PEGGY

Chapter 1

I was at the neighborhood supermarket one day standing by the tomatoes, and she was
there also. I remember her saying to me (while looking over her glasses at the vegetable,
squeezing it) Im trying to choose a good one And then I said to her yep, girl I know
what you mean while talking briefly about those tomatoes she said Im Peggy, nice to
meet you and I replied Im Kaye, nice to meet you also We laughed a little bit and
wished the one another a good day. I then continued on with my grocery shopping. She
was a very nice woman, friendly and easy going. I didnt really hear a western accent in
her voice as I do when I stop and chat with the people here.
I knew immediately that she had a good spirit, because she reminded me of some of the
folks back home in New Orleans. Her demeanor was very out spoken, bold, direct and
Christian like. She didnt mind at all talking about the Lord, and didnt care if anybody
heard her too. Just like myself. Yep, met a God friend that day and enjoyed the
conversation. Now Im sure I talked about her as time went on throughout the evening,
because she was an interesting character. And if I should see her again, Im sure well talk
some more.
A couple of weeks later, and to my surprise, I saw her again. This time she was working
at that very same store (as a cashier) and I was in her checkout line. I immediately said
out loud while putting my items on the counter I know you; youre the woman I was
talking with over by the tomatoes! How are you doing? and did you ever get the right
tomatoes? She answered with a big smile on her face yes I did too some large juicy
ones And how are you today? Its good to see you again I continued. We chatted as she
added up the prices of the things Im purchasing. Wow look at God! You work here
now, thats amazing How do you like it? I asked. She replied slowly and carefully,
because she was scanning the groceries. well this is just my first week, and it seems to
be going ok Im taking my time and learning as I go along and the folks here are so
nice to me yep, I needed a job and God blessed me with this oneIm grateful she
said.
I shop at this particular store all the time. The food is always fresh and the prices are
good. Its near the house and convenient. Been shopping there twice a week for years,
and know just about everyone that works there, from the deli to produce, from the isles to
checkouts. They are all friendly and are like family to me. When she finished and totaled
everything... I paid her the money and said bye Peggy, see you next time she was
surprised to hear that I remembered her name. Bye Kaye she said right back at me. And
yes, I was also equally surprised that she remembered mine.

Chapter 2

As time went on Peggy and I got to know each other better and became friends. Our
conversations were always about the goodness of God and what He has done for us. We
loved sharing our testimonies and telling stories of the past. You have a good spirit, and
I like that I often said to her. Each time she would laugh and say thanks, I appreciate it
Well the store at that location was moving soon to its new area and all the employees
there were excited about working in the superstore. They began lowering the prices on
everything it all must go everythings on sale... The whole store they gladly said.
And we shopped and shopped and shopped. (I love a good bargain).
Right after the Christmas holiday the new store opened up about a half of a mile down
the street. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! Everything was so bright and so pretty with that new
fresh smell that attracts customers. The place was packed with people on the first day.
Everyone came out and gathered to see the sights. There were lots of customers and it
was a joy. The employees looked very good in the new uniforms, welcoming buyers as
they walked in. The store was fully staffed, and everyone smiled and was happy (it
showed on their faces). But most of them including myself, liked the other much
smaller store a lot better because it was like visiting with family, know what I mean?
Well my friend Peggy liked it plenty. Shes was saying God is a big God and Hes
always doing something big This is His plan and He know what Hes doing Hes
good all the time Yep, everyone who could hear the sound of her voice (and she talks
loud too) knew the this woman is a true born again Christian, and is proud of it. She
ministers to everybody that gets in her checkout line. And everyone just loves her spirit.
She has a knack for making you feel great about yourself. Constantly complimenting
others and giving a kind word of encouragement, just in case you need it. She spreads
sunshine and rainbow throughout the day with her warm smile.
She and I click, theres something special about our friendship. The only thing I could
familiarize it with is like being back home laughing and reminiscing with the folks in my
old neighborhood. I was comfortable talking with her about anything. I recently called
her for the Easter holiday to speak blessings upon her life and that she may enjoy the day.
We didnt talk long on the phone, because I was busy at the time cooking dinner and she
was concerned about not hearing from one of her girlfriends in awhile. Its been a
month, and she havent called or anything she said. Im going to have to go over to her
house and check on her, Kaye I could sense the worry in her voice, and I said yep, go, I
hope shes ok and doing fine We said a prayer for her friend, talked a few minutes more
and then said goodbye.

Chapter 3

The couple of weeks later I was at the superstore shopping again. Im there all the time,
but Peggys not her schedule prohibits. So doing this particular time a couple of weeks
earlier I decided to change my appearance and do something drastic. I dont know; guess
it was just time for something new. I LET DOWN MY HAIR. Yep, stop wearing it styled
in a French twist and/or a French braid and most folks dont recognize me because I
havent done this sort of thing in years. Turning over a new leaf at fifty-six, ha!
Well I am in the store standing by the vegetable isle looking at the bell peppers
(choosing the best ones) and all of a sudden I hear this loud voice saying Kaye, I love
the hair! I looked around and it was Peggy, she was working at the self checkout. I
started walking towards her and she said it again Kaye, I love the hair! We laughed
because we are always happy to see another and I thanked her for such a beautiful
compliment as we greeted with a big hug. Thanks again, I added. Its good to see you
today Your hair is just as lovely, my friend giving the compliment right back at her.
And its true, you see, my new friend Peggy (I dont know her last name) is also like a big
sister to me. Shes sixty-nine years young and is full of joy. Shes energetic and fun to be
around. She looks marvelous darling and theres no stopping her.
I believe that the customers purposely get into her lane (because its always crowed)
just so that they are able to talk with her. The gift of gab we call it and shes got it! She
professes her love for God to everybody and is proud to be a Christian. And I could bet
you anything that God is pleased with her. Maybe thats why she was sent to that
company in the first place. Two shall put ten thousand to flight. Nothings by
happenstance, everythings ordained the bible says so.

I dedicate this little book to my new friend Peggy who has become very dear to me. I
love you spirit!

To all my readers
God bless and prosper,
Kertranka
