Police Brutality vs. Safety

My survey Scientific Evidence

I surveyed people from 13-80 and these are the questions I asked:

1. How old are you?

2. Do you think police officers have a dangerous job?

3. Do you think that police officers abuse their power?

4. Do you know any cases about police brutality?

5.Do you feel respect towards police officer?

6.What is your race?

7.What gender are you?

8.Do you think you can forgive someone for causing physical harm towards you?

9.Do you think riots are necessary and effective?

10. What would you do if you seen a police officer was using excessive force on

someone?

11. If a riot broke out what would you be afraid of?

12. Do you think that our society is truly equal when it comes to your skin color?

13. Do you think officer should be forced to have body cameras?

The survey is still going on so I don't have the results to share, At this point in time. I will

uses the information from them to prove points throughout my essay and demonstrate

how our area views police brutality and the safety.

Tsiaperas, T. (2017, January 11). Police officers fear more for their safety, see spike in racial

tensions, Pew study says. Dallas Morning News, The (TX). From

About 86 percent of officers say their jobs are harder now because of the protests, and

about 70 percent of Americans believe policing has become more dangerous in the past

five years. This shows how the riots and the way people look at them change when

something bad happens. The fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., in

August 2014 sparked riots, and demonstrators have protested the chokehold death of Eric

Garner in New York, the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, and,

most recently, the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in

Minnesota. These are also more recent events that have happened after Rodney king. I

will use a lot of information from this article because it has so many statistics that show

what is happening and how it has effect the police world. This will show that this is

effecting how officers think and making them scared to do there job because they will be

afraid to offend someone because of their skin color.

B. (2015, June 23). Rodney King. Retrieved February 26, 2017, from

http://www.biography.com/people/rodney-king-9542141#synopsis

It shows who Rodney King is, which he is uses in the next citation. It explain what

happen to him and why. This is an example of police officers abusing their power, AKA

police brutality. This happened in 1991. Rodney died in his swimming pool mysteriously,

but no evidence of foul play. I will use this source as to go more in depth about Rodney

King. He was an important part about the awareness of racism and police brutality. I will

use him as an example over police brutality.

CHANEY, C., & ROBERTSON, R. V. (2014). "Can We All Get Along?" Blacks' Historical and

Contemporary (In) Justice With Law Enforcement. Western Journal Of Black Studies,

38(2), 108-122.

This is a peer-review journal. This goes on about Rodney King and what the author feels

about

the subject. It says that Rodney changed how people perceived police brutality. It talks

about

the CRT(Critical Race Theory) and CDA(Critical Discourse Analysis). I will use this

review

just like the biography.com, honestly I'm going to combine them to make a whole

paragraph just

over Rodney king and his influence over police and riots. This plays into my topic

perfectly.

Chaney, C., & Robertson, R. (2013). Racism and Police Brutality in America. Journal Of African

American Studies, 17(4), 480-505. doi:10.1007/s12111-013-9246-5

This is another peer-review from the same guy talking about Rodney and how he has

changed america. He discusses statistics from NPMSRP (National Police Misconduct

Statistic and Reporting Project) Which was created because of Rodney. I will combine

all these Statistic along with my finding to prove that our nation does have a problem but

it is only with society dragging it on.

History.com staff. (2010). Riots erupt in Los Angeles. Retrieved February 26, 2017, from

http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/riots-erupt-in-los-angeles

This is the riot that happened after Rodney was put in jail after being severely beaten by

police officers. It happened when the video of the police beating up Rodney had gotten

out. People became furious. It was after one of the police officers was not guilty in all

counts. People went nuts. The three days of chaos killed 55 people, injured almost 2,000,

led to 7,000 arrests, and caused nearly $1 billion in property damage, including the

burnings of nearly 4,000 buildings. This shows how police brutality led to both police

safety and civilian safety.
