What kinds of reading tests might your students do (will they do) in your classroom? When do
they take them? What do your tests look like or will look like? For this part of the performance
project your assignment is to fully design a test based on a basal reader (p. 109).
As my assessment I would like to use standardized test for this book. Following items will be
my ways to use in class to do assessment
2. Explain your choices about the questions you ask, the design you chose, and what you
expect to learn from this assessment.
Using the absolute standard, I will make sure that my students are meeting the absolute stan-
dards. They should be able to achieve the goal that we have for them. If they do good then meet
the preset values. Another way is mastery of learning objective. Following the curriculum and
applying it for the master of learning objective.
Imagine that you are preparing to deliver a reading lesson for a book of your choice and you de-
termine that some of your students require differentiation. That is to say, that you need to differ-
entiate for time, tasks, and texts (p. 127-132). You determined that 75% of your students need
support with meaning-making and 25% of your students need help with teacher-managed code
focus instruction.
3. Design a brief teacher managed/code focused instructional activity for 25% of the stu-
dents that have weak word recognition.
Since this is a student managed/code instructional activity I will first start using phonics
games. There is a website (https://www.education.com/games/phonological-awareness/) for
phonics games. I will just go to this website to help my students with the words. Secondly, after
all the games we will be ready to do some phonics worksheets. With phonic worksheets my stu-
dents will able to show what they have learned.
4. Explain your choices.
My choices for #2 are doing independent reading and partner reading. These two activities are
really important for students especially for emergent students. Students need to be guided by
teachers to be successful. Providing independent reading time will most likely help students to
increase their knowledge and comprehension skills. During independent reading students pay
their full attention to read the text. So learning is being meaningful even some students struggle
with words or anything. When it comes to partner reading, students also learn more with this too.
Partner reading could improve their social skills and language skills because they have a chance
to read the text to each other and talk about the text. Sometimes some students are being shy for
this reason if they have question they do not ask to teacher. However when we do partner reading
they help each other and learn more.
As (future) teachers we strive to provide opportunities for students to develop all dimensions of
language and literacy (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). Use what you have learned in
chapter 6 (p. 152-183) to discuss how you might provide your students:
1. one reading opportunity.
It is really important for emergent readers to have reading opportunities in school because we
are not sure if all of our students are being read anything to them at home. By doing reading, stu-
dents are getting chance to pronounce the vocabularies well. They also learn more with reading.
There are some reading activities for teachers to do;
* Reading aloud: With this activity students are having more chance for reading. They develop
their reading skills and build more vocabularies.
* Reading aloud,
* Peer support
* Grouping.
In all classrooms we do word study instruction regardless of grade level. In the lower grades we
focus on activities like long-vowel patterns, blending, and teaching rimes. As students move to
the upper grades we focus more on word recognition, teaching affixes, and content area vocabu-
lary. For Chapter 7, choose one teaching idea (p. 202-214) and discuss how you might implement
it in your classroom setting.
Word Banks are the one of the well known word recognition strategy that we use most of the
time. Teachers are printing the words on small cards and putting them into a small plastic bags or
containers then give them to students who needs help. It is always suggested that teachers print
the words instead of students because they are emergent learners, they might not know how to
form letters. For word banks, teachers could write the name of the student to one of the card.
Words that already known by that student could be added to bank. Favorite sports name, animals
name, places name, food names, famous people name also could be added to bag. It is really im-
portant that teachers are adding one new word to word baks for each day. When we add words
we need to make sure that students are with us and they help us on choosing it/them. Practicing,
reviewing and seeing the words everyday will help students to continue to recognize new ones.
In my class I everyday repeat the word that we have learned earlier. Students have journals to
keep the words in it and practice them. Since I teach High School Algebra we barely see new
word. However when we have new words they are kind of difficult for students to remember.
Therefore I use word banks with quizlet.com for words review. They have flashcards for each
vocabulary and they have games for each set of vocabularies. I really suggest this website and
word banks for every teachers to help students more.
