Lesson Content Description:
Students will create a super animal that has several physical attributes to help protect
them from predators and climate. Students will use prior knowledge to complete this
inquiry task.
Common Core Standard:
1-LS-1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants
and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation (DAY 1)


Review physical attributes that help animals survive as discussed in previous lessons
(armor, shells, claws, exoskeleton, spikes or spines, wings, frills, camouflage)
Introduce driving question: Can you create a shield for an animal that protects it and
helps it to survive?

THROUGH

Step-by-Step Presentation of the Objective (DAY 1)


Partner discussion about what they think will be important parts to have on their
super animal.
Review Materials and show their beginner animal

Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective (DAY 1)


Partner discussion about materials they may be able to use to protect their super
animals.
Class discussion about how materials may be used (ex. plates may create a shell,
markers can help camouflage animals, etc)
Using back of handouts, students can make rough ideas of what they want their super
animals to look like.
Teacher circulate to assist and CFU.
Students create blueprint of what their super animal will look like and write a list
of the materials they plan to use along with how it will help protect their animal.

BEYOND

Independent Practice (DAY 2)


Students gather materials and build their super animal based on their blueprints.
Teacher to circulate to assist as needed and CFU.
Partners share their super animals with class and what they decided to include on
their animals.
Pair-share what was easy and what was hard about creating their super animals.
