The Object of the Preposition

A preposition often begins with a prepositional phrase. A

prepositional phrase consists of two things: a preposition and a
noun, a pronoun, or a gerund. This noun, pronoun, or gerund is
the OBJECT of the preposition.

Here are some examples of prepositional phrases:

1. At the park
At= the preposition
Park= object
o Park is the object of the preposition because it is
a noun. Remember that a noun is a person, place,
or thing.
2. By him
By= the preposition
Him= object
o Him is the object of the preposition because it is
a pronoun. Remember that a pronoun takes the
place or refers to a noun.
3. Without running
Without= the preposition
Running= object
o Running is the object of the preposition because
it is a gerund.
Remember that a gerund is a verb that functions
as a noun.

The sentences below contain prepositional phrases. As a class, we

will work together to identify these prepositional phrases. Please
circle the preposition and underline the object.

1. The dog is located under the bed.

2. Try to look at the sun without sneezing.

3. The bed is below her.

With a partner, circle the prepositions and underline the objects in
the remainder of the sentences.

4. You must listen to the song without dancing.

5. The show will continue after the advertisement.

6. He is near the restaurant.

7. The cat is by him.

8. The movie will start at noon.

9. The race must be completed without running.

10. Robert is very organized, unlike his brother, Tom.
