Reflection: A Humanizing Experience

Hello reader, my name is Logan Frey and I believe that UWRT 1104 has not only

expanded my horizons and allowed me to examine literature from a different perspective, but it

has ultimately prepared me for the future. Personally, I would define successful as being able to

enjoy what you do on a daily basis and strive to acquire new information that can allow an

individual to expand their horizons and view objects from a different point of view. With that

being said, I would consider the UWRT 1104 course and the overall semester a success due to

the fact that I have been able to acquire a vast amount of knowledge that I can now apply to

forthcoming courses at UNC Charlotte and circumstances outside of the classroom setting. As a

student in higher education and a fellow member of UWRT 1104, I would consider the

information obtained through taking this course to be vital in terms of learning proper mechanics

regarding literature and allowing oneself to fully immerse themselves in all that literature has to

offer.

Reflecting on the information being taught throughout this course, I have been able

expand my knowledge regarding literature and apply the newly acquired to different assignments

throughout the UWRT 1104 course. In terms of actual information that was obtained throughout

this course, I can state that I have learned proper methods on how to go about analyzing specific

information located in different types of text, how to construct a proper citation page and how to
go about using proper writing mechanics while composing specific writing assignments.

Through specific assignments requiring individuals to read a particular passage or watch a

certain video and answer questions regarding the reading or videos is something that allowed me

personally to learn how to properly analyze a text or video and reflect on what I had observed.

Aside from completing certain assignments in order to learn, I have also learned a vast amount of

information through the valuable detailed information pages provided such as the information

displayed in studio number five, in which we learned about the five paragraph format and a three

paragraph format. Through different learning experiences such as these, I have been able to

acquire useful knowledge that will continue to aid in constructing proper writing assignments

and knowledge that can be used for years to come. In terms of my favorite assignment completed

during the UWRT 1104 course, I would have to select the rights cause assignment as my favorite

due to the sole fact that we got to select a specific research topic and analyze different sources

which was later used to construct an annotated bibliography. Being able to research a topic that I

feel strongly towards provides an opportunity to compose a piece of writing that stands for

something I care about. With that being said, this course has allowed me to attain an abundance

of knowledge through different learning styles which is the reason why this UWRT 1104 course

has been as great as it has.

In terms of the Student Learning Outcomes, I feel as though I have been able to fully

achieve semi-mastery of numerous SLOs due to the vast amount of information taught

throughout the duration of this course. In my opinion, I believe that the critical reflection Student

Learning Outcome was the most frequently used throughout the course. Whether it was reading

The Last Lecture or reading short passages in class, reflecting on the information provided

through the readings was something that became extremely common, therefore providing semi-
mastery of the critical reflection Student Learning Outcome. On the other hand, I believe that the

critical reading Student Learning Outcome was one that was also regularly used in order to

analyze text and select vital information that could later be used to compose a document

concerning a specific topic. An example of the critical reading SLO can be displayed through

recollection of the annotated bibliography, in which individuals were required to find reliable and

trustworthy sources and analyze the information being distributed regarding a specific research

topic. Once a source with dependable information was determined, the individual then had to

analyze the document for specific information to incorporate in the citation of the specific

source, therefore displaying semi-mastery of the critical reading SLO. As I continue to reflect

on the UWRT 1104 course, I continue to incorporate the information obtained throughout the

course and use it to prepare for forthcoming situations such as writing future business papers or

composing a future resume.

As my reflection begins to wind down, the one thing I hope readers learn most about me

through my work is my outlook on life. In my opinion, life is something that will provide

individuals with endless struggles and obstacles, but the ones that keep a smile on their face and

overcome adversity are the ones that will be happiest in life. Like Randy Pausch said, The brick

walls are there for a reason. Theyre not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us

a chance to show how badly we want something, which shows that life will continue to throw

obstacles at individuals and those that fight adversity head on are the same ones with a smile on

their face the next time adversity comes around. My perspective on life is that we are never

going to make it out alive, so why waste the precious time we have alive spreading negativity

when there is so much to be grateful for in life.

With that being said, my hope for the future now that this course has come to an end is

that I can continue to earn an education and apply that education to a career in sports. I have been

fortunate enough to have obtained an internship working with the Carolina Panthers over this

summer, in which I can begin earning knowledge in the sports industry and continue to grow as a

Carolina Panthers employee. Although I have faced numerous obstacles in life, I have remained

optimistic which has ultimately led me to where I am today and I couldnt be more thankful for

the opportunities I have been presented with and the life that I am currently living. As I make my

closing statement in regards to my UWRT 1104 reflection, I leave you readers with this

statement; Never stop chasing your dreams, dont let the brick walls tear you down, fight the

biggest battles with the biggest smile, and live everyday like its your last.
