How can we establish proper learning skills and habits to prepare students
to function in a dynamic society?
Metacognition and Experiential
Learning as learners (Ex: Not a just historian because you are in history)
We do this by modeling and explicitly instructing kids on how to question and
situate themselves into the conclusions they produce and then take this a step
further to be able to see problems from several different perspectives.
This means, students will need to taught how to reflect and have the
opportunity to do so in a classroom.
Time must be provided where the content can be applied in a personal experience.
It is much easier to learn if you have an actual understanding of yourself and your
preferred personal thought processes.
If students understand themselves better and can verbalize how they reach
conclusions and point to the evidence they used, teachers will be able to better
assist them. All learning can be improved by a students ability to recognize the
concepts, people, and ideas that have influenced them. As they are taught to reflect
and understand these things, they will be able to be better directed to the
importance of what they are learning in different subjects.
Teachers will be able to make better personal connections for students as
students become more adept at developing a discourse around their metacognition.
Learning like every task has natural and learned tendencies we must understand for
it to be effective. Much of the present paradigm focuses on learning through telling,
showing, or some combination of the two. Allowing students to grow and actively
monitor their personal learner profile, they will be able to better see how to engage
in learning and have a strong baseline to monitor their own progress, change, and
growth. Too frequently we struggle to help students learn because we are locked in
our own paradigm and the student is being asked to join us in our personal model.
The more natural progression is to have the students create, monitor, and share
their own model with their teacher. This will help teachers to better differentiate
lessons as students can assist with feedback and teachers will have a larger data
pool to draw upon.
Create an analysis of the status quo or the structures that have been
created the current model that needs changing-
Learning is being developed from the outside- they are being told how to
learn, not provided the opportunity to do so.
