Dancing Building is the life size form of dancing couples which can clearly stands
out amongst the close and compact street. This creative and unconventional building
has faced many criticisms for its unique design as the concept of dancing couple for
architectural structure doesnt belong to Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau, either of this
art form which has mainly been the pride of Prague for long time. Instead of those it
belonged to the style of Deconstructivism owing to its unusual features. It was designed
by the collaboration of Czech-Croatian architect Vlado Milunic and Canadian-American
architect Frank Gehry. Located in Ranovo nbe 1981/80, Praha city centre of
Prague, the location holds a major historical significance due to U.S bombings of 1945
which destroyed the whole place. The earlier name of the building was Fred and Ginger
(famous dancer Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers) as given by Gehry but changed out of
the fear of increasing American Hollywood culture of Prague. In current times the official
name of Dancing Building is Raisin Building.
The Dancing Building is designed in the form of woman and man dancing
(Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair). The construction has done by the 99 concrete panels
with different shapes and sizes. There is a large twisted structure at the top known as
Medusa. The eighteenth and nineteenth floor contains two central bodies. The first
central body is a tower of glass which is supported by curved pillars. The second central
body consists of moldings which are constructed in wavy motion spans through out the
window. The literal frame seems like metaphorical frame over the building. This
unconventional design has won many accolades so much so that it features in Czech
koruna gold coin issued by Czech National Bank.
