Annotated Bibliography

My claim for my research paper is culture causes obesity, which is why it is

titled Our Culture is Killing Us. Obesity is a rising epidemic that is just becoming worse

and worse every year. The three reasons behind my claim are parents teachings, unhealthy

advertisements, and the overuse of technology in this generation. My thesis states In this

generation, obesity is becoming a major issue with the individuals culture being a driving

force behind the epidemic because of parents teachings, advertisements, and technology.

"Adult Obesity Facts." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, 01 Sept. 2016. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.

https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html

This source has a lot to do with data that has been collected. It talks about where

obesity is the most common, where it is more serious, why it affects some groups more than

others, and obesity related to socioeconomic status. The different groups will be interesting to

learn about, why are some races more likely to become obese than others?

Adult Obesity Facts published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is

not my favorite source because the facts will be useful but they are not going to take up a lot

of the bulk of my research paper so this will be good for extra facts and fillers.
Clockwork.net. "About Childhood Obesity." Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation, 2016. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.

https://www.healthiergeneration.org

This article caught my eye because right when you open up the page it has four

options for you to choose from. They are, Get Informed, In Your State, Our Approach, and

Wellness Stories. Out of those four options there is some great information. This website is

all about informing about childhood obesity and trying to make a name for it so more people

will try and fix this problem.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a good source for me to use because they are

trying to fight against childhood obesity so they have an endless amount of facts for me to

read and learn about. They are trying to work together to create a nation where the healthy

choice is the easy choice.

Davis, Kathryn L., et al. "A Comparison of the Fitness, Obesity, and Physical Activity Levels

of High School Physical Education Students across Race and Gender." Physical

Educator, vol. 73, no. 1, LateWinter2016, pp. 15-31. EBSCOhost, doi:10.18666/TPE-

2016-V73-Il-5903.

This is a scholarly article titled A comparison of the Fitness, Obesity, and Physical

Activites. I found this article on EBSCOhost. This is written by Kathryn L. Davis. This is

about the physical fitness, obesity, and physical education levels of high school students in

physical education classes when comparing different racial and gender groups.
This article will be very helpful because it compares different groups which I will

have a paragraph about. This will help me to be able to compare and give more reasons and

maybe even solutions to obesity.

Emmitt, Dennis. "Understanding Obesity Perceptions in America." Hospital Topics,

2015. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.

aspxerrorpath=/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer

This article touches on all the important questions anyway would have about obesity.

It talks about the strategies to tackle the obesity epidemic and the obesity among children.

There are also many analyses of data which will be very helpful. One of the most interesting

things that stuck out to me was it says Over the past several years now, there has not been s

single week when there is no mention of obesity-related topic in the U.S. media., which is

very true.

This scholarly article will be one of my most helpful resources because of all of the

facts and data it has, there are multiple charts and statistics for me to look at and compare

with. I also like it touches every topic you can think of when thinking about this obesity

problem in America.

Gibbs, Wyat W. Treatment That Tightens the Belt (2016): n. pag. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.

Treatment That Tightens the Belt is a scholarly article written by Wyat W. Gibbs.

This article explains the epidemic of obesity. Researchers clarify the links between excess fat

and a host of diseases. This article touches on invasive surgery and how well that works or

doesnt work. This source is a persuasive article trying to persuade readers how real this

epidemic is.

The intended audience is those researching the effects of obesity. This illuminates my

research topic because I am showing how big of an impact obesity has on this generation and

also all the extras that come with it, the money, physical, and emotional consequences.

Golden, Neville H., et al. "Preventing Obesity and Eating Disorders in Adolescents."

Pediatrics, vol. 138, no. 3, Sept. 2016, pp. e1-e10. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1542/peds.2016-1649.

This is a scholarly article from EBSCOhost. It is titled Preventing obesity and Eating

Disorders in Adolescents. I will only use this source for the preventing obesity part, because

that is a major point of my essay. This states that the focus should be on a healthy lifestyle

rather than on weight which is very true in my opinion.

The author of this scholarly article is Neville H. Golden. This will help a lot in my

paper and I am looking forward to reading farther into the research that was made. This will

be a very important source.

Hillier, Amy. "Overweight and Obesity in America's Children." The Annals of the American

Academy, 2008. Web. 12 Apr. 2017

http://libproxy.uww.edu:2055/hottopics/lnacademic/?verb=sr&csi=165641&sr
The most important statement in Overweight and Obesity in Americas Children is

that this generation of kids spend too much time inside and not even time participation in

outdoor activities, which causes a dramatic increase in overweight children. This considers

technology and believes that it is a big influence of the built environment, children today

have unprecedented access to technology which is a huge factor because it causes children to

be more sedentary.

The author of this scholarly article is Amy Hillier, who is an assistant professor of city

and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. Her research uses

GIS and spatial statistics to analyze geographic disparities in housing and health. This journal

is perfect for my research paper because technology is also one of my main points.

Isong, Inyang A., et al. "Childcare Attendance and Obesity Risk." Pediatrics, vol. 138, no. 5,

Nov. 2016, pp. 1-7. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1542/peds.2016-1539.

Inyang A. Isong wrote a scholarly article about how several observational studies

have revealed that children who receive nonparental childcare are at increased risk of obesity.

This is relevant to my paper because it is showing another reason how culture causes obesity.

They conducted research and this article gives the results.

I will use this a lot because it gives very good scholarly reasons. The research

they conducted was very interesting to me and I am excited to read more about it.

Taylor, Barry J., et al. "Targeting Sleep, Food, and Activity in Infants for Obesity

Prevention: An RCT." Pediatrics, vol. 139, no. 3, Mar. 2017, pp. 1-11. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1542/peds.2016-2037.
This is a scholarly peer reviewed article and it talks abut ways to prevent obesity from

the young age of infants. It states the few existing early-life obesity prevention initiatives

have concentrated on nutrition and physical activity, with little examination of sleep. This

researches the ways obesity can be stopped before it even starts.

I will use this in my essay because my paper is all about the way obesity can start

from a young age and that is literally the title of this article. This will be very helpful because

it gives different ways to look at the epidemic of obesity.

"Understanding the American Obesity Epidemic." Understanding the American Obesity

Epidemic. American Heart Association, 9 Mar. 2016. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/HealthyLiving/WeightManagement

This article was interesting to me because it brought up the idea that it is not just a

matter of obese people deciding one day to eat less, it is a much bigger problem than that.

The body is not getting the cues. Food consumption is a highly complex biological system, so

what you eat and when can trigger different things. This also explains societies thoughts on

this epidemic.

Something I will use in my research paper is the different point of views this article

has. The different ideas will be very interesting. It also has a segment on obesity: past and

present. Understanding the American Obesity Epidemic published by the American Heart

Association will be large contributor to my paper.

"Why Are Americans Obese?" PublicHealth, 14 Dec. 2016. Web. 12 Apr. 2017.
http://www.publichealth.org/public-awareness/obesity/

This article had something no other source has that I have come across, it had a chart

classifying what people should be based on your body mass index, body fat, height, and

weight. This helps explain to people what is actually means to be overweight. Generally,

doctors and nutritionists classify people as either underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or

obese. This article also explains the different theories many have about obesity and why it is

such a big problem.

The article Obesity in America published by PublicHealth.org is a very reliable

source which will be beneficial to use in my research paper. The chart is also an interesting

topic to add in there because then readers themselves to keep themselves in check.
