Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC/NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL

CURRICULUM Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs a) use their knowledge of
academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive
development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of
developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They b)
know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic
subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates c) use their own
knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging
curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young
child. NAEYC.2010

Brief Description of Evidence: While in my Fall semester of 2016 during my ECED 243-
Cognitive Curriculum Course, I did an observation on a group of young children to see what
they were interested in. Together we made a web full of questions. Then I had to come up with
an open ended activity that would help the children answer the question they had. As the
children worked on the activity, I then began to document what they were saying and what
their new questions were. By doing so, this helps the children explore stage 1 The sensorimotor
stage of Cognitive Child Development Theory. Finally, I went through all my documentations with
the help of some peers to make my final documentation panel.

Analysis of What I Learned: While working on this project I learned that it is okay if your
activity does not go to plan. You can always fix what went wrong or you can build off of that
activity, but stay positive. Also make sure you have all the tools you need to implement our
activities.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC/NAEYC

Standard: I know that working with children can be hard at times. Somethings may not go
the way you plan and that is okay. You can learn from it by either, fixing what went wrong or
building onto a lesson plan. I have proven my ability to plan and implement activities for
children based on their interests, goals, and strengths. I was able to have conversations while
giving them the help that they needed to answer their question and to help them come up with
more questions. Sending evidence of learning home with parents can help ensure the parents
that I can teach their children. Using the Panel allowed me to show all of my parents what their
child is learning while they are at daycare. By doing so, I am building a relationship of trust with
my families.
