1.1 Introduction
The purpose of this document is to introduce the Maritime Broadband, C-Bird VSAT system and instruct
customers on how to use the system.
System Hardware The C-Bird system consists of a stabilized antenna coupled with a Below
Deck Unit (BDU) which houses a modem, Antenna Control Unit (ACU),
internal UPS (to protect the equipment from power spikes) and Ethernet
Switch. The stabilized antenna is secured to the deck using a mount. The
antenna is installed on a mount in a location which ensures the best line of
sight to the satellites.
C-Bird User Interface C-Bird has a simple, user friendly, web-based interface for control and
maintenance.
A circle of 3 meter radius must be drawn around the antenna in safety yellow, orange or red to
demarcate the safety zone. To avoid potential safety issues caused by the movement of the antenna
and radiation this safety zone should not be entered when the system is in operation.

3.1 Calibration
3.1 Calibration
3.1.1 AZ Calibration
- Click OK
- Wait 15 seconds and confirm at the bottom of the page that the line AZ motor calibrated appears.
The process can take up to 2 minutes. At the end of the process, the antenna will go to the bird bath position.
Final Calibration:
Determine the front side of the C-Bird. Front side of the C-Bird is where the skin is assembled using
butterfly nuts.
If the general orientation of the C-Bird front is toward the bow, starboard, aft, or port side, click on the
respective radio button then click Final Calibration.
If the general direction is not within 15 degrees from one of the ship sides, then determine the orientation and
type it in the Orientation Value space below the cross. Then check the Orientation Value radio button. Then
click Final Calibration button and wait for the final calibration to finish. After final calibration is complete, the
C-Bird will enter into auto mode automatically.
Full Calibration:
Full calibration automatically performs azimuth motor, elevation motor, and final calibration. Before clicking the

match the four sides choose orientation value and put your value in the blank space.
The manual final calibration function is used for troubleshooting purposes. It is available only when azimuth and
elevation motors are calibrated.
If there is a power failure that lasts more than 5 minutes the C-Bird system will stop operating. Once power is
restored:
1. If a NavGyro is used to convert the ships heading to digital format, please set the NavGyro to the ships
heading (the NavGyro is located in the Indoor Rack).
2. Login to the advanced settings and controls user interface. On the antenna control page click on Auto
Mode
NavGyro
The inherent Block Zone is defined as the heading angle range where the antenna line of sight to the satellite is
blocked due to obstruction from either the vessel or port superstructures. The line of sight is created from the
Electronic axis, 22 below the mechanical axis (as shown below).
When a complete service interruption occurs, vessel personnel should make a visual inspection of the antenna
direction and any source of possible obstruction prior to placing a service call.
During a complete block zone the ESNO reading on RF page of the user interface will be 0db. During a partial
block zone ESNO readings will fluctuate within a range of 3-4degrees. There is no action to be taken by the
crew. C-Bird is designed to automatically detect a block zone and change satellite if another choice is
available.
A circle with a 3 meter radius must be drawn around the antenna in safety yellow, orange or red to demarcate
the safety zone. To avoid potential safety issues caused by the movement of the antenna and radiation this
safety zone should not be entered when the system is in operation.
