Chemyth Buster

-Adhesh

Chemistry. The word sends down a shiver through the spines of many.
Chemistry has been seen as a subject stuffed with tiresome chemical formulas
and reactions which makes students twirl their hair and bite their nails. Some
complain it to be a boring subject. .Wait, no more of myths. It is time that I
break this myth with the hammer of reality.
Chemistry is more than just what our eye meets (sees), i.e., formulas and
reactions. It is the science of everything, the science of existence. Let me
disprove the claim of certain that chemistry is just about C + O 2
CO2 and so on.
Have you ever wondered,
Why the sky is blue?
What is universe made up of?
Why do we cry when we cut an onion?
Why does our tongue stick to a frozen rod?
What is the secret behind the old trick of making invisible ink?
(secret)What is the chemistry behind love?
If not, both wonder and google it up.
Youll find that the utility of chemistry ranges from simple everyday products to
complex chemicals and compounds.
Then what makes us think that chemistry is a difficult subject? First, it is due to
the pre-conceived notions regarding the subject. Second, it is due to the
tendency of students to mug up the concepts rather than understanding them.
Learning is complete with understanding of the subject. Understanding sparks
an interest for the subject in us.
Chemistry is a fun subject filled with various exciting experiments and mind-
blowing reactions.
In the earlier paragraph of the article, I had asked a few questions to ponder
upon. I know that people who disbelieved that there is no chemistry in those,
must have googled it up, but for those who are just skimming through this
article, let me explain a few interesting ones to you:
Why do we cry while cutting an onion?
This is due to the presence of sulfur compounds in onion cells which get
released when cut and they react with the moisture in our eyes and cause
burning sensation.
How to make invisible ink?
An invisible ink can be made either by using lime juice or by using Baking
soda + water.
What is the chemistry behind love?
Scientists claim that love is a result of increased level of hormones like
dopamine, norepinephrine racing internally.(or is it due to a cupids arrow
strike?)
Well, you must have seen that chemistry is inevitable part of our life.
I think that I must have reached the end of the page, therefore I curtail this
article to a last line, by quoting a Greek philosopher, Democritus:
We think that there is color, we think there is sweet, we think there is bitter,
but in reality, there are atoms and a void.
