Resources:
Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel

In this lesson, we will be introducing the students to a chapter book,

which they will encounter as they increase in their reading levels
towards the culmination of first grade. We will be emphasizing how
to take a sneak peek at the title, cover, blurb, and table of
contents/chapters and how to use that information to think about
what will happen in the book. In addition, students will begin
thinking more in depth about the characters in the book--their
feelings, traits, and how they change over time in the text.

Lesson (15 minutes)

Connection:
Today we are going to read a book called Frog and Toad are
Friends by Arnold Lobel. Some of you may know this book. Lets take a
sneak peek at the cover. What do you see? Do you think this is fiction or
non-fiction? We are already learning so much from just taking a sneak
peek! Lets see if we can find the blurb on the back of the book.
Read the blurb
In the blurb, it says that Frog and Toad always help each other
out as best friends should. What do you think they will do to help each
other?
Lets open up the book to the Contents page. This is a chapter
book and the names of the chapters give us a clue about what the
chapter is about. We are reading Spring (Chapter 1) today.

Teaching:
Start reading on Page 4
On Page 5, think aloud: I wonder what Frogs doing here. I think
hes trying to tell Toad that its Spring! Maybe he is excited for Spring and
wants Toad to be excited too!
Continue reading to Page 11. Think aloud: Wow, Toad has been
sleeping since November and now its April. Isnt that a long time to
sleep? And he still doesnt want to get out of bed. Maybe hes feeling a
little lazy. Hes telling Frog to come back at half-past May. What would
you do if you were Frog? Turn and Talk (Debrief with students after T&T)
Continue onto Page 13. Think aloud: Wow! Frog is tricking Toad!
But why? What ideas do you have about that? Turn and Talk (Debrief with
students after T&T)
Continue onto Page 15. Ask: Remember, the blurb on the back of
the book said that they would always help each other. How did they help
each other in this chapter Spring ?
Something else I want to ask you about is Toad. How did his
character change through the chapter? Turn and Talk

Active Engagement:
Students will be able to practice drawing and writing about the
story. There are two choices: 1) Students can draw and write about how
Toads character changed through the chapter or 2) Students can draw
and write about what Frog did that showed he was a good friend to Toad.
How did Toad change from the beginning to the end of the story?
How did Frog show he was a good friend to Toad?
Remember to give details and examples! Students can also use
sentence starters
Students pick their choice and begin working at their seats
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Independent Practice: (15-20 minutes)

Students will work on the activity of their choice (writing and drawing)
I will circulate as needed
Small group- Vivian, Jia Ying, Tammie
