will ensure the new student knows where they are sitting as well as where to put their things so

that conjoining with the class will be as seamless as possible.

Home and School Connection

Miss Tyra has a couple of procedures put into place so that the connection between home

and school is strong and virtually unbreakable. Miss Tyra will have a classroom website where

everything that is done in class is posted, from the syllabus to the assignments and important

announcements happening at school. Miss Tyra will upload the weeks agenda every Sunday

night and will update the site throughout the week with any grades and cool school happenings

occurring through the week. Parents will have access to this website seven days a week and can

contact me with any questions through my Contact Me page.

Every Monday, Miss Tyra will send home a newsletter with the students that will also

entail everything happening in class for the week. Parents can also access this online on Miss

Tyras website. This newsletter will always have a talk-back feedback attached to the

newsletter in case there are any questions. The students know to put those papers in the talk-

back feedback bin so that Miss Tyra can handle the question or comment in a timely manner.

Miss Tyra will also be available for parents to drop in class and observe or come by

before or after school. Miss Tyra will have an open-door policy for the parents in case there is

ever an emergency or desire to sit in on class to observe how we learn. Appointments for

observations and meetings must be scheduled in advance.

Technology in the Classroom

Along with the website Miss Tyra will set up for the students and their parents, Miss Tyra

will also have assignments on Google classroom. Google classroom allows student to share work

with Miss Tyra without email or thumb drives. Students will be asked to do research and

vocabulary in Google classroom. If students do not have internet at home, they may come before

class or stay after to complete their assignments on the chrome books if necessary.

Miss Tyra will also use the tablet during educational games so that she does not have to

stay at the desk where the desktop computer is, but instead power walk throughout the room to

insure students are on-task. Miss Tyra will submit for a grant through the school board to get this

tablet because of the convenience of being able to control the computer from around the room.

Students will also enjoy this tablet as it can be used for hands-on learning activities.
The Angry Student

Miss Tyra will know which students are prone to outburst and anger management issues.

Miss Tyra will take those students aside and talk with them about what they would like to do

when they feel angry. Miss Tyra will plan with the student their safe place to go and cool down.

Miss Tyra and that student will also agree on a time limit so the student can come back to class

ready to dive in to work. Miss Tyra and this student will also have a special signal in case the

student does not feel like talking. When the student is walking toward class, they can give Miss

Tyra the signal and Miss Tyra will give them space for the time agreed upon during the

conference.

If a student has an outburst in Miss Tyras class but is not jeopardizing the safety of all

students, Miss Tyra will show compassion and the desire to understand the reason for outburst.

Miss Tyra will never yell or send the student away, but instead try to work with the student and

encourage cooperative learning behavior. Miss Tyra will always offer the counselors services if

the student desires it, but will encourage the student to stay in class and be an essential part of

their group.
Substitute Teacher Handbook

If Miss Tyra cannot attend school, Miss Tyra will always keep a prepared substitute

handbook for any person that may substitute in her classroom. In this substitute handbook, Miss

Tyra will include a welcome letter that thanks the teacher for subbing in her classroom. In this

letter, Miss Tyra will also remind the substitute teacher that the students know what to do, but

that included in the handbook is the lesson plan for the day along with the schedule, classroom

procedures and information about students. The letter will also name students helpers for each

period who can show the substitute where things are, or explain any procedures that are not

understood to the substitute.

Miss Tyra will include a detailed lesson plan for the day. The substitute should follow the

lesson plan as closely as possible. Along with the lesson plan, there will be instructions on where

to get materials for each activity as well as instructions for students who finish assignments and

activities early. If Miss Tyra cannot prepare the class the day before the substitute, Miss Tyra will

ask that the substitute write the objective(s) on the board as well as the bell ringer. Miss Tyra will

also leave computer information for the substitute to access any videos or online games for the

day.

In the substitute handbook, Miss Tyra will leave a copy of the classroom rules as well as

the procedures in case students are defiant. Miss Tyra will mention that students are trying to

spell RESPECT, but any misbehavior will forfeit them a letter. Miss Tyra will also leave her own

contact information in the event of a question or concern that cannot wait. The handbook will

also include scratch paper for the substitute to write notes regarding student behavior and lesson

information for when Miss Tyra returns.
