Studio #1: Literacy of Self, Three Ways

Part 1.

1. What is the first book or story you recall someone reading to you? What was the
circumstance? For example, maybe the memory is about Mom reading you the Sunday morning
comics while you both sat in bed, under the covers and stayed warm. Maybe it was your brother,
reading you a comic book while you were in the hospital after surgery. Read the prompt and
close your eyes and think about it, seriously think. The first recollection of someone reading a story
to me was when my mother would read the book Curious George to me and my younger brother every
night before we would go to bed. Since me and younger brother shared bunk beds when we were younger,
my mother would sit at the bedside and read Curious George while we eagerly listened to see what
happened next in the book. Ill never forget all of the trouble that Curious George got himself into.

2. Again, here is a prompt read it, close your eyes and think about what the response should
be. What is the first thing you remember reading on your own, either to yourself or to someone
else? Tell me what it was and how you felt. The first thing I recall leading individual was The
Adventures of Captain Underpants. With this being the first book I read on my own, I felt a sense of pride
being able to finally read a full book from front to cover on my own. Not only that, but I was always
thrilled to open up my book each night and see what was going to happen next in the story.

3. What was the last book you were assigned to read in high school? What was it, and what was
your reaction? The last book I was assigned to read in high school was called Frankenstein. My reaction
towards this book was confusion and I was somewhat uninterested in the book because it was something
that was hard to understand and wasnt an enjoyable book to read.

4. What is your earliest memory of being in the car and hearing a song on the radio (or whatever
your parents listened to as they drove around)? What was playing? What do you remember
about the overall experience of being in the car did you always sit in the back, with music
playing, or news, or sermons? Was there a common experience? If there wasnt media playing,
maybe it was a CD or DVD playing, or maybe only people talking. Tell me about your earliest
experience in the car, and how frequent the experience was. My earliest recollection of being in a car was
when I was very young due to the annual family gathering that takes place in Lake Eerie. Since I have
been 4 years old, everyone from my Mothers side of her family gathers for a summer vacation on Middle
Bass Island, Lake Eerie. With a family of six, we constantly drove everywhere and this was one of the
earliest trips I can remember being in the car. Me and my younger brother were always in the back seats
of the car, and my Father would always play classic rock during the road trips. My favorite song my
Father used to play in the car that has stuck with me today is Hotel California by the Eagles. The common
experience was sitting in the back seat of a packed car listening to classic rock with my three siblings and
parents.

5. What was the first music piece you bought (or otherwise procured) for yourself? What was
it? Why? What do you recall about it most? The first music piece I bought was a song called
Daughters by John Mayer. The reason I bought this piece of music was because John Mayer was one of
my Mothers favorite singers and the day I bought it, I brought it back to my house and immediately put it
in the CD player. What I recall most about this piece of music was how happy my mom was when she
heard this song coming from the old CD player we had in the kitchen.

6. What was your favorite television show, going as far back as you can recall? Why did you
like it? Would you still watch it now? (Maybe you watch it as a guilty pleasure, in secret.) The
first television show I can recall watching has to be Blues Clues. The reason I liked this show was
because it was so interactive asking you to point things out on the screen or asking small questions for
young kids to answer. Looking back and reflecting on this show, I probably wouldnt watch this show
anymore due to the fact that its so old and its a show for very young children.

7. What is the earliest experience you have with a parent (or grandparent or other) trying to
teach you an activity? Who was it? What was the activity? How successful was the teaching
attempt? I know for certain a friend was taught to shoot by his father, but he was taught how to
shoot well by his grandfather and uncle. The earliest experience I have with a parent trying to teach
me an activity was when my Mother tried to teach me how to play the piano when I was 8 years old.
Unfortunately, this experience didnt turn out the way I had wished it would turn out, but since I was so
young it was hard for me to be interested in learning how to play. Although my Mother was unable to
teach me at a young age how to play the piano, I have now taught myself how to play and currently have
three pianos at my house in Mooresville.

8. What was the first time you tried to teach someone else to perform a task? Who was it?
What was the task? How smoothly did the experience go? The first time I tried to actually teach
someone else how to perform a task was when I tried to teach my younger brother how to do simple
multiplication. Since I was a year older then him, I had learned multiplication a year before him, therefore
when it came to the time that he needed to learn how to do it I tried to teach him. This experience didnt
turn out as smoothly as I had wished, but that was probably due to the fact that I was probably in 3 rd grade
trying to teach my 2nd grade brother how to do multiplication.

9. What do you recall as the first major failure you experienced? What were you doing? What
was the circumstance? What did you take away from the experience how did it change you, if
at all? The first major failure I experienced as a child was when I tried to learn how to ride a dirt bike.
My Father had taken my younger brother and I to his friends cabin in Eastern Pennsylvania and his friend
had a small dirt bike for younger kids. After seeing my younger brother quickly learn how to ride the dirt
bike, I was determined to learn how to hop on the dirt bike and drive off shifting from first to fourth gear
and learning all the key components. After numerous falls and what felt like endless tries I finally gave
up. What I gained from this experience was a mindset of never giving up and trying until I succeed.

10. What do you recall as your first major success? What were you doing? What was the
circumstance? What did you take away from the experience how did it change you, if at all?
The first major success I recall was learning how to Ski. When my parents decided to take me and my
siblings to Christmas Mountain in Wisconsin, they decided that it would probably be a good idea to get us
skiing lessons due to the fact that this was our first time trying to ski. After spending three hours with an
instructor learning how to ski, I felt as if I were a professional skier by the end of the trip. What I gained
from this experience was learning that help is a key component in learning new things and without help
learning new things can be difficult.

11. Go back to any previous response. Tell me that story in one to two (1 - 2) paragraphs, even a
third if you need to. Amuse me. Treat it as if you are telling your response as an actual story to
another person, to let them know about an event in your life. You dont have to do dialogue style
for this miniature narrative.

The first major success that I feel is one of the most crucial learning points in my life was when I
first learned how to ski. My parents decided to take me and my three siblings to Christmas Mountain,
which is a mountain located in the Wisconsin Dells. Upon arrival, my parents thought that it would be
best if me and my three siblings took part in skiing lessons which would last three hours, in which a ski
instructor would take time to teach us how to ski. After what felt like forever, me and my siblings all
skied off feeling like we were all professional skiers in the XGames. Throughout the rest of the trip, my
family and I spent all day on the mountains skiing through different trails and perfecting our new craft.
Towards the end of the trip, we all left with smiles on our face and a dream of returning to the
mountain to take part in another ski trip. This was a major success in my perspective because it taught me
that in order to learn specific things such as skiing, I will have to look to other individuals for help in
order to learn how to do a task such as skiing. Now my family and I take annual ski trips around the US in
which we spend time together on the mountain and are still perfecting our craft on the slopes. Our most
recent trip was to Park City, Utah where me and my brother decided to transition to snowboarding.
Throughout out Park City trip, we spent endless amounts of time on the mountain due to being on
mountains that feel like they go on forever. By the end of this most recent trip, my brother and I left with
bumps and bruises due to transitioning to snowboarding on one of the hardest mountains weve been on,
but it was also another vital learning point in my life and I wouldnt change it for the world.

Part 2:

1. List ten (10) things you know how to do and do well.

1) Play the piano
2) Snowboard
3) Wake surf
4) Soccer
5) Golf
6) Film and Photography
7) Edit film and edit photos
8) Binge watch TV series
9) Shoot Skeet
10) Fish

2. Explain why you consider each something you know how to do well.
Reflecting on the ten things that I consider being good at and being able to execute well, I believe that
each thing on that list is a reflection of dedicated time and hard work. Learning the piano took endless
hours of watching videos and messing around with the keys to get the correct notes and perfect rhythm
for a song. When it comes to snowboarding and wake surfing, it just comes down to spending as much
time during those seasons as I can to perfect those crafts. For soccer, I grew up playing soccer since I was
10 years old and have spent endless amounts of time and practice to fully grow as a soccer player. Living
next to a golf course gave me the perfect opportunity to constantly hit shots in the driving range, as well
as get out on the course and actually practice. Film and photography requires lots of time and patience in
terms of getting the perfect video or perfect shot, and when it comes to editing it really just comes down
to devoting hours to just sitting there reviewing footage or pictures. Binge watching TV series is pretty
self-explanatory, but I basically have just mastered sitting down and watching numerous episodes in one
sitting. Growing up my dad would always take me and my brothers to go shoot skeet and as I look back
on it now, endless shooting has allowed me to perfect my craft and grow as a shooter. Along with living
near a golf course, I also live on a lake which has allowed me to learn different techniques and rules for
fishing such as knowing different spots to fish and what kind of lures or bait to use.

3. State one kind of literacy you would like to know how to do, and why. You want be digitally
literate in web-design? You want to be culinarily literate in making desserts? You want to be
automotively literate to be able to change tires and do basic maintenance? Be gardening literate
to grow exotic plants? Be canine literate before you get a first malamute puppy? Be language
literate enough in ASL to sign with your new neighbor? One kind of literacy I would like to know
how to do is be digitally literate, due to my interest in electronics and being creative when it comes to
electronics as well. Being digitally literate would be a perfect opportunity for me to grow and apply these
digital techniques to my future major in marketing.

4. What is the first place you would go to find out about this new literacy? Why? Be specific,
please. The first place I would go to find out about this new literacy is google because of the wide variety
of information they provide to individuals for usage. Google is a place for individuals to search whatever
they want and use that information to the best of their ability to grow and teach themselves how to
become better at that task. With endless amounts of information on google, I have been able to teach
myself how to play the piano, how to edit film, and create music, I believe this is the perfect place to look
for information on this literacy first.

5. What is the second place you would go to find out about this new literacy? Why? Please be
specific. The second place I would go to find out about this new literacy is a professional in this field of
literacy. I would look for individuals that have a background in this field and knows how to operate
digital networks and other digital items. I believe this is the second best place to look due to the fact that
an individual with a digital background can aid in assisting you and teaching you actual techniques on
how to grow in the digital literacy field.

6. Give a reason as to why this is a form of literacy others should also be open to learning.
I believe this is a form of literacy that others should also be open to learning about because the digital
world is improving and creating new electronics, therefore our generation has to continue adjusting to
these improvements.

7. State how this form of literacy is going to benefit you in the future. Tell if it will also benefit
others, and how. This form of literacy will not only benefit me in numerous ways, but others as well in
terms of being up to date with new forms of electronics and being digitally aware of whats going on
around the world. This is going to benefit me in terms of applying digital techniques to marketing and
hopefully creating digital content for different business someday.

8. Sell it to me: in a couple or three sentences, make the case for this being THE new literacy for
people to know, as if you were promoting it among people at an interest fair. Mountaineering
literacy is the greatest adventure to be expert in, because... Again, sell it to me. Sell it to the
world. Sell it to yourself. But, sell it. Digital literacy is the new literacy and will only improve all
individuals and keep them up to date with all electronics and up to date with the digital world. As digital
media, marketing, and digital literacy enhances and improves, individuals will need to keep up with the
enhancements, therefore learning this literacy now and improving on it in the future will be vital. Digital
literacy is the new most important literacy and will assist individuals in remaining on top of the digital
world.

Studio One Reflection

Write a two paragraph reflection. Do so by contemplating the three-part studio youve

completed:

Reflecting on this three-part studio, I thought that each activity allowed me to fully open my mind
to the possibility of learning new literacies and sharing information about my background. This was a
perfect opportunity to reflect on my childhood and some of the best memories I have as a child, and being
able to write about these memories was something that was extremely meaningful to me. My favorite
activity from this studio was talking about my earliest memory of being in a car because the trip to Lake
Eerie is something that has taken place for more than 15 years and it is something that has vast amounts
of meaning to me and my family. Not only was it my first recollection of being in a car, but it was also
one of the last few memories I have of being with my grandmother before she passed away, so this is
something that has lots of meaning to me. The hardest task to recall and write about was my biggest
failure because it is something that doesnt come to mind immediately but it is something that taught me
never to give up.
This studio was something that I enjoyed constructing and being able to write about memorable
events in my life that have large amounts of meaning to me. The most enjoyable components of this
studio were the ones I was able to reflect on my childhood and recall moments in my life that I havent
thought about in a very long time. This activity was extremely helpful in grasping notions of
contemporary literacy and its terminology, because it displayed the vast amounts of literacies that are
available and how valuable they can be to specific individuals. The one thing I would like to state about
this studio is that is was vital in terms of fully understanding what literacy I would like to gather further
information on and discovering some of
the most important events in my life.
